Short answer: west facing house Vastu is favourable when the main door sits on Sugriva or Pushpadanta (W3 or W4), with Varuna (W5) as the next choice. A west facing house is good in Vastu and is linked with gains that build steadily over time. Keep the door away from both corners of the west wall, keep the north and east open, and put the master bedroom in the south-west.
West is Saturn’s side and Varuna’s direction. Saturn rewards patience and steady work, which is why I find many business families settled happily in west facing homes. The facing is fine. The pada is what decides the result.
Is a west facing house good?
Yes. In my consultations, west facing houses are among the most common and among the least worrying, once two things are checked. First, the door must not sit in the corner stretches of the wall. Second, the back of the house, which is the east, must not be closed off, because a west facing home gets its morning light only from behind.
The afternoon sun on the west front is often blamed on Vastu. It is a comfort issue, not a dosha. Bedrooms and the dining area handle that warmth well, and good curtains do the rest.
The 8 padas of the west wall
West side padas are counted from the south-west corner towards the north-west corner. Measure the full west side of your house or flat, divide it into eight equal parts, and see which part your door opening covers.
| Pada | Name | Where it sits | My reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| W1 | Pitru | At the south-west corner | Avoid. Traditionally linked with losses and strain on the elders of the house. |
| W2 | Dauvarika | Next to that corner | Avoid. Linked with feeling stuck, work without growth. |
| W3 | Sugriva | A quarter of the way in | Best. Linked with growth in income and business. |
| W4 | Pushpadanta | Just before the middle | Best. Linked with progress for children and a prosperous family. |
| W5 | Varuna | Just past the middle | Good. Ambition and gains; I keep an eye on overspending. |
| W6 | Asura | Three quarters along | Avoid. Linked with trouble from authorities and low mood. |
| W7 | Shosha | Near the north-west end | Avoid. Linked with sadness and money worries. |
| W8 | Papayakshma | At the north-west corner | Avoid. Linked with bad habits and ill health. |
A correction worth making here. You will often read that a west door should be “towards the north-west”. By the pada scheme, the last three padas before the north-west corner, Asura, Shosha and Papayakshma, are the ones I avoid. The good stretch is the centre of the wall, from the third pada to the fifth. The full 32-pada list is on my main door Vastu page.
Is your flat really west facing?
In Bangalore, many flats sold as “west facing” actually face south-west. The brochure rounds it off, and the buyer only finds out when someone takes a compass to the door. A south-west front is the hardest facing in Vastu and needs a different plan, so this check matters more than most.
Stand a step inside your main door, clear of the steel frame and the meter board, and take three compass readings looking out. A true west reads about 260 to 280 degrees. Around 235 to 255 the door leans west-south-west, and near 225 the home is really south-west facing. If it reads near 315, see the north-west facing guide. When you send me a reading for a session, take it at the entrance looking inwards; for a true west door that is roughly 80 to 100 degrees.
In apartments I go by your flat’s own front door. A west door on a common corridor is very common in Bangalore towers, and the pada rule applies along the length of your flat’s west side, not the building’s.

Room layout in a west facing house
The road is on the west, so the front holds the warmer, more lived-in rooms, and the back holds the light and water.
- Front, south-west corner: the master bedroom, with the heaviest wardrobes and the locker. My note on locker direction explains where in that room it goes.
- Front, centre: the entrance on W3 to W5 and the living room.
- Front, north-west corner: guest room, a toilet or the car porch.
- Centre: keep it open. A small dining table is fine; walls and toilets are not.
- Back, south-east: the kitchen, with the cook facing east.
- Back, north-east: the pooja corner, big windows and the underground sump.
- Back, north and east: study, family room, garden.

West facing house good for which rashi?
West belongs to Saturn, so by the traditional rule a west facing house suits Makara and Kumbha first, then Vrishabha and Tula, whose lord Venus is Saturn’s friend. Simha needs more care, because the Sun and Saturn do not get along. That is a first filter only. Your lagna, the 4th house and the dasha you are running tell me far more, and a west facing home can work for any rashi with the right door and rooms. I go through all eight facings on the house facing by rashi page.
Where west facing homes slip
- A door in the first two padas near the south-west corner, or the last three near the north-west.
- Big glass and an open sit-out on the west front, with the east side at the back closed by a store or a high wall.
- A toilet in the north-east, because the back of the house is out of sight and the plumbing was easy there. In Bangalore apartments this is very common and it is a big dosha.
- The kitchen pushed into the south-west to make the living room bigger.
Corrections without breaking walls
For a west door on a weak pada, I use an iron or steel strip at the threshold, grey, white or off-white tones at the entrance, a bright light, and something solid and heavy just inside the door. If the master bedroom is elsewhere, moving the couple to the south-west room is often the single most useful change.
For a north-east toilet, I start with basic remedies: door closed, no storage, blue tones, a bowl of sea salt changed every week. Then I check the residents’ kundli before deciding whether anything more is needed. Other no-construction fixes are in Vastu without breaking walls.
In an Astro-Vastu session I read the chart alongside the plan. Someone in a Saturn period usually feels a west front more strongly, so their door gets fixed first. Clients often describe a positive shift in about 21 days and clearer results within about 90. That is their experience, not a promise.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pushpadanta a good pada for a west main door?
Yes, it is one of the two best on the west wall, together with Sugriva just before it. Pushpadanta is the fourth pada counted from the south-west corner.
Why do you avoid the north-west end of the west wall when many say it is fine?
Because the pada scheme marks Asura, Shosha and Papayakshma, the three padas nearest the north-west corner, as weak. The popular rule is a rough shortcut. I go by the padas.
My compass reads 240 degrees at the door. Is that west or south-west?
It is west leaning towards south-west. I read it with the west padas but give the south-west side extra weight in the corrections.
Is a west facing house lucky for Makara and Kumbha?
Traditionally it is their best fit, because Saturn rules both rashis and the west. I still check the lagna and the running dasha before I call it a match.
Does the hot afternoon sun make a west facing house bad?
No. It is a comfort issue. Put bedrooms or the dining area on the west, use thicker curtains, and keep the living room towards the north or east if the plan allows.
