East-Facing House Vastu: Main Door, Layout and Remedies

East-facing house Vastu illustration: floor plan with main door and road on the east side

Short answer: east facing house Vastu is good news for most families. An east facing house is one of the strongest facings in Vastu, provided the main door sits on a good pada of the east wall. Jayanta and Indra (E3 and E4) are the best, with Surya and Satya (E5 and E6) next. Keep the kitchen in the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west and the east side open to the morning sun.

One check comes before all of this. In Bangalore I often find that a flat sold as east facing actually faces south-east, and the advice for that home is quite different. I explain the two-minute check further down.

Is an east facing house good as per Vastu?

Yes. East belongs to the Sun. In Vastu it is tied to health, a good name and help from seniors, bosses and government offices. There is a plain practical side too: morning light enters from the front, so the rooms you use first thing in the day stay bright and dry.

When an east facing home goes wrong, it is rarely the facing. It is almost always the door drifting towards the south-east end of the wall, because that is where the road, the gate or the lift lobby happens to be. The pada table below shows why that matters.

East wall door padas: the 8 positions, good and bad

Traditional Vastu splits the boundary of a house into 32 padas, eight on each side, each with its own presiding deity. On the east side you count from the north-east corner towards the south-east corner. Measure the full east side of the house or flat, corner to corner, and divide it into eight equal parts. Then see which part your door opening falls in. If the opening covers two padas, I read both.

PadaNameWhere it sitsMy reading
E1ShikhiAt the north-east cornerAvoid. Traditionally linked with fire risk, accidents and sudden losses.
E2ParjanyaNext to the cornerAvoid. Linked with expenses that keep rising and effort that pays back little.
E3JayantaQuarter of the way alongBest. Linked with winning, steady income and things moving in your favour.
E4Indra (Mahendra)Just before the middleBest. Linked with standing in society and support from people in authority.
E5SuryaJust past the middleGood. Recognition and visibility. Some teachers warn it can sharpen tempers, so I keep the entrance calm and bright.
E6SatyaThree quarters alongGood, with care. A good name and fair dealing. A few modern schools rate it lower, so I check it against the owner’s chart.
E7BhrishaNear the south-east endAvoid. Linked with harsh words and arguments at home.
E8AntarikshaAt the south-east cornerAvoid. Linked with theft and money slipping away.

In plain words: the middle half of the east wall is where you want the door, and the stretch just on the north-east side of the centre is the sweet spot. The two padas at each end are the ones I steer people away from. I use this same 32-pada scheme for every side of the house, and the full list sits on my main door Vastu page.

Is your flat really east facing?

This is the question I ask first, because in Bangalore apartments the label is often wrong. Builders sell a lot of flats as “east facing” when the door actually looks out to the south-east. East facing flats are easier to sell, so the brochure rounds the direction off. A south-east home needs different door and kitchen advice, so the label is not a small detail.

Here is how to check it yourself:

  1. Open a compass app on your phone and calibrate it.
  2. Stand a step inside the main door, away from the steel frame, the switchboard and the electricity meter. Metal pulls the needle.
  3. Take three readings a little apart and use the average.

Looking out of the door, a reading between roughly 80 and 100 degrees is a true east. From about 100 to 125 the door is leaning towards east-south-east, and from about 125 to 145 the home is really south-east facing. When you send me a reading for a consultation, I ask for it standing at the entrance looking inwards. For a true east door that reading comes to around 260 to 280 degrees, and I do the conversion at my end.

In an apartment I go by your own flat’s main door. The building gate, the tower’s front and the balcony do not decide the facing of your home.

Room layout for an east facing home

Think of an east facing plot in three bands: the front (east), the middle and the back (west). This is how the rooms usually settle.

Part of the houseWhat I put there
Front, north-east cornerPooja unit or a quiet sitting corner. Low furniture only. The underground sump can go on this side of the plot.
Front, middleThe entrance and living room, with the widest windows of the house.
Front, south-east cornerKitchen, with the cook facing east. The meter and inverter also suit this corner.
MiddleKeep the centre open: a passage or a light sitting area. No toilet, staircase or pillar-heavy storage in the Brahmasthan.
Back, south-westMaster bedroom, heavy wardrobes, locker and the overhead tank on the terrace above.
Back, westChildren’s room, dining table or the staircase in a duplex.
Back, north-westGuest room, a toilet, the utility area. Also the second choice for the kitchen.

For the bed and wardrobe positions inside that south-west room, my bedroom Vastu guide goes room by room, and the stove and sink rules are on the kitchen page.

What spoils an east facing house

  • A door on Bhrisha or Antariksha, at the south-east end of the wall.
  • A high compound wall, a tall water tank or dense trees cutting off the morning light.
  • Heavy storage, a loft or an overhead tank on the east side.
  • A washroom in the north-east corner. Many Bangalore apartments have exactly this, and it is a big dosha.
  • The couple sleeping in the north-east room because it gets the best light.

Correcting an east door without moving it

Most east doors on a weak pada can be eased with small things. For an east entrance I suggest a green doormat and an aluminium strip fixed at the threshold. If the door has slipped towards the south-east end, a copper strip and warm brick or red tones near the door suit it better. Keep the first few feet inside the door open and well lit.

Inside the house, keep the east windows clear and the curtains light, and move heavy cupboards to the south and west walls. If the north-east room has become the master bedroom, I usually give it to the children or turn it into a study, and move the parents to the south-west. If a washroom sits in the north-east, I start with basic remedies and then look at the family’s kundli before deciding how far to go. More of these approaches are in Vastu without breaking walls.

When the kundli changes the advice

East is the Sun’s side. A person whose Sun is weak, or who is running a Sun period, tends to feel the east entrance more than others in the family. That changes what I fix first. In an Astro-Vastu consultation I read your chart and your plan together. Astrology reads your time, Vastu reads your place, and Astro-Vastu reads both. Clients often tell me they feel a positive shift in about 21 days and see clearer results within about 90, but every home and every chart is different, so I never promise it.

If your east facing flat is still on paper, my checklist before booking a flat helps you compare units. If you are still choosing between facings, see the north facing house and west facing house guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jayanta or Indra the better pada for an east main door?

Both are first-class. I lean slightly towards Indra (E4) for families where someone works with government or large organisations, and towards Jayanta (E3) for business owners. Either one beats any position near the corners.

My compass shows 115 degrees at the door. Is my house east facing?

It is east leaning towards south-east. The east padas still apply, but the south-east influence is stronger than in a true east home, so I check the kitchen and the door end of the wall with more care.

Can a main door on the Shikhi pada be corrected without moving it?

Usually, yes. I use the threshold strip, the doormat colour and good lighting, and I keep anything red or fiery away from that corner. If a second door exists in a better pada, using it daily helps more than any remedy.

Do tall buildings on the east side spoil an east facing house?

They reduce the benefit of the facing, because the east loses its light and openness. Keep your own east side as open as you can: light curtains, low furniture, no heavy loft on that wall.

Is it a problem if the kitchen is right beside an east entrance?

Not if the kitchen is in the south-east corner and the door is in the middle half of the wall. Problems start when the door itself moves into the south-east corner next to the kitchen.
