Vastu for Main Door: General Rules and the 32 Entrance Padas

Short answer: Vastu for main door rests on a few rules. The main door should be the largest in the house, open inwards and sit on a good pada of its wall, away from the corners. Keep it lit, clean and unblocked from the front. In a flat where the door is fixed, the threshold, colour and light do the correcting.

Why the main door gets so much attention

Everything enters a house through the main door: people, light, air and, in the language of Vastu, opportunity. That is why the door’s position on its wall counts for more than the facing of the house. Two homes on the same road can both face north, and one can have a strong entrance while the other has a weak one, only because of where the opening was cut. My Vastu guide for the home puts the entrance in context with the rest of the rooms.

The 32 entrance padas, in plain words

Classical Vastu divides the boundary of the Vastu Purusha Mandala into 32 parts, eight on each side. Each part, called a pada, has a presiding deity; the names come from texts such as the Brihat Samhita. To find your door’s pada, measure the full wall from corner to corner, divide it into eight equal parts, and see which part the door opening covers. If the opening straddles two padas, I read both.

SideCounted fromThe eight padas, in order
EastNorth-east cornerShikhi, Parjanya, Jayanta, Indra, Surya, Satya, Bhrisha, Antariksha
SouthSouth-east cornerAnila, Pusha, Vitatha, Grihakshata, Yama, Gandharva, Bhringaraja, Mriga
WestSouth-west cornerPitru, Dauvarika, Sugriva, Pushpadanta, Varuna, Asura, Shosha, Papayakshma
NorthNorth-west cornerRoga, Naga, Mukhya, Bhallata, Soma, Bhujaga, Aditi, Diti

Some padas welcome you in and some do not, and the good ones differ by side, so I have written the door positions out for each facing: my guides to the north-facing, east-facing, south-facing and west-facing house, and for corner-facing plots the north-east, south-east, south-west and north-west facing pages.

The padas are fixed by the plan, but how strongly a weak entrance is felt depends on the people walking through it. Two owners of the same flat can live with an identical door quite differently, because their charts differ.

Rules that apply to every main door

  • It is the largest and strongest door in the home.
  • It opens inwards, into the house.
  • Two shutters are traditional for a house; a single solid door is fine for a flat.
  • Solid wood or a solid core. A hollow or cracked door is the first thing I ask people to replace.
  • A raised threshold, even a slim one.
  • No squeak, no sticking, no broken handle or lock.
  • Nothing directly in front of it: a pillar, a lift shaft, a pole, a tree, or another door lined up exactly opposite. The old texts call this dwar vedha.
  • A good light outside after dark, and a clear nameplate.
  • No dustbin, shoe pile or broken item beside it. Where shoes should live is on my shoe rack Vastu page.
  • No staircase starting straight in front of it on the inside.

Flats where the door is fixed

In an apartment you cannot move the door, and I never suggest it. What you can change is how the door sits in your home. Start by finding its pada with a compass reading taken a little inside, away from the steel frame and the switchboard. If the door falls on a weak pada, I work with three things: the threshold, the colours of the door and the doormat, and the light.

A metal strip set into the threshold, chosen for that direction, is usually my first step. The doormat and the door colour follow the element of that side. A bright light above the door, kept on through the evening, comes next. Inside, the first few feet past the door should be open, with no cabinet jutting out and nothing left lying on the floor.

Independent houses and villas have a second entrance, the compound gate, with rules of its own; I cover those on the main gate Vastu page.

Getting the main door ready for Diwali 2026

Dhanteras falls on 6 November and Diwali on 8 November 2026. The festival starts at the door, so finish any repair before Dhanteras: oil the hinges, fix the lock, replace a faded nameplate.

  • Toran: fresh mango leaves or marigolds strung across the top of the frame. Take dry leaves down after the festival rather than leaving them up for months.
  • Lights: diyas on both sides of the threshold, and string lights that frame the door without covering it.
  • Rangoli at the threshold, finished before evening.
  • Shubh and Labh, or a swastika, on either side of the frame if your family uses them.

The rest of the home’s festival preparation, room by room, is in my Diwali Vastu tips for 2026.

Your door’s direction and the planet you are running

The padas tell me whether an entrance is strong on paper. The chart tells me how much that entrance matters to you at this point in your life. Each side of the house has a planet: the Sun rules the east, Mercury the north, Saturn the west and Mars the south. A door on the side of the planet whose period you are running plays a larger part in your days than a door on any other wall.

Take a north door. For someone in a Mercury period, which Jyotish ties to trade, study and communication, I check that north entrance and its pada with more care than usual. The door check is part of my ₹1,499 home Vastu call. When you want your entrance read alongside your dasha, my Astro-Vastu consultation brings the two together.

Have your main door checked

Send me the floor plan with north marked and a photo of the door from outside and from inside. I will find its pada and tell you what, if anything, needs correcting. Home Vastu is ₹1,499 for one floor or one flat, on a 45-minute call online or at my Begur studio, and the written report arrives within 48 hours. Frequently Asked Questions

Is it a problem if my main door faces the neighbour’s door?

Two doors exactly opposite each other are very common in apartment corridors. It is a mild issue. Keep your door and doormat clean and well lit, and if the two doors line up exactly, a small plant or a nameplate slightly off-centre on your side is enough.

Should the main door open inside or outside?

Inside. A door that opens inwards draws people and light into the home, and it also suits most building rules for corridors. Outward-opening main doors are rare in Indian homes, and I suggest changing the hinge side only when it is easy to do.

Can the main door and the back door be in a straight line?

I prefer them not to be. A straight line from front to back lets everything pass through without settling. If they already line up, place a plant, a screen or a piece of furniture partway along the line so the path bends slightly.

Is a sliding or glass door acceptable as a main door?

For the main entrance I prefer a solid hinged door. A sliding glass door works well to a balcony or garden but feels too open as the main way in. If the main entrance has one, add a solid door or a strong grill on the outside.

Can I hang a Ganesha picture outside the main door?

Many families do. Keep it small, clean and placed with care, and add a matching one on the inside so it faces into the home as well. Replace anything torn or faded rather than leaving it up.
