Short answer: House number numerology adds the digits of your door number and reduces the total to one digit. Flat 304 gives 3 + 0 + 4 = 7. Each total from 1 to 9 suggests a mood for the home, read against the birth numbers of the people living there. In my practice it comes after the Vastu of the layout.

Which number to count

Before any adding, decide which number is really yours. This is where most people go wrong, especially in apartments.

  • Flat in an apartment: count your flat number, not the building or tower number, which belongs to everyone.
  • Independent house or villa: count the number on your gate or front door.
  • Flat with a block letter, like A-304: I add the letter’s Chaldean value too (A is 1, B is 2), since it is part of how people find you. Some numerologists leave the letter out.
  • Bengaluru site numbers with a slash, like 45/2: I add every digit on both sides of the slash.

So flat 304 gives 3 + 0 + 4 = 7. A-304 gives 1 + 3 + 0 + 4 = 8. Site 45/2 gives 4 + 5 + 2 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Flat 1102 gives 1 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 4.

The number on the door is one clue about a home; the direction it faces is another. Quite often the two point to the same planet, a 1 to the Sun and the east, an 8 to Saturn and the west, and then I pay closer attention.

What each house number suggests

House numberPlanetTends to suit a home where
1Sunpeople are independent or starting something of their own
2Moona couple or family values calm and closeness
3Jupiterthere are students, teachers or a growing family
4Rahupeople work in technology or keep odd hours; it asks for order
5Mercurythere are many visitors, a home business or lots of travel
6Venuscomfort, hosting, family and the arts matter most
7Ketusomeone studies, writes, prays or wants quiet
8Saturnpeople are settling for the long term and do not mind slow progress
9Marsthe household is active and sporty; tempers need watching

Matching the number to the people inside

A house number is read against the birth numbers of the people living there, mainly the adults. If the total is friendly or neutral with most of them, I leave it alone. If it clashes with the earning members, I note it, but I still do not let it decide the house.

The family name on the nameplate carries its own total as well, worked out the way I show on name numerology. Adding digits is also how a registration plate starts, but plates need the owner’s chart and delivery timing, so I treat them separately in car number numerology.

Your flat adds to 4 or 8: what now?

In Bengaluru I am often asked this just before someone pays the token amount. My answer is the same each time: do not drop a well planned flat over its number.

Some numerologists add a letter or a small symbol to the nameplate, so 1102 becomes 1102A and the total moves from 4 to 5. I treat that as a mild, last step, used only after the layout has been checked and sorted.

Number first, or Vastu first?

Vastu first, every time. Where the entrance, kitchen, master bedroom and toilets fall in the 16 zones affects daily life far more than the digits on the door. My Vastu for home guide covers the layout, and if you are still choosing, the flat buying Vastu checklist helps you compare options.

The order I follow before a flat is booked:

  1. Note the facing and which zone the main door falls in.
  2. Check where the kitchen sits.
  3. See whether the master bedroom can be in the south-west.
  4. Make sure no toilet is in the north-east.
  5. Only then add the flat number and compare it with the family’s birth numbers.

Door number, facing and your chart in one reading

The flat number is the smallest of the three things I check in a home. The layout matters more, and the kundli shows which directions are active for you in the current period. When all three point the same way, the advice is simple. When they disagree, the chart tells me what to fix first.

For example, flat 1106 adds to 8, Saturn’s number, in a west-facing flat, for someone about to enter Saturn mahadasha. I would read Saturn in the chart and the west zone together before saying a word about the nameplate. The ₹1,499 home Vastu session is the easy first step; my Astro-Vastu consultation reads the flat and the chart side by side.

If you would like your home checked, my home Vastu session is ₹1,499 for 45 minutes covering one flat or one floor, online or at my Begur studio, and I can add the number and the family’s birth numbers to it. Your written report reaches you within 48 hours. Book it here. For a reading of your chart alone, see my online astrology consultation, and for every number I work with, the numerology overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I count the building number or the flat number?

For an apartment, I count the flat number, because that is your own front door. The building or tower number is shared by everyone living there. For an independent house or villa, use the number on your gate or main door.

Is house number 4 bad in numerology?

No. A 4 is Rahu’s number and often suits people in technology or with unusual working hours. It asks for order and routine. I would only note it if it clashes with the birth numbers of most adults in the home, and even then the layout comes first.

Which house number is best for a family?

Numbers 6, ruled by Venus, and 2, ruled by the Moon, are often called family numbers. Still, the best house number for you is the one that sits comfortably with the birth numbers of the people who actually live there.

Does the house number matter if I am renting?

A little, the same as for an owner, since you live behind that door. In a rented flat I put more effort into simple Vastu changes like bed and desk direction, because those make a bigger difference than the number.

Can I change my house number?

The official number usually cannot be changed. Some people add a letter or a small symbol to the nameplate to shift the total by one. I suggest that only as a mild last step, after the layout has been checked.
