Numerology: How I Read Your Numbers, and Where to Start

Short answer: Numerology reads meaning in numbers. In the Indian system I follow, each digit from 1 to 9 belongs to one of the nine planets. Your three core numbers are the birth number (day of birth), the destiny number (full date of birth) and the name number (Chaldean letter values). I always read them with your kundli.

Nine numbers, nine planets

The Indian numerology I practise rests on one idea: every digit from 1 to 9 belongs to one of the nine planets of Jyotish. 1 is the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. Bigger numbers are added down until one of these nine is left.

Because of that, a number is never just a number for me. It is a planet, with that planet’s friends, enemies and moods. I have written fuller pages on number 1 and the Sun, number 7 and Ketu and number 8 and Saturn, the three people ask me about most.

The three numbers I start with

  • Birth number (moolank): the day you were born, reduced to one digit. Your nature and your main lucky number; see lucky number by date of birth.
  • Destiny number (bhagyank): your full date of birth, reduced. The direction life keeps nudging you in; see life path number.
  • Name number: the letters of the name you use, added with Chaldean values. The only one of the three you can adjust; see name numerology.

Since every number stands for a planet, it also stands for a direction. The Sun’s 1 sits with the east of a house, Saturn’s 8 with the west and Jupiter’s 3 with the north-east. Numbers and directions are two ways of describing the same nine planets.

The numbers around you

How my method differs from a number chart online

Most online charts stop at the number. I go three steps further. First, I use the Chaldean letter values for names, the system most Indian numerologists follow, and I reduce every total to a single digit from 1 to 9, without keeping 11 or 22 as master numbers. Second, I judge whether two numbers get on by the natural friendship of their planets, as Jyotish does, rather than by a fixed list.

Third, and most important, I read the numbers next to your birth chart and the period you are running. If your numbers say one thing and your kundli says another, the kundli wins, because it carries timing. My kundli analysis page explains what I look for in the chart itself.

A five-minute self-check

You can do the first layer by hand with a pen and a calendar:

  1. Reduce the day you were born to one digit. That is your birth number.
  2. Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce. That is your destiny number.
  3. Add the Chaldean values of the name you use every day and reduce. That is your name number.
  4. Write the planet next to each of the three numbers.
  5. If the name number is friendly or neutral with at least one of the other two, leave it. If it clashes with both, the name is the easiest of the three to adjust.

What numerology can and cannot tell you

Numbers describe tendencies. They help you choose between a few good options: a date, a spelling, a SIM. They do not predict events, and I will not use them to frighten anyone about a 4 or an 8. Timing comes from the dasha and the transits in your chart, which is why I treat numerology as a supporting layer.

I am an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus and spent more than 15 years at IBM, Philips and Mercedes-Benz R&D before this practice, so I like a method I can show on paper. If you are in Bengaluru and prefer to sit across the table, you can also meet me as an astrologer in Bangalore at the studio.

Numbers, chart and home: three readings of the same planets

Numerology gives me the planets you carry in your dates and your name. The kundli shows how strong each of those planets is and when it becomes active. The Vastu grid shows where the same planets sit in your home. One layer alone can mislead; three that agree are hard to ignore, and three that disagree tell me where to start.

Say your birth and destiny numbers are both 8, Saturn’s number, and your chart shows Saturn mahadasha beginning. I would look at the west of your home and the direction you face at your desk before saying anything about lucky dates. Start with the ₹1,499 astrology call for your numbers and chart; the Astro-Vastu consultation adds the home to the same reading.

To have your numbers read with your kundli, book a 45-minute call for ₹1,499, online from anywhere or at my Begur studio, with written notes within 48 hours. Book a consultation, or read how my online astrology consultation is run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which numerology system is used in India?

Most Indian numerologists use the Chaldean letter values for names and link each number from 1 to 9 to one of the nine Vedic planets. That is the system I follow. Western Pythagorean numerology uses a different letter chart and keeps master numbers like 11 and 22.

Is numerology part of Vedic astrology?

Not strictly. Numerology is a separate tradition, but the Indian form borrows the nine planets of Jyotish. That shared base is why I can read your numbers and your kundli side by side without the two contradicting each other.

Which is the most important number in numerology?

For daily nature, the birth number. For the longer direction of life, the destiny number. The name number matters because it is the only one you can adjust. I look at all three together rather than ranking one above the others.

Can numerology predict the future?

It shows tendencies and helps you choose between options, such as a date or a spelling. It does not predict events. For timing I rely on the dasha periods and transits in your birth chart, and use numbers as a supporting layer.

Do I need my birth time for numerology?

No. Numerology uses only your date of birth and your name. The birth time matters when I read your kundli alongside, because it fixes the Lagna and the houses. If you want both read together, bring the exact time if you have it.
