Short answer: Vedic astrology reads career from the 10th house and its lord, the 6th house for jobs and service, the 2nd and 11th for income and gains, and the Dashamsa (D10) chart. Timing for a job change or a new direction comes from your dasha periods and the transits of Saturn and Jupiter. A chart shows tendencies and supportive windows, not a set job title or salary.
What a Birth Chart Can Tell You About Work
People usually come to me with one of three questions. Which field suits me? Is this a good time to change jobs? Should I start a business or stay employed?
A chart can speak to all three, as tendencies. It shows the kind of work that comes naturally to you, the periods when change is better supported, and the patterns that keep repeating in your working life. It cannot replace your skills, your effort or a sensible look at the job market.
Before I practised astrology full time, I spent 15+ years at IBM, Philips and Mercedes-Benz R&D after IIM Ahmedabad, so I tend to read career questions practically and tie them back to real decisions.
The 10th House and Its Lord
The 10th house is the house of career, status, reputation and public life. It is the first place I look.
- The sign on the 10th: gives a flavour of how you work and what kind of role suits you.
- Planets in the 10th: the Sun there often points to authority or government links, Mercury to communication and analysis, Saturn to slow, steady rise through hard work, and Jupiter to teaching, advising or finance.
- The 10th lord: its house, sign and strength show where your career finds its outlet. A 10th lord in the 7th, for example, often connects work with partnerships, clients or trade.
The 6th, 2nd and 11th Houses
Career is not only the 10th house.
The 6th house covers daily work, service, employment, competition and colleagues. A strong 6th house often suits steady employment and roles where you solve problems for others.
The 2nd house shows earned income and savings. The 11th house shows gains, networks and fulfilment of ambitions. When the 10th, 2nd and 11th lords are well connected, work tends to translate into money more easily.
The Planets That Matter Most
- Saturn is the main significator of work, discipline and long-term effort. Its placement often shows where you will have to work hardest, and where results come late but last.
- The Sun relates to authority, leadership, government and recognition. A strong Sun supports senior and visible roles.
- Mercury rules intellect, communication, trade, writing, analysis and technology. It is important for many modern careers.
- Jupiter relates to knowledge, guidance, finance, law and teaching. It also protects and expands whatever it touches.
Mars (engineering, operations, defence, sport), Venus (design, arts, hospitality, luxury) and Rahu (technology, foreign links, unconventional fields) also play a part depending on the chart.
The Dashamsa (D10) Chart
The Dashamsa is the tenth divisional chart, used specifically for career. I check its lagna, its 10th house and 10th lord, and how the main career planets from the birth chart are placed in it. A planet that is strong in the D10 often becomes a real asset in your working life, even if it looked ordinary in the main chart.
Like the Navamsa, the D10 is sensitive to birth time, so an accurate time matters.
Job Change Timing: Dashas and Transits
Dashas set the broad chapter. A period of the 10th lord, a planet placed in the 10th, or the lords of the 6th or 11th often brings movement at work: a new role, promotion, change of employer or change of field. The 12th house can be active when a move involves relocation or going abroad.
Transits trigger events within that chapter. Saturn’s transit over or aspecting the 10th house or 10th lord often brings added responsibility, pressure or restructuring. Jupiter’s transit over the same points tends to bring opportunity and support. When a career-related dasha meets these transits, change becomes more likely.
I look for several factors pointing the same way before calling any period a good one for change.
Business or Job? Tendencies, Not Rules
Some combinations lean one way or the other, but none of them decide it on their own:
- A strong 7th house and 7th lord (partnerships, clients, trade) linked to the 10th often suits business or independent work.
- A strong 6th house linked to the 10th often suits employment and service roles.
- A well-placed Mercury and 11th lord can support trading and commerce.
- A strong 3rd house (initiative, courage) helps when starting something on your own.
Risk appetite, savings, family responsibilities and your actual business idea matter just as much. I always say this plainly in a session.
Your Workspace Can Support the Work
Astrology describes the timing. Your working space is something you can change today. A few simple Vastu points help:
- Sit facing north or east while you work.
- If you own the business, place your own seat in the south-west of the office, with a solid wall behind you.
- Keep the north and east of the room light and uncluttered.
- Keep the desk clear of piles of old papers and broken items.

A Practical Checklist for Your Career Reading
- Confirm your exact birth time and place.
- Note your 10th house sign, planets in it and the 10th lord’s placement.
- Check the 6th, 2nd and 11th lords and how they connect to the 10th.
- Look at Saturn, Sun, Mercury and Jupiter and how strong each one is.
- Find your current dasha and sub-period, and the next one.
- Note where Saturn and Jupiter are transiting relative to your 10th house.
- Write down the decision you are actually facing, so the reading stays useful.
From my consultations: The pattern I see most often is someone wanting to quit during a demanding Saturn period, when the chart suggests building skills now and moving once a more supportive dasha begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which house shows career in Vedic astrology?
The 10th house is the main house of career and reputation. The 6th (jobs and service), 2nd (income) and 11th (gains) are read with it, along with the Dashamsa (D10) chart.
Can astrology tell me which career is best for me?
It can show the kinds of work that suit your temperament and strengths, such as analytical, creative, people-facing or leadership roles. The final choice should also weigh your skills, interests and real opportunities.
When is a good time to change jobs according to astrology?
Change is more strongly supported in a dasha connected to the 10th, 6th or 11th house, especially when Jupiter or Saturn is transiting your 10th house or its lord. Several factors should agree before you act.
Does my chart show whether I should do business or a job?
It shows tendencies. A strong 7th and 3rd house linked to the 10th often favours business, while a strong 6th favours employment. Your finances, risk appetite and plan matter just as much.
Can Vastu help my career?
Vastu can support the space you work in. Sitting facing north or east and keeping the owner’s seat in the south-west are simple steps. It works best alongside effort, skills and good timing.
