Short answer: Manglik dosha, also called Mangal or Kuja dosha, is the label for a chart with Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the Lagna and often from the Moon and Venus too. It is very common, often cancels, and on its own does not decide a marriage.
How a chart becomes Manglik
Mars stands for drive, courage and heat. When it sits in a house tied to the self, the home, the partner or shared life, the old texts asked for extra care in matching. The houses usually counted are the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, and many South Indian astrologers add the 2nd, where the dosha is often called Kuja or Chevvai dosham. Some count only from the Lagna. Others also count from the Moon and from Venus.
Now do the arithmetic. Six houses out of twelve is half the chart. Counted from three different starting points, a very large share of people turn out Manglik by one method or another. A label that common cannot decide anyone’s marriage on its own.
Mars has a direction too. Vastu gives it the south, so when a chart is Manglik I also ask what sits in the south of the home: a bedroom, a kitchen, a heavy wall, or a doorway that never stays closed.
When Manglik dosha cancels
The texts describe several conditions under which the dosha is treated as cancelled or much weaker. The ones I go through first:
- Both partners are Manglik. This is the most widely accepted cancellation.
- Mars is in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn.
- Mars is joined or aspected by Jupiter, or Jupiter is strong in an angle.
- The partner’s chart has Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same sensitive houses, which many traditions count as a balance.
- Specific sign-and-house exceptions listed in the classical rules, which I check one by one against your chart.
You will also hear that the dosha fades after the age of 28. The belief is widespread. I do not lean on it, because the chart itself gives a better answer than a birthday.
Matching two Manglik charts
When both charts are Manglik, most astrologers consider the matter settled. I still look at where Mars sits in each one, because Mars in the 7th says something different from Mars in the 12th. One may point to a strong-willed partner, another to expenses or living apart for work. Knowing this helps a couple understand each other. It is not a reason to call off a match.

What I do not do
I do not tell anyone their marriage will fail because of Mars. I do not sell pujas, yantras or gemstones, and I will not call a ritual compulsory before a wedding. If your family wants to perform kumbh vivah or any ceremony for its own peace of mind, that is a decision for you and your priest. My part is to read the chart and tell you plainly what it shows.

Mars in the chart, Mars in the south of the home
A Manglik reading tells you how Mars sits in your kundli and whether it cancels. It says nothing about the room where the couple will actually sleep, argue and make up. Looking at the chart and the floor plan side by side shows whether the house is quietly feeding the heat of Mars or giving it a healthy outlet.

Look at the house Mars occupies in your birth chart, counted from the Lagna, and if you like from the Moon and Venus as well. Different apps use different rules, which is why the same person can be shown as Manglik on one and not on another. A reading of the chart settles it.
Is Manglik dosha the same for men and women?
Yes. The classical rules apply to both charts in the same way. Social pressure has often fallen more heavily on women, which is unfair and has no basis in the rules themselves. I read the groom’s Mars as carefully as the bride’s.
What is anshik or low Manglik?
The term is used when Mars meets the condition only from the Moon or Venus, or sits in a placement treated as mild, or when a partial cancellation applies. It is not a formal classical category, so I prefer to describe exactly where Mars is and what that means.
Does Manglik dosha delay marriage?
It can be one of several factors, but delay in a chart usually comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the dasha sequence as a whole. Blaming Mars alone often misses the real reason. Reading the full chart shows which periods are more supportive for marriage.
