Short answer: There are five eclipses in 2027: two solar (6 February and 2 August) and three penumbral lunar (20-21 February, 18 July and 17 August). Only two can really be seen from India: the faint lunar eclipse before dawn on 21 February and the partial solar eclipse on the afternoon of 2 August. The 2 August surya grahan is the one with sutak; in Delhi it runs from 3:53 pm to 5:02 pm IST and in Bengaluru from 3:58 pm to 5:43 pm. It falls in Cancer, close to Ketu.

All eclipses of 2027 (grahan 2027 list) with India times

DateEclipseIn India (IST)
6 Feb 2027Annular solar eclipseNot visible (after sunset). No sutak.
21 Feb 2027Penumbral lunar eclipse (night of 20-21 Feb)Faint: 2:42 am to 6:43 am, deepest 4:43 am. No sutak.
18 Jul 2027Penumbral lunar eclipseToo faint to notice, around 9:30 pm. No sutak.
2 Aug 2027Solar eclipse, partial from IndiaDelhi 3:53 pm to 5:02 pm; Bengaluru 3:58 pm to 5:43 pm. Sutak about 12 hours before.
17 Aug 2027Penumbral lunar eclipseNot visible (Indian daytime). No sutak.

A penumbral lunar eclipse only dims the Moon slightly, so most people will not notice it, and tradition does not keep sutak for it. The two dates that matter in India are the early hours of 21 February and the afternoon of 2 August.

Times are in IST for the city named and shift by a few minutes from one city to the next. I checked them against two separate eclipse tables, and I will add more cities closer to the date.

Why the eclipse falls in Cancer

Eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon meet near Rahu or Ketu. From 5 December 2026 the nodes sit on the Capricorn and Cancer axis, so the eclipses of this period fall in those two signs. On 2 August 2027 the Sun is in Cancer with Ketu, and the New Moon joins them there. My Rahu Ketu transit page covers the node shift itself.

Cancer is the Moon’s own sign, and the Moon belongs to the north-west of a home. When an eclipse falls in Cancer, I watch how that corner is used by people whose charts lean on the Moon.

Sutak: what it is and what families usually do

Sutak is the period before an eclipse when tradition asks for restraint. For a solar eclipse it starts about twelve hours earlier, and it applies only when the eclipse is visible where you live. Customs vary by region and family, but these are the common ones:

  • Cooking and eating stop once sutak begins, and cooked food is not kept over
  • A tulsi leaf is placed in stored water, milk and pickles
  • Temples close their doors and reopen after cleaning
  • People chant, read scripture or sit quietly during the eclipse
  • After it ends, a bath, fresh clothes and a small donation
  • Children, older people and anyone unwell are usually exempt from the fasting rules

Many families also keep extra customs for pregnant women. Follow your own tradition, and for anything to do with health, follow your doctor first.

Watching the eclipse safely

Never look at the Sun directly, even when most of it is covered. Ordinary sunglasses are not enough. Use proper solar eclipse viewers from a trusted source, or watch a live broadcast. A pinhole projection on paper is a simple way to show children.

The 2 August eclipse for each Moon sign

An eclipse is felt most in the house it falls in, counted from your Moon and from your Lagna. It is a sensitive day, not a cause for fear, and most traditions simply advise against starting anything important on it.

  • Cancer: on your Moon sign, the most sensitive placement; keep the day quiet
  • Leo: in your 12th, sleep, expenses and travel
  • Virgo: in your 11th, traditionally the easiest place for an eclipse
  • Libra: in your 10th, work and reputation
  • Scorpio: in your 9th, father, teachers and long travel
  • Sagittarius: in your 8th, joint money and sudden matters
  • Capricorn: in your 7th, spouse and partners
  • Aquarius: in your 6th, routines and rivals; often handled well
  • Pisces: in your 5th, children, study and investments
  • Aries: in your 4th, home, mother and peace of mind
  • Taurus: in your 3rd, effort and courage; usually a lighter effect
  • Gemini: in your 2nd, family, savings and speech

If you are planning a wedding, griha pravesh or a vehicle purchase around August 2027, pick a date away from the eclipse; my shubh muhurat 2027 page lists the good windows. Marriage questions are covered on marriage timing astrology, and work questions on career astrology.

An eclipse in the Moon’s sign, read with your home

An eclipse lights up one axis of your chart for a short while, and each house on that axis also points to a part of your home. Reading the chart and the floor plan together shows which zone that house of your chart points to, and whether it needs attention.

Say your Moon is in Cancer. The eclipse falls on your Moon sign itself, so I would study the north-west of your home, the Moon’s zone, and check whether it holds the bedroom, a toilet or heavy storage. The ₹1,499 astrology reading is a light first step. If you want both looked at together, my combined chart and Vastu session is made for this.

Your eclipse reading

If the eclipse touches your Moon sign, your Lagna or a planet in your chart, a short reading helps you plan the weeks around it. On a 45-minute call for ₹1,499, online or at my Begur studio by appointment, I check the eclipse against your kundli and dasha, and send written remedies within 48 hours. Book a reading, or see how my online astrology consultation works.

Every eclipse falls on a full Moon or a new Moon. The whole year of those days is on my Purnima and Amavasya 2027 list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many eclipses are there in 2027?

Five. Solar eclipses on 6 February (annular) and 2 August (total along its path), and penumbral lunar eclipses on 20-21 February, 18 July and 17 August. From India you can see the faint lunar eclipse before dawn on 21 February and the partial solar eclipse on 2 August.

Is the February 2027 chandra grahan visible in India?

Yes, in the early hours of 21 February, from 2:42 am to 6:43 am IST, deepest at 4:43 am. It is a penumbral eclipse, so the Moon only dims a little and no sutak is kept.

Is the 6 February 2027 solar eclipse visible in India?

No. The annular eclipse of 6 February happens after sunset in India, over South America, the Atlantic and Africa, so there is no sutak for it here.

Is there a solar eclipse in India in 2027?

Yes. The solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 is visible from India. Along its central path over North Africa and Arabia it is total; from India the Sun is only partly covered, and how much depends on your city. In Delhi it runs from 3:53 pm to 5:02 pm IST, and in Bengaluru from 3:58 pm to 5:43 pm.

When does sutak start for the solar eclipse?

By tradition, about twelve hours before the eclipse begins at your location, and it ends when the eclipse is over. Sutak is observed only where the eclipse can be seen. For 2 August 2027 that is about 3:53 am in Delhi and 3:58 am in Bengaluru.

Can we eat food during sutak?

Traditional practice is to finish meals before sutak begins and not cook again until after the eclipse and a bath. Stored items get a tulsi leaf. Children, older people and anyone unwell usually eat as needed. Follow your family custom, and your doctor where health is involved.

Which rashi is affected by the 2 August 2027 eclipse?

Cancer Moon signs feel it most, since it falls on their sign. Capricorn gets it in the 7th, Aries in the 4th and Libra in the 10th. Virgo, Aquarius and Taurus usually feel it least. Your Lagna and any planet near the eclipse point matter as much as the Moon sign.

What should I do after the eclipse ends?

Most families bathe, change into fresh clothes, clean the prayer area and cook fresh food. Donating grain, clothes or money to someone in need is a common custom. Keep big starts, such as signing a deal or a griha pravesh, for a later auspicious date.
