Most families who call me in October have the same question. The keys are coming, the painters are booked, so which day do we move in? Below are the dates for the rest of 2026, what to do if you miss them, and the hour of Vastu checks I ask every buyer to do before the pooja is fixed.

Moving in after Dev Uthani Ekadashi, 20 November 2026? That is the date many families I speak to hold out for, so settle the pooja and the movers a week or two ahead. On the day itself, walk in with a calm, positive mind and hold on to the good things you want for this home; that matters as much as the date. Before handover, walk the flat with my flat buying Vastu checklist; the main door, the kitchen corner and the master bedroom are the three checks I would not skip.
Treat this list as a shortlist, not as your muhurat. The same day can sit well for one family and badly for another, because the tithi and nakshatra of the day have to agree with the charts of the people moving in, the head of the family first. The same thinking applies to the rooms. A muhurat has to suit the people moving in, and so does a layout: which bedroom the head of the family takes, or where the pooja corner goes, can matter more in one chart than another.
If you miss December: the 2027 windows
Once the kharmas is over, Makar Sankranti on 15 January 2027 opens the year again. A few festival days are popular with families who like a well-known date: Vasant Panchami on 11 February, Ugadi on 7 April (many Kannada and Telugu families in Bengaluru prefer it), and Akshaya Tritiya on 8 or 9 May depending on the panchang. A festival is not automatically right for your chart, so I still check it. One date to stay away from is 2 August 2027. There is a solar eclipse visible in India that day, sutak applies, and I would not plan a house-warming around it.

Three kinds of griha pravesh
The old texts name three, and the kind decides how strictly the date is chosen.
- Apoorva: the first entry into a newly built or newly bought home. The muhurat matters most here.
- Sapoorva: coming back to a home you have lived in, after a long stay away, such as a posting abroad.
- Dwandwah: moving back after major repairs or rebuilding, or after damage from fire or flooding.
A new flat handed over by a Bengaluru builder is almost always the first kind, and so is a villa you have built on your own plot.
My Vastu checklist for handover day
The ceremony lasts a morning. The layout stays with you for years. So before the pandit is booked, walk through the empty home with the keys in one hand and a phone compass in the other. Take the reading a few steps inside the main door, away from the lift, the grille and any steel cupboard, because metal throws the needle off.
- Facing: compare your reading with the north arrow on the builder’s drawing. Brochures sometimes mark north loosely; trust the compass.
- Main door: note where on its wall the door sits, not only which way it faces. My guides for east-facing homes and west-facing homes show the strong and weak stretches.
- North-east: it should be the lightest corner. Check that the electrician has not put the inverter, the meter box or a shoe rack there.
- Kitchen: find the stove. South-east or north-west is good. A stove in the north-east needs a correction before the first milk is boiled.
- Toilets: mark any that fall in the north-east, the south-west or the centre.
- Master bedroom: see whether the south-west room can take the main bed and the locker. Set the bed head south for the first night; my sleeping direction guide for a new home covers the other rooms.
- Water: note the sump, the overhead tank and the utility tap. In a flat you rarely control these, but they tell me what the building does around you.
- Pooja place: decide the wall now, so the ceremony happens where the mandir will stay. If there is no spare corner, my pooja corner guide for flats helps.

On the day itself
Customs differ from one family and region to the next, so follow your elders first. The common thread is short. A kalash at the door, stepping in with the right foot, a small pooja or havan, and milk boiled in the new kitchen until it rises over the rim as a sign of plenty. Many families also keep a lamp burning and someone sleeping at home that first night. Keep the floors mostly clear of boxes for the ceremony, then bring in heavy furniture afterwards, starting with the south-west rooms.

Moving in on the right day, into the right rooms
Most families treat the date and the house as two separate checks. When I look at both in one sitting, the chart that picks the muhurat also tells me which zones of the new home need settling before the first night, so the handover list gets shorter and sharper.
For example, if the head of the family is in a Saturn mahadasha, I check the west of the new flat closely, since Saturn governs that side, and suggest which room the elders or the main earner should take. Can we do griha pravesh before the interiors are finished?
Many families do. The ceremony needs a working kitchen to boil milk, a clean pooja spot and water and power in place. Wardrobes and fittings can follow later. Avoid moving in while walls are still being broken, because that changes the layout after the ceremony.
Does griha pravesh correct Vastu problems in a flat?
No. The ceremony marks a good beginning, but it does not move a kitchen out of the north-east or a toilet out of the centre. Those need their own corrections, most of them without demolition, which is why I suggest the layout check before the date.
