Which Facing House Is Good for Your Rashi?

Illustration: Which Facing House Is Good for Your Rashi?

Short answer: A south facing house is traditionally good for Mesha and Vrishchika, the two rashis ruled by Mars, and also sits well with Simha, Dhanu and Meena. Makara and Kumbha need more care. Treat this as a first filter only: your lagna, the 4th house and your running dasha decide more, and any facing can be made to work.

Almost every week someone sends me a message that starts the same way: “We have shortlisted two flats, one faces south and one faces west. Which is better for my rashi?” It is a fair question, and there is a traditional answer to it. There is also a more useful answer, which comes from your full chart. This page gives you both, in that order.

Each facing, and the rashis it traditionally suits

Here is the quick answer for all eight facings. “Suits” means the facing belongs to your rashi lord or to one of its natural friends. “Needs care” means it belongs to a planet your rashi lord treats as an enemy. Neither word means good or bad on its own.

  • South facing: Mesha and Vrishchika first, then Simha, Dhanu and Meena. Needs care for Makara and Kumbha.
  • West facing: Makara and Kumbha first, then Vrishabha and Tula. Needs care for Simha.
  • North facing: Mithuna and Kanya first, then Vrishabha, Tula, Karka, Makara and Kumbha. Needs care for Mesha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena.
  • East facing: Simha first, then Mesha, Vrishchika, Karka, Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanu and Meena. Needs care for Vrishabha, Tula, Makara and Kumbha.
  • North-east facing: Dhanu and Meena first, then Simha, Mesha and Vrishchika. No rashi lord treats Jupiter as an enemy.
  • South-east facing: Vrishabha and Tula first, then Mithuna, Kanya, Makara and Kumbha. Needs care for Simha, Dhanu and Meena.
  • North-west facing: Karka first, then Simha, Mesha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena. Needs care for Vrishabha, Tula, Mithuna, Kanya, Makara and Kumbha.
  • South-west facing: Makara and Kumbha first, then Vrishabha and Tula. Needs care for Simha.

How the table works

Vastu gives each direction to a planet: the Sun has the east, the Moon the north-west, Mars the south, Mercury the north, Jupiter the north-east, Venus the south-east, Saturn the west and Rahu the south-west. Every rashi has a ruling planet. So the first step is simple: a house facing your rashi lord’s own direction is the traditional first choice.

The second step uses the natural friendships between planets from classical Jyotish. Mars, for example, counts the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter as friends and Mercury as an enemy, so for a Mars rashi the east, north-west and north-east also sit well, while the north asks for more attention. For the south-west I follow the old rule that Rahu behaves like Saturn, so that facing follows Saturn’s friendships.

Moon sign or lagna: which one should you use?

When people say “my rashi” in India, they usually mean the Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in when you were born. That is what newspaper rashifal and name-letter charts use, and it is what the table above is built on. If you only know your rashi from the first letter of your name, this rashi-by-name guide gives you a starting point, but your birth details give the real one.

The lagna, or ascendant, is the sign rising in the east at the moment of your birth. It changes roughly every two hours, so two people born on the same day can share a Moon sign and have very different lagnas. For questions about the body, the home and how life actually unfolds, I give the lagna more weight. The Moon tells me how you will feel living in a place. The lagna tells me how the place will treat you.

If your Moon sign and lagna point to different facings, do not panic. That happens in most charts, and it is exactly where a proper reading starts.

Why the rashi is only a first filter

The table is a tradition, not a rule, and I would never ask anyone to reject a good flat because of it. No facing is bad. In practice three things in your chart tell me far more than the Moon sign:

  • The 4th house and its lord. This is the house of home, land and peace of mind. Where its lord sits, and how strong it is, says more about your fit with a property than any facing.
  • The lagna and its lord. As above, it shows how a place supports you day to day.
  • The running dasha. The planet whose period you are in right now colours the next several years. A facing that belongs to that planet, or to its friend, often feels easier during that time.

After that, the house itself matters more than its facing. Where the entrance sits on the wall, what lies in the north-east, and where the kitchen and master bedroom fall decide most of what you will live with. Those are layout questions, and I have kept them off this page. For the door and layout rules, see my guides to the south facing house, the west facing house, the north facing home and the east facing home, and for the corner plots, north-east, south-east, south-west and north-west.

And if your flat faces a direction marked “needs care” for your rashi, it can still be made to work. In my practice every correction starts with placement, colour and use of rooms. For a facing question, I start with placement, colour and use of rooms long before any building work.

Choosing between flats of different facings: what Astro-Vastu adds

In Bengaluru the choice is rarely about facing alone. You are comparing a west facing flat on a higher floor with a south facing one closer to work, both inside your budget. A rashi table cannot settle that. What settles it is reading your chart and each floor plan side by side.

That is what my Astro-Vastu consultation does. I look at your lagna, your 4th house and the dasha you will be living through after you move in. Then I map each shortlisted plan into the 16 zones and check which zones your chart leans on right now. The result is a plain comparison: which flat fits you better, what each one would need, and whether any of it involves more than moving furniture. If a spouse or parent will live there too, I read their chart with yours.

Astrology studies time and Vastu studies space, and every life depends on both. When someone wears a gemstone or has done Vastu and still feels stuck, I read the two together: if strengthening a planet in the chart also strengthens its aspect on a house that troubles them, I calm that through the home; and when the chart has no remedy for something they need, I find it in the house, and the other way round.

If you would rather start smaller, book a 45-minute home Vastu session or an astrology call for one kundli at ₹1,499, online or at my Begur studio, and ask your facing question there. Your written notes reach you within 48 hours. You can book a consultation here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a south facing house bad for Makara or Kumbha rashi?

No. Saturn, the lord of Makara and Kumbha, treats Mars as an enemy, so tradition asks for more attention in a south facing home. That is a caution, not a verdict. If the 4th house in your chart is strong, or you are running a Mars or Jupiter period, a well-planned south facing flat can suit you well.

Which facing house is good for all rashis?

None suits every rashi. In the traditional table, east sits well with the most signs, and north-east is the one facing no rashi needs to be careful with, which is partly why both are popular. But plenty of people do well in west and south facing homes. The layout and your own chart decide more than the compass direction of the entrance.

Whose rashi counts when family members have different signs?

Traditionally the head of the household, or the person whose name is on the property, is checked first. In practice I look at the earning members and anyone who spends most of the day at home. When their charts point different ways, the zones of the flat are used to support each person, so one facing can still work for everyone.

I don’t know my rashi. How can I find it?

Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, worked out from your date, time and place of birth. Many families also use the first letter of the name given at the naming ceremony. If you share your birth details on a call, I will tell you both your rashi and your lagna.

Does this apply to a rented flat?

Yes, the same reading applies, and it is useful before you sign the lease. With a rental you will not change much structurally anyway, so I focus on which rooms to use for sleeping and work, and on small placement changes the owner will not mind.
