Vastu for Home: A Room-by-Room Guide With Simple Fixes

Vastu for home cover: wheel of the 16 Vastu zones

Short answer: Vastu for home comes down to a handful of rules. Keep the north-east light, open and clean. Keep the south-west heavy and solid, with the master bedroom there. Put the kitchen in the south-east, keep the centre open, and make sure the main door sits on a good pada of its wall. Most homes manage this with furniture, colour and small changes, without breaking a wall.

Below you will find a quick answer for every room, each linked to my detailed page on that room, plus how flats differ from independent houses and what I do about the most common problem I find in Bangalore apartments, a washroom in the north-east.

The five rules of Vastu for home that matter most

  1. North-east open. The water corner. Light, clean, uncluttered. Pooja, a window, an underground sump. Never a toilet, a stove or heavy storage.
  2. South-west heavy. The earth corner. The master bedroom, big wardrobes, the locker, the overhead tank.
  3. South-east for fire. The kitchen, the inverter, the electrical panel.
  4. Centre clear. The Brahmasthan should be walkable, with no toilet, staircase or pillar of storage. My Brahmasthan guide explains what to do if yours is blocked.
  5. The door on a good pada. Where the door sits along its wall matters more than which way the house faces.

When the first two are in decent shape, most homes already feel settled, and the rest is fine tuning.

How I read a home before suggesting anything

Every reading starts the same way. For an online session you send me three things: a compass reading taken at the entrance looking inwards, the full layout of the flat (or an accurate hand drawing), and the Google location. I find the centre of the plan, split it into the 16 Vastu zones and, on the call, we go through all 16 directions one by one. The written report with findings and remedies follows within 48 hours.

On site visits in Bangalore I also use an L-rod, a Y-rod and a compass. Clients abroad, in the US, Canada, Australia, Dubai or Singapore, get the call in their own time zone; my page for NRI clients covers that.

Vastu for home, room by room

Main entrance

The door should be the largest in the house, open inwards and sit on one of the good padas of its wall, away from the corners. Keep it lit after dark and keep shoes and dustbins away from it. The 32 padas and the threshold remedies are on my main door Vastu page, and the compound gate has its own rules in main gate Vastu.

Living room

North, east or north-east suits it best. Put the heavy sofa along the south or west wall so the open floor stays towards the north and east. TV position and seating are covered in living room Vastu.

Kitchen

South-east first, north-west second, with the person cooking facing east if the platform allows. A north-east kitchen is common in builder flats and can usually be eased without moving the stove. Stove, sink and fridge positions are on my kitchen Vastu page.

Bedroom

South-west for the earning couple, with the heavy wardrobe on the south or west wall and no mirror facing the bed. Children do well in the west or north-west. The room layout is in bedroom Vastu, and which way your head should point is answered in sleeping direction as per Vastu.

Pooja room

North-east, or the east wall close to it, facing east or west while you pray. Most flats have no spare north-east, so I wrote a separate guide on placing the pooja room in a flat, by facing.

Toilet and bathroom

North-west, west or south are the comfortable spots. The north-east, the south-west and the centre are the three I flag. For a toilet already in the wrong place, the no-construction steps are in toilet Vastu, and the north-east case is covered in its own section below.

Staircase

South, west or south-west, climbing clockwise, and never through the centre of the house. Duplex owners also ask about the space under the stairs; that is answered in staircase Vastu.

Water tank, sump and borewell

Underground water likes the north-east or north. The overhead tank likes the south-west, high and heavy. The details for houses and villas are in water tank Vastu, and independent houses should also check the septic tank position.

Colours

Greens and blues lean north and east, warm reds, oranges and yellows lean south and south-east, and whites, greys and creams suit the west. Earthy browns and beiges steady the south-west. The room-by-room shades are on my Vastu colours for home page.

Plants

Tulsi and small flowering plants in the north-east or east, heavier potted plants in the south and south-west. Avoid thorny plants indoors and remove dried ones quickly. Where each plant goes is in Vastu plants for home, and the most asked one has its own page: money plant direction.

The quick map: what goes where

This is the one-table version I share when someone asks for Vastu for home on a single screen. Treat it as a first check, not a final verdict.

Which facing is best? Read the door with it

No facing is bad by itself. North and east facing homes are the easiest to plan, and south and west facing homes work well when the door sits on the right pada. In Bangalore, check the label too: builders often sell south-east facing flats as east facing, and south-west facing flats as west facing. A compass at the door settles it. Pick your facing:

If you want the traditional match between your rashi and the facing, see house facing by rashi.

Vastu for a flat vs an independent house

The rules are the same. What you can act on is not.

In a flat, I never ask you to move a door or a toilet as a first step. In an independent house that is being built or renovated anyway, getting the zones right on paper costs far less than fixing them later. If it is a gated community home, see villa Vastu.

A washroom in the north-east: how I handle it

This is the dosha I find most often in Bangalore apartments. Many builders put a washroom in the north-east because the plumbing stack runs there, and it sits in the one corner that should be the cleanest in the house. It is a big dosha, and I treat it seriously, in three steps.

  1. Basic remedies first. Door kept shut, floor dry, leaks fixed quickly, nothing stored inside, light blue tones, and a bowl of sea salt changed every week.
  2. Then the kundli. I check the residents’ charts, mainly the second house, which in Jyotish relates to family, wealth and what the household holds on to.
  3. Then the decision. If the chart shows that the washroom is having a malefic effect, my advice is that it has to be removed, or at least taken out of use. If it does not, Astro-Vastu changes, combining the home corrections with chart-based remedies, can give relief without construction.

That second step is why I do not give a single blanket answer for this problem. The same north-east washroom can be a serious issue for one family and a manageable one for the next. The general toilet steps are on my toilet Vastu page.

Five changes that need no construction

  1. Empty the north-east corner of every room you can. Clutter there is the most common thing I find.
  2. Move the heaviest wardrobe or cupboard to the south-west or south wall.
  3. Clear the centre of the home of shoe piles, boxes and unused furniture.
  4. Keep toilet doors shut and the floor dry.
  5. Turn the work desk so you face north or east.

The fuller list, including what to do about a fixed kitchen or door, is in Vastu remedies without breaking walls.

Signs a home needs a Vastu check

None of these proves a Vastu problem on its own. When two or three show up together, I look at the plan.

  • Nobody sleeps well. I check the bed position and the master bedroom zone first.
  • Money comes in but does not stay. I look at the north, the locker and where water sits.
  • The same arguments keep returning. The south-west and the master bedroom usually need attention.
  • Someone is often unwell. I look at the north-east and the centre.
  • Plans keep getting stuck. I start with the main door and its pada.

Vastu is not a substitute for a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser. If someone at home is unwell, please see a doctor first. What I can do is make sure the home is not working against you.

Why one home needs different advice for different families

A Vastu reading tells you what each zone is doing. It does not tell you which zone matters most for you this year. Your birth chart does, through the period you are running. Astrology reads your time, Vastu reads your place, and Astro-Vastu reads both. Someone in a Saturn period, for example, tends to feel the west zone more, so clutter or a toilet there goes higher on their list. In an Astro-Vastu consultation I order your remedies around your chart. Clients often tell me they feel a positive shift in about 21 days and see clearer results within about 90. I share that as their experience, not as a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Is any house facing bad as per Vastu?

No facing is bad by itself. North and east facing homes are the easiest to plan, but south and west facing homes work well when the door sits on the right pada. I always read the facing and the door position together.

Which part of the house is most important in Vastu?

The north-east comes first for me, followed by the south-west. The first should stay light and open; the second should carry weight and the master bedroom.

Can Vastu be followed in a rented home?

Yes. Everything I suggest for rented homes can be undone when you move: furniture position, colours, desk direction, what sits in each corner. You do not need the landlord’s permission for any of it.

Is Vastu for home different for a flat and an independent house?

The principles are the same, but a flat is read from its own front door and is corrected mostly with furniture, colour and room use. An independent house also brings in the plot, the gate, the sump and the tank.

Will I have to demolish anything to correct Vastu at home?

Rarely. I start with furniture, colours, storage and how rooms are used. Structural changes come up only when someone is building or renovating anyway, or in serious cases such as a north-east washroom that the family’s chart shows is doing harm.

What should I send for an online Vastu check of my home?

A compass reading taken at the entrance looking inwards, the full layout or an accurate hand drawing, and the Google location. That is enough for me to map the 16 zones before the call.

Have your own home read

A general guide treats every east facing flat the same. Real homes are not like that: the plot shape, the exact door degree, a cut corner, a duct through the middle. A home session is ₹1,499 for one floor or one flat, 45 minutes online or in person in Bangalore, with a written report within 48 hours. Home visits in Bangalore are priced on a call or WhatsApp. Book a home Vastu session, read how a residential consultation works, or see the Vastu consultation in Bangalore page. Shops and offices need a different reading, covered under commercial Vastu.
