Short answer: Vastu colours for home follow direction: green and light blue in the north and east, white or cream in the north-east, orange and soft pink in the south-east, red or coral tones in the south, yellow and beige in the south-west, and white or grey in the west and north-west. Keep large areas light.
Every year, the weeks before Diwali are when Bengaluru repaints. Diwali falls on 8 November this year, so if the painter is coming in the next few weeks, this is the right moment to choose shades by direction instead of by the shade card alone. Paint is one of the few Vastu corrections that changes a room without touching a single wall.
Why direction decides the colour
In Vastu each direction carries an element. Water rules the north, wood the east, fire the south-east, earth the south-west, metal the west and air the north-west. A colour either supports the element of its zone or works against it. Green and blue feed the water and wood of the north and east. Red and orange belong with fire. Yellow and the browns of soil belong with earth. White and grey sit with metal and air. Once you know which way each wall faces, the choice becomes much narrower and much easier.
One thing the element chart cannot tell you is who lives behind each wall. Every direction is also ruled by a planet, and a planet that is strong or under strain in your chart changes how much that zone’s colour matters to you.
The colour chart by direction
| Direction | Element | Colours that suit | Colours to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | Water | Light green, sea blue, aqua | Red, deep orange |
| North-east | Water | White, cream, very light blue or yellow | Black, dark grey, red |
| East | Wood | Fresh green, light wood tones | Grey, white in large areas |
| South-east | Fire | Orange, peach, soft pink, light red | Blue, black |
| South | Fire | Coral, terracotta, warm red, pink | Blue, green in large areas |
| South-west | Earth | Yellow, beige, sand, light brown | Green, blue |
| West | Metal | White, silver grey, off-white | Red |
| North-west | Air | White, cream, light grey | Red, dark brown |
| Centre | Space | Off-white, pale yellow | Any dark colour |
Use the stronger shades on one wall or in accents, and keep the larger surfaces pale. A light version of the right colour always does better than a loud version of it.
Room by room
- Living room: if it sits in the north or east, light green or soft blue on the main wall, with off-white elsewhere. In the west, cream and pale grey with a warm accent.
- Master bedroom: usually in the south-west, so beige, light brown, peach or a muted yellow. Calm and earthy. I avoid bright red and dark blue behind the bed.
- Children’s room: light green or pale blue help a room used for study. Keep bright colours to cushions and posters, not walls.
- Kitchen: orange, peach or warm yellow suit a south-east kitchen. If the kitchen falls in the north-east, which is common in builder flats, choose light green or lemon to calm the fire instead of adding more red.
- Pooja corner: white, cream or very light yellow. Nothing dark.
- Guest room in the north-west: white, light grey or cream.
- Toilets: follow the zone. White or grey suits most toilets; a toilet in the north-east does better with light blue than with brown or red.
Facing changes which room lands in which zone. My guides for east-facing houses and west-facing houses show the usual room positions, and the element and planet of each direction, with the room that suits it, are in the 8-direction table of my Vastu Shastra for home room-by-room guide.
Common colour mistakes I see
- A dark feature wall, often charcoal or navy, placed in the north-east because it looks good in the catalogue.
- Red or maroon in the north, usually as a bold living room wall.
- Blue tiles or a blue backsplash in a south-east kitchen, which puts water straight into the fire zone.
- One grey shade across the whole flat. Grey is fine in the west, but it flattens the north and east.
- Dark wardrobes covering the entire north wall of a bedroom.
Rented home or no time to repaint before Diwali? Curtains, rugs, cushions and bedsheets carry colour too. A green runner in the north or yellow bedding in the south-west moves the room in the right direction without a painter. My Diwali Vastu tips cover the cleaning and lamp placement for the festival itself.
Choosing shades with your chart in hand
A colour session settles the obvious questions: which wall gets green, which gets cream, where to keep red away. Adding your birth chart tells me which zones deserve the most care in your case, so the painting budget goes to the walls that count first.
Take the south-east, ruled by Venus and the fire element. For someone in a Venus period, the shade and upkeep of that corner, often the kitchen, carries more weight than usual, so I would get it right before any bedroom accent wall. A home session at ₹1,499 is the simple place to begin before the painters arrive. When you want your chart beside the plan, I do that in an Astro-Vastu reading of chart and home.
Before you finalise the shade card
Colour is the last layer, not the first. If the plan has a kitchen in the north-east or a bedroom where it should not be, the right paint helps, but it works best as part of a full reading of the home. I go through the plan with you in a 45-minute session for ₹1,499 per flat or per floor, online or at my Begur studio, and I can mark the colour for each wall on your plan. The written report reaches you within 48 hours. Book before the painters start, or read about my Vastu consultation in Bangalore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which colour is best for the house exterior as per Vastu?
Light, warm shades such as cream, off-white, light yellow or beige suit most exteriors. You can add the colour of the facing direction as a band or on the gate: green for a north or east facing house, a warm terracotta for a south facing one. Avoid black or very dark exteriors.
What is the best Vastu colour for the bedroom?
For a master bedroom in the south-west, earthy tones work best: beige, light brown, peach or soft yellow. For a bedroom in the north-west or west, white or light grey suits. Keep the wall behind the bed calm and avoid bright red, black or dark blue there.
Is grey a good colour for the living room?
Light grey is fine if the living room is in the west or north-west, where it suits the metal and air elements. In a north or east living room, a whole room of grey feels flat. There I suggest light green or soft blue on the main wall, with grey kept to furniture.
Which colour should not be used in the north-east?
Avoid black, dark grey, deep brown and red in the north-east. This corner should be the lightest part of the home, so white, cream or a very pale yellow or blue is best. The same applies to tiles, curtains and large furniture placed in that corner.
Can I use dark colours anywhere in a Vastu home?
Yes, in small doses and in the right zones. Dark brown furniture suits the south-west, and a deep terracotta accent works in the south. Keep dark shades off the north-east and the centre, and avoid painting whole rooms dark in any direction.
