North-Facing House Vastu: Main Door, Layout and Remedies

North-facing house Vastu illustration: floor plan with main door and road on the north side

Short answer: in north facing house Vastu, this facing is one of the best. Put the main door on the middle padas of the north wall, Mukhya, Bhallata or Soma (N3 to N5). Keep the north and north-east open and light. Place the kitchen in the south-east and the master bedroom in the south-west.

North is Kubera’s side and Mercury’s direction, so it is tied to money, work and fresh openings. In my experience the facing itself is seldom the issue in these homes. The door pada and a cluttered north-east usually are.

Why a north facing house works well

Vastu wants the north and east of a plot to be lower, lighter and more open than the south and west. On a north facing plot the road is on the north, so the open setback, the gate and the front garden all fall on the right side without any effort. That is a head start very few other facings get.

The trouble starts when owners undo this advantage. A car parked across the north-east, a shoe cabinet built into the entrance wall, a store room cut into the front corner. Each one closes the side that should breathe.

North wall door padas: which are good and which to avoid

The traditional scheme gives each side of the house eight padas. On the north side you count from the north-west corner towards the north-east corner. Measure the whole north side of the house or the flat, divide it into eight equal parts, and see where the door opening falls.

PadaNameWhere it sitsMy reading
N1RogaAt the north-west cornerAvoid. Traditionally tied to illness and ill will.
N2NagaNext to that cornerAvoid. Linked with jealousy and friction with neighbours or relatives.
N3MukhyaA quarter of the way inBest. Linked with wealth and success in business.
N4BhallataJust short of the middleBest. Linked with plenty and a steady stream of opportunities.
N5SomaJust past the middleBest. Soma is Kubera’s pada, linked with money that stays and peace at home.
N6BhujagaThree quarters alongAvoid. Linked with quarrels in the family, often involving children.
N7AditiNear the north-east endUse with care. Schools differ on it; I read it together with the owner’s chart.
N8DitiAt the north-east cornerUse with care. Some teachers accept it, others do not; I would not choose it for a new house.

You may have heard “keep the north door towards the north-east”. The pada scheme is more careful than that. The strongest three padas sit in the centre of the wall, and the stretch hugging the north-east corner is mixed at best. So for a new plan, I aim the door at the middle of the north wall. The full 32-pada list for all four sides is on my main door Vastu guide.

How do you know a house is truly north facing?

Stand a step inside the main door, away from the steel frame and the switchboard, and take a compass reading looking out. A reading within about 10 degrees either side of 0 (so 350 to 10) is a clean north. Around 20 to 30 degrees the door leans north-north-east, and around 330 to 340 it leans north-north-west. The padas still apply in both cases, but they shift along the wall, so I work from the exact degree on your plan.

For an online session I ask for the reading taken at the entrance looking inwards. For a north door that comes to roughly 170 to 190 degrees. In a flat, the facing is your own front door, not the tower or the balcony. If the reading lands near 45 degrees, the home is north-east facing, and if it is near 315, read the north-west facing guide instead.

Room plan for a north facing plot

Walk in through a north door and the plan almost draws itself. The front is your open, light side; the back carries the weight.

  • Just inside, towards the north-east: a small pooja unit or meditation corner, with nothing tall around it. If you have no spare corner, my guide to the pooja room in a flat covers the alternatives.
  • Front, north side: the living room or a work desk facing north. Cash and important papers in a north-side drawer also suit this side.
  • Front, north-west: the guest room or the shoe rack, kept closed and tidy.
  • Centre: open and walkable. A light dining area is fine; a toilet or a staircase is not.
  • Back right, south-east: the kitchen, cooking facing east.
  • Back left, south-west: the master bedroom with the heaviest wardrobes on the south and west walls.
  • West and south: children’s room, store and staircase.

Five things that spoil a north facing home

  1. The door on Roga, Naga or Bhujaga, often because the builder lined it up with the lift.
  2. A kitchen or a washroom in the north-east. Builder flats in Bangalore often put a washroom there, and I treat it as a major dosha.
  3. The north side built taller or heavier than the south, for example a first-floor room only on the north.
  4. A wall of wardrobes along the north side of the living room.
  5. Clutter on the north balcony: old furniture, boxes, unused coolers.

Remedies when the door sits on a weak pada

In a flat you cannot move the door, and I never ask you to. For a north entrance I use an aluminium strip at the threshold, a green or blue doormat and a bright light above the door that stays on through the evening. Keep the first few feet inside open. Then move weight to the back: cupboards to the south and west walls, the north-east cleared and given a plant or a bowl of water.

If the kitchen has ended up in the north-east, green marble or a green mat below the burner and removing red items from that corner give some relief. A north-east washroom needs more thought, and I look at the family’s chart before deciding how far the correction must go. More fixes of this kind are in Vastu remedies without breaking walls.

North facing homes and your kundli

North is Mercury’s direction, so how a north door treats you depends partly on Mercury in your chart and on the period you are running. By the traditional rashi rule, a north facing home suits Mithuna and Kanya first. I treat that as a first filter only; the 4th house and the dasha decide more. My house facing by rashi page sets out all twelve rashis.

When the chart and the plan are read together in an Astro-Vastu session, I can tell you which of the corrections to do this month and which can wait. Clients often report a positive shift in about 21 days and clearer results within about 90, though I cannot promise that for any home.

Frequently asked questions

Which north wall pada is Kubera’s?

Soma, the fifth pada counted from the north-west corner, just past the centre of the wall. Soma is the pada most people mean when they speak of a “Kubera door”.

Is a main door right at the north-east corner of a north facing house good?

Not as a first choice. The corner padas, Aditi and Diti, are read differently by different schools. I prefer the three central padas and keep the north-east corner itself open and light.

Can a north facing flat have the kitchen near the entrance?

Only if that part of the flat is the north-west. A kitchen in the north or the north-east near the door is common in builder flats and needs correction with colour and stove placement.

Is a north facing house good for Mithuna and Kanya rashi?

By tradition, yes, because Mercury rules both rashis and also rules the north. Your lagna and the running dasha still carry more weight than the rashi alone.

What should I keep on the north side of my home?

Light things. A desk, a low bookshelf, plants and an open window. Keep heavy cupboards, lofts and junk away from the north wall.

Get your north facing home checked

The same north facing plan can need different advice for two families, because the door degree, the plot shape and the people living there all differ. For a session, send me the compass reading taken at the entrance looking inwards, the full layout and the Google location. We go through all 16 directions on a 45-minute call, online or in person in Bangalore, and your written report with remedies follows within 48 hours. It costs ₹1,499 for one floor or one flat. Book a Vastu call, or see how sessions work for clients living abroad.
