Short answer: Vastu for kitchen starts with the south-east, the fire corner, with the north-west as the second choice. Cook facing east. Keep the gas stove in the south-east part of the kitchen and the sink towards the north, never right next to each other. The fridge goes on the south-west, south or west side. A kitchen in any other corner can be eased without moving it.

What is the best direction for a kitchen as per Vastu?
The south-east is the best direction for a kitchen, and the north-west is the second best. Every other position can be lived with once the stove, the colours and the upkeep are set right.
Vastu reads a home through the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the square grid laid over the floor plan. Each of the 8 directions in it carries an element and a ruling planet. The south-east is fire and belongs to Venus. The north-west is air and belongs to the Moon. A kitchen is the one room where a flame burns every day, so it sits most comfortably in the fire corner, and air feeds a fire, which is why the north-west comes next.
The kitchen that worries me is the one in the north-east, the water corner ruled by Jupiter, which should be the lightest and calmest part of the home. My guide to Vastu for home, room by room shows where the kitchen fits among the other rooms. When 8 directions are too coarse for a real plan, I use the 16 Vastu zones and what each one holds; there, the zone just south of the south-east also takes a kitchen extension well.

Kitchen Vastu for all 8 directions and the centre
Here is my verdict for a kitchen in each direction, and what I do when it is already built. You will notice I never ask anyone to break a kitchen.
To find which of these your kitchen sits in, take a reading from the centre of the home with my Vastu compass for finding the kitchen direction.
| Kitchen location | My verdict | Why | What I do if it is already there |
|---|---|---|---|
| South-east | Best | Fire zone, ruled by Venus | Nothing to correct; get the stove and sink right |
| North-west | Second best | Air zone of the Moon, which feeds fire | Stove in the kitchen’s south-east part; keep counters clear |
| South | Workable | Mars’s zone, which sits well with fire | Cook facing east; keep the north side of the kitchen light |
| East | Workable | The Sun’s zone, bright and close to the south-east | Stove at the south end of the east counter, never the north end |
| West | Workable with care | Saturn’s zone, better suited to dining | Stove in the kitchen’s own south-east part; earthy colours |
| North | Avoid | Mercury’s zone of money and new openings, on the water side | Stove towards the west end of the counter; light green or lemon walls |
| South-west | Avoid | Rahu’s zone, meant for weight and steadiness | Stove in the kitchen’s south-east part; heavy stores on the south-west wall |
| North-east | Worst | Jupiter’s water corner, which should stay light | Green marble or a green mat under the burner, no red; see the section below |
| Centre (brahmasthan) | Avoid | The centre of the home should stay open | Keep it spotless, no heavy loft, exhaust running |
Whatever the corner, one rule holds inside the kitchen: the stove goes to the kitchen’s own south-east part and the cook faces east.
Which direction should you face while cooking?
Face east while cooking. After the location of the kitchen, it is the first thing I check.
East is the Sun’s direction and brings in the morning light. If the counter makes east impossible, north is my next choice, then west. Facing south while cooking is the one I ask families to change, even if it means sliding the hob along the counter by a couple of feet.

Gas stove direction as per Vastu
The gas stove goes in the south-east part of the kitchen, on the east or south counter, placed so the cook faces east. Keep it a few inches off the wall and out of the exact corner, so there is room to work.
The gas cylinder belongs near the stove, in a ventilated cabinet on the south-east side, never under the sink. An induction hob counts as fire too, so the same rules apply to it. I also avoid two things that are as much common sense as Vastu: a hob right under a beam or a heavy loft, and a hob under an open window where the wind keeps catching the flame.
Sink direction as per Vastu in the kitchen
The sink goes in the north or north-east part of the kitchen, ideally on a different wall from the stove. The stove is fire and the sink is water, and Vastu prefers a clear stretch of counter between them.
In an L-shaped kitchen this usually means the hob on the platform along the east or south wall and the sink on the north side. In a straight one-wall kitchen, which many 1BHK and 2BHK flats have, I ask for about two feet of counter between the two, and a chopping area in that gap is the natural use for it.
Let the sink drain cleanly. A slow drain or a leaking trap under it gets fixed the same week; a damp cabinet is a small fault that keeps growing.
Fridge direction as per Vastu
The best fridge direction as per Vastu is the south-west of the kitchen, and the south or the west wall is also fine. Keep it out of the north-east and away from the hob.
The fridge counts as water and it carries weight, and it runs all day, so the north-east corner, which wants to stay light, is the wrong home for it. Stand it against the south or west wall so its door opens towards the north or the east. Leave a few inches behind it for air, and keep the top clear instead of using it as a shelf.
In a small flat where the fridge has to stand outside the kitchen, the south or west wall of the dining area works just as well.
Where should the microwave, mixer and other appliances go?
Appliances that heat go on the south or south-east side; anything that holds water goes north or north-east.
| Item | Best spot in the kitchen | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Stove or hob | South-east part, cook facing east | North-east; facing south while cooking |
| Sink and tap | North or north-east part | Right beside the stove |
| Fridge | South-west, south or west | The north-east corner |
| Gas cylinder | South-east, near the stove | Under the sink |
| Microwave and oven | South or south-east wall | North-east |
| Mixer, grinder, toaster | South-east or south counter | Beside the sink |
| Water purifier, drinking water | North or north-east wall | Next to the stove |
| Chimney and exhaust | Above the hob, or on the east wall | A kitchen with no ventilation |
| Dishwasher | North-west or west, on the sink line | Squeezed under the hob |
| Grain and heavy stores | South or west shelves | Heavy lofts in the north-east |
| Dustbin | West, or the south-west side away from the stove | North-east |
Where should drinking water and the water purifier go in the kitchen?
Keep drinking water, the purifier and any clay pot on the north or north-east wall of the kitchen. It is water’s own corner, and this is one of the easiest corrections to make.
Mount the purifier on the wall, not on the counter beside the hob. Copper or steel water vessels suit the same corner. Keep the spot dry.
Kitchen storage and lofts as per Vastu
Heavy storage goes on the south and west walls, and the north and east stay lighter.
Grain bins, the masala stock, the pressure-cooker cupboard and tall pantry units all belong along the south or the west. The habit I see most in Bangalore kitchens is a north-east loft packed with steel vessels and old boxes. Move the heavy things to the south or west loft and leave the north-east loft nearly empty, with only light, rarely used items. Nothing gets stored above the stove.
Can the dining table be in the kitchen?
Yes. A small table or a breakfast counter inside the kitchen is fine on its west or north-west side, away from the hob.
Eat facing east or north if you can, and keep the table out of the path between the stove and the sink. Where the main dining table belongs in the rest of the home, and who sits where, is on my page on dining room Vastu: table, direction and seating.
Kitchen door, windows and exhaust as per Vastu
A kitchen door works best on the east, north or west side of the kitchen; I avoid a door cut into its south-west corner. Windows and the exhaust fan do best on the east or north wall.
The stove should not be the first thing you see from the kitchen door. A small offset along the counter is enough. Many flats have an inner kitchen with no outside window at all. For those, a working chimney or exhaust and bright lighting matter more than any remedy, and I put them first on the list.
Is a north-west kitchen good as per Vastu?
Yes, the north-west is the second-best place for a kitchen. The Moon rules this corner, and food tends to move out of a north-west kitchen quickly, so families who host a lot often like it.
Set it up the same way inside: the stove in the kitchen’s own south-east part, the cook facing east, the sink on the north side and the fridge to the south-west or west. The outer walls of a north-west kitchen are usually the north and the west, so the window often lands on the north wall, which is ideal. What I watch is clutter. The north-west is the zone of movement, and a north-west kitchen crammed with stock loses that ease.

Kitchen colours, slab and flooring as per Vastu
Warm, light colours suit a kitchen. Peach, orange, warm yellow and cream work in a south-east kitchen; light green or lemon calms a kitchen that sits in the north or north-east.
| Kitchen location | Walls | Slab and backsplash | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| South-east | Peach, orange, warm yellow | Beige, brown or terracotta granite | A blue backsplash, which puts water into the fire zone |
| North-west | Cream, white, light grey | Light granite or quartz | Very dark slab and walls together |
| North or north-east | Light green, lemon | White or green marble | Red tiles, black granite |
| South, west or south-west | Beige, light brown | Brown or tan granite | Very dark floor tiles |
For the floor, light matte tiles or stone are practical and sit well in Vastu terms. If the kitchen has a floor drain, it is best on the north or east side. The full room-by-room chart is on my page on Vastu colours for every room in the home.
Open kitchen Vastu in Bangalore flats
An open kitchen is fine in Vastu. Many new flats in Bangalore have one that runs into the hall, sometimes with only a breakfast counter in between, and Vastu minds only two things.
Open kitchens are one of several things that change in a flat; the rest are in Vastu for flat and apartment: facing, rooms and 7 mistakes.
First, the stove should not be visible straight from the main door; the fixes for that are in the next section. Second, the kitchen should not spill into the north-east of the hall. Keep that end for the sofa or for open floor.
The facing of the building matters too. Kitchens in an east facing house and in a west facing house tend to land in different corners, and those guides show the usual layouts. The same is true of a north facing house and a south facing house.
For open-plan kitchens with an island, as in many American houses, see open-plan kitchen Vastu in US homes.
What if the kitchen faces the main door?
It is fixable without construction. What Vastu dislikes is the stove being visible from the entrance; a kitchen that merely opens near the door is a smaller issue.
- Break the line of sight with a slatted screen, a tall plant or a cabinet at the end of the counter.
- Slide the hob along the counter so it is not in direct view from the door.
- Keep the kitchen door, or a light curtain, closed when people come in.
- Keep the foyer bright and uncluttered so the eye goes there first.
How the entrance itself should be placed is on my main door Vastu page.
Can the kitchen share a wall with a toilet or the pooja room?
It is better avoided, especially the wall behind the stove. If the plan gives you no choice, keep the hob on a different wall from the shared one, keep the toilet door closed and the exhaust working, and make sure no plumbing leak ever reaches the kitchen side.
A toilet door that opens straight towards the stove is the version I correct first. My page on toilet Vastu: placement, seat direction and fixes covers it from the bathroom side.
The pooja unit should not share the wall behind the stove either. If the kitchen is the only place for a prayer shelf, keep it on the north-east or east wall, above the counter and away from the hob, and treat it as a last resort; my pooja room Vastu for flats page has better spots.
What can you do if the kitchen is in the north-east?
Work inside it; don’t move it. This is the hardest kitchen to live with, and in builder flats it is not rare.
- Move the hob towards the south-east part of the kitchen if the plumbing and gas line allow. Even one counter length helps.
- Cook facing east, never facing the north-east corner itself.
- Put green marble or a green mat under the burner, and take red items out of that corner.
- Give the north-east corner of the kitchen to water: the sink, a purifier or a clay pot.
- Use soft colours such as cream, light green and lemon. Avoid red tiles and black granite in that corner.
- Keep this kitchen especially clean, with nothing piled on top of the cabinets.
- Run the exhaust while cooking and leave a window open when you can.
Kitchen Vastu remedies without moving the kitchen
Most kitchen faults can be corrected with placement, colour and habit. This is the order I usually work in, with the effort each one takes.
| Problem | Remedy | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Cook faces south | Shift or turn the hob so the cook faces east | Medium: needs the gas line moved |
| Stove and sink side by side | Keep two feet of counter between them as a chopping area | Low |
| Kitchen in the south-west | Earthy colours, hob in the kitchen’s south-east part, heavy stock on the south-west wall | Low to medium |
| Stove visible from the main door | Screen, tall plant or end cabinet | Low |
| No window in the kitchen | Chimney or exhaust and bright lighting | Medium |
| Heavy loft in the north-east | Shift the heavy items to the south or west loft | Low |
| Toilet wall behind the stove | Move the hob to another wall; seal every leak | Medium |
| Black granite in a north kitchen | Light backsplash and mats now; change the slab at the next renovation | Medium |
More fixes of this kind, for every room, are in Vastu remedies without breaking walls.
How does your birth chart change kitchen Vastu?
It changes which kitchen correction comes first. In Jyotish each direction has a ruling planet: Venus holds the south-east and Jupiter the north-east.
A standard kitchen check places the stove by element. Reading the chart as well tells me whose planets are under the most pressure. For someone running a Jupiter mahadasha, a north-east kitchen is the first thing I correct, ahead of anything else in the flat, because that corner is carrying their period. The same south-east kitchen can also suit one cook very well and sit less easily with another, which is why I always ask who does most of the cooking.
Your kitchen is fully covered in my ₹1,499 home Vastu session, and for most families that is the right place to begin. If the person who cooks, or the head of the family, is going through a heavy period, the chart-and-home Astro-Vastu session puts both on one page and orders the kitchen changes around their dasha.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the kitchen and toilet be next to each other as per Vastu?
They can sit side by side if the shared wall is not the one behind the stove. Keep the toilet door shut, the exhaust running and the plumbing dry, and never let the toilet door open towards the hob.
Is a kitchen in the south-west bad as per Vastu?
It is not ideal, because the south-west is meant for weight and steadiness rather than fire. I correct it by moving the hob to the south-east part of that kitchen, using earthy colours and keeping the room tidy. I rarely see a need to relocate it.
Which colour granite or tiles suit a kitchen?
Warm and earthy shades work well: cream, beige, light yellow, terracotta and light brown. Red in small touches is fine near the stove. I avoid black granite across the whole counter and very dark tiles, especially when the kitchen is in the north or north-east.
Can I keep the stove on the north wall?
I avoid it where possible, because it puts the cook facing north or the flame on the water side. If the counter only runs along the north wall, place the hob towards its west end, away from the north-east corner, and keep the east end for the sink.
Can the fridge stand in the north-east of the kitchen?
I would move it if you can. The north-east of a kitchen wants to stay light, and a fridge is heavy and runs all day. A south or west wall is better. If the layout leaves no other spot, keep the fridge a little away from the corner and keep the top of it clear.
Which direction should the fridge face as per Vastu?
With the fridge on the south or west wall, its door opens towards the north or the east, which is what I prefer. The wall it stands on matters more than the way the door swings.
What is the right gas stove direction as per Vastu?
South-east part of the kitchen, with the person cooking facing east.
What is the sink direction as per Vastu?
North or north-east of the kitchen, on a different wall from the stove where the layout allows.
Is cooking facing north okay as per Vastu?
Yes, it is my second choice after east. It works well in kitchens where the counter runs along the south wall, as long as the hob is not in the north-east corner of the kitchen.
Do I need to break a north-east kitchen?
No. I do not ask families to demolish a kitchen. Shifting the hob, a green base under the burner, soft colours and strict upkeep carry most of the correction, and in a flat that is usually all you can do anyway.
