Short answer: In Vastu for bedroom placement, the master bedroom belongs in the south-west, the steadiest zone of the home. Children’s rooms suit the west, or the east for older students. A guest room fits the north-west. Avoid a bedroom in the north-east or the centre, and keep the couple’s room out of the south-east.
Rooms first, then the bed
Bedroom Vastu has two layers. The first is which part of the house the room sits in. The second is how the bed is placed inside it. This page deals with the first. For the head direction of the bed, read my page on sleeping direction, which goes through it by age.
I start with zones because they are the bigger decision. A bed can be turned in ten minutes; deciding which room becomes the master is much harder to undo. When a family moves into a new flat, I want this settled before the wardrobes are ordered.
The zone rule is the same for everyone, but people are not. Two brothers can share a room that suits one of them far better than the other, and the reason often lies in their charts rather than in the room.
Which bedroom goes where
| Who sleeps there | Best zone | Second choice | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Couple, head of the family | South-west | South or west | North-east, south-east, centre |
| Elders | South-west or south | West | North-east |
| Young children | West | North-west or east | South-west |
| Teenagers and students | East or west | North | South-east |
| Guests | North-west | West | South-west |
The master bedroom in the south-west
The south-west is earth, the heaviest and most settled element, and the head of the family belongs there. In a two-storey house, the master bedroom goes in the south-west of the upper floor, which keeps the weight of the building on the side Vastu wants it. Inside the room, the wardrobes go on the south and west walls, the bed sits in the south-west part of the room, and the north-east of the room stays open.
If the south-west is already taken by a kitchen or a toilet, the south or the west is the next best. What I avoid is putting the couple in the south-east. Fire in that corner is good for cooking and less good for two people trying to settle a disagreement. Where the south-west falls depends on your plan: it is usually at the back of an east-facing house and often at the front of a west-facing one.
Children’s rooms
Young children do well in the west or the north-west, where the room is lively but does not carry the authority of the house. As they reach exam years, I prefer the east, with its morning light, and a desk facing east or north. The study corner itself is covered on the study room Vastu page. I do not give a child the south-west room: it holds the head of the home, and the parents should keep it.
Guest rooms
The north-west is the air zone, linked with movement and change. It suits people who come and go, and a guest room there keeps visits pleasant and short. It also works for a grown child who is about to move out for work or marriage.
Bedrooms in difficult zones
- North-east: use it as a study, a pooja room or a sitting room if you can. If someone must sleep there, keep the room light, skip heavy furniture and give it to a younger member of the family rather than the couple.
- Centre: a bedroom on the Brahmasthan is rare in flats but happens in some villas. Keep the middle of the room open and the bed towards its south-west.
- South-east: acceptable for a single adult who likes an active room; not for a couple, and not my first choice for a student.
Inside any bedroom: a short checklist
- Bed in the south-west part of the room, not pushed against the north or east wall.
- Wardrobes and heavy storage on the south or west wall.
- Attached toilet in the north-west or west of the room, not in its south-west.
- No mirror facing the bed; my mirror Vastu page has the placements, and the dressing table notes show where the vanity fits.
- TV and work desk outside the bedroom if possible; if not, on the south-east wall.
- Soft, warm colours on the walls rather than dark or loud ones; which shade suits which direction is in my Vastu colours guide.
My home Vastu guide shows how the bedrooms sit with the kitchen, the pooja room and the living area, so you can see the whole plan at once.
Whose chart should decide the master bedroom
Standard bedroom Vastu gives the south-west to the couple and stops there. The chart lets me go a step further. The 7th house shows the marriage and Venus shows comfort and closeness, so when either is under strain in one partner’s chart, I look harder at the south-west room: what sits in it, what sits above it, and whether the bed is in the right part of it.
One example: when one partner is running Rahu’s period, the south-west, which Rahu is linked with, deserves more care than usual. Placing every bedroom is part of my ₹1,499 home Vastu call. For a family that wants each room matched to the person sleeping in it, my Astro-Vastu consultation for the whole family reads the charts and the plan together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the master bedroom be in the north-west?
It is a workable second-tier choice, but not the one I would pick for the head of the family. The north-west is linked with movement, so it can feel unsettled for long-term use. If you have no option, keep heavy wardrobes on the south-west wall of that room.
Can a married couple use the north-east bedroom?
I prefer not to, because the north-east suits study, prayer and light use. If it is the only room, keep it uncluttered, choose a light wooden bed without heavy storage, and leave the north-east corner of the room completely open.
In a duplex, should the master bedroom be upstairs or downstairs?
Upstairs, in the south-west, when the family is able to climb comfortably. For elderly parents who find stairs hard, a ground floor bedroom in the south-west or south is the sensible choice, and Vastu has no objection to it.
Is a bedroom above a garage or an empty space acceptable?
It is common in villas and acceptable, though not ideal for the master bedroom. Keep the floor of that room well furnished on its south and west side and avoid leaving the room underused. A solid bed with a firm base helps it feel settled.
Can I keep a pooja unit in the bedroom?
In small flats it is sometimes the only option. Place it on the north-east or east wall, keep it closed with doors at night, and make sure your feet do not point towards it while you sleep.
