Short answer: is a south facing house good? Yes, it can be. South facing house Vastu is not about avoiding the facing, it is about where the door sits. Put the main door on Vitatha (S3) or Grihakshata (S4), in the half of the south wall nearer the south-east. Keep the south side solid, the north and east open, and give the master bedroom the south-west.
I say this to almost every family who calls me worried about a south facing flat: the facing alone does not make a house bad. Half the plots in any layout face south, and plenty of those homes do well. What hurts is a door on the wrong pada, or a south side left wide open while the north is built up.
Is a south facing house good or bad? My honest view
South is the direction of Yama in tradition and of Mars in the planetary map. Mars brings drive, courage and recognition for hard work. That is not a bad thing to have at your front door. The fear around south facing homes mostly comes from one real rule, that the south-west end of the south wall is a poor place for a door, stretched into a belief that the whole facing is unlucky.
So my answer is simple. A south facing house with the door in the right pada, a heavier south and an open north-east is a good home. One with the door near the south-west corner needs work, and I would rather you knew that before you pay the token amount.
South wall door padas: the 8 positions
On the south side the eight padas are counted from the south-east corner towards the south-west corner. Take the full length of the south side of the house or flat, split it into eight equal parts, and find the one your door opening falls on.
| Pada | Name | Where it sits | My reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 | Anila | At the south-east corner | Avoid. Traditionally linked with worries around children and restlessness. |
| S2 | Pusha | Next to that corner | Use with care. Linked with working hard for others and depending on them. |
| S3 | Vitatha | A quarter of the way in | Very good. One of the two padas I am happy to see a south door on. |
| S4 | Grihakshata | Just before the middle | Very good. Linked with steady income and a prosperous household. |
| S5 | Yama | Just past the middle | Avoid. Linked with rising expenses and health worries. |
| S6 | Gandharva | Three quarters along | Avoid. Linked with effort that goes unrewarded. |
| S7 | Bhringaraja | Near the south-west end | Avoid. Linked with money draining away. |
| S8 | Mriga | At the south-west corner | Avoid. Linked with setbacks for the next generation. |
Notice how narrow the good stretch is. On a south wall, only the third and fourth padas from the south-east corner are the ones I am happy with. Everything past the centre, towards the south-west, is the part to keep the door away from. That is why I always say “south-east half, never the south-west half”. The same 32-pada scheme for all four walls is on the main door page.
Check the facing before you decide
Take a phone compass reading a step inside the door, away from the grill and the meter board. Looking out, a true south reads close to 180 degrees, roughly 170 to 190. Around 150 to 160 the door leans south-south-east, and near 135 it is really a south-east facing house. Near 225 it is south-west facing, which is a different conversation. For online sessions I ask for the reading at the entrance looking inwards; for a south door that is about 0 to 10 or 350 to 360 degrees.

How I lay out a south facing house
The road is on the south, so the front of the house is the side Vastu wants heavy. I use that. The front gets the solid rooms, and the back gets the open ones.
| Where | Room | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Front left, south-west | Master bedroom | The heaviest, most settled corner. Thick walls and smaller windows work here. |
| Front, south-east half | Entrance and living room | The door stays on S3 or S4, and guests meet you there. |
| Front right, south-east | Kitchen | The fire corner, with the cook facing east. |
| Centre | Open passage or light seating | The Brahmasthan stays clear. |
| Back, north and east | Family room, study, big windows, garden | This is your open side, so keep it light. |
| Back, north-east | Pooja corner, underground sump | Water and prayer belong in the quietest, brightest corner. |
| Back, north-west | Guest room, toilet, utility | Movement and drainage suit the north-west. |
Heavy curtains on the south windows help in summer as well as in Vastu. For the bedroom itself, the bed and wardrobe rules are in my bedroom Vastu guide, and for the sump and overhead tank, the water tank page covers both.

What goes wrong in south facing homes
- The door on Yama or any pada past the centre, towards the south-west.
- A deep open front yard on the south, with the house pushed against the north boundary.
- A sump or borewell dug next to the south gate because the road pipe is there.
- Big glass and light curtains along the south side.
- The couple sleeping in the north-east or the south-east.
Fixing a south door on a weak pada
If the house has a second door in a better pada, the strongest step is to make that the one the family uses every day. Where there is no other door, I work with a copper strip set into the threshold, red tones in the doormat and around the frame, a bright light at the entrance and something solid and heavy just inside, such as a wooden bench or a large planter. Many families keep a Hanuman image near a south door. I suggest it only where it fits the family’s own beliefs.
Then move weight towards the south and south-west: wardrobes, the locker, bookshelves. Keep the north-east clear. Most of this needs no construction at all, and the approach is explained further in Vastu without breaking walls.
South doors are the ones I am most careful with. Move the door too far to the left and it slips into the south-east; too far to the right and it slips into the south-west. If the door sits on S3 or S4, it is very good. If it does not, there are a lot of corrections to make, and for those homes I usually suggest Astro-Vastu, because the chart shows which corrections that family really needs.
South facing homes and the birth chart
South is Mars’s direction. By the traditional rule, a south facing home suits Mesha and Vrishchika first, and then Simha, Dhanu and Meena. Makara and Kumbha need more care. I use that only as a starting point, and the full table is on the house facing by rashi page. A family running a Mars period, or with Mars strong in the 4th house, often feels a south door more than others.
An Astro-Vastu reading puts your chart next to your plan, so the corrections are ordered for your family and not for a textbook house. People often tell me they notice a positive shift within about 21 days and clearer results by about 90. I cannot promise that, because no two homes or charts are the same.
Frequently asked questions
Should I drop a south facing flat just because others avoid them?
No. Check the door pada and the north-east first. If the door is on S3 or S4 and the north-east is clean, a south facing flat can serve you as well as any other.
Is Grihakshata the best pada for a south main door?
Grihakshata (S4) is one of the two best, along with Vitatha (S3), the pada just before it. Both are very good for a south main door; anywhere else on the south wall needs corrections.
My south door is on the Yama pada. What can I do without breaking the wall?
Use a copper threshold strip, red tones at the entrance, strong lighting and a heavy element just inside the door. If another door is available, shift daily use to it.
Is a south facing house good for a Mesha or Vrishchika family?
By the traditional rule it is their natural facing, because Mars rules both rashis and the south. I still read the lagna and the dasha before calling it a good fit.
Should the south side of the house have small windows?
Smaller windows and heavier curtains on the south are better than large glass. You do not need to seal it; you need it to feel more closed than the north.
