Short answer: Your lucky number by date of birth is your birth number: the day of the month you were born, reduced to one digit. Born on the 25th? 2 + 5 = 7, so 7 is your lucky number. Your destiny number from the full date, and numbers whose planets are friendly to yours, act as supporting numbers.

Step one: find your birth number

Take only the day of the month you were born. Ignore the month and the year for now. If the day is a single digit, that is your birth number. If it has two digits, add them, and add again if the answer still has two digits.

  • Born on the 7th: birth number 7.
  • Born on the 16th: 1 + 6 = 7.
  • Born on the 25th: 2 + 5 = 7.
  • Born on the 31st: 3 + 1 = 4.
  • Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

In Indian numerology this birth number, the moolank, is your main lucky number. It describes your nature, and it is the one I lean on for small daily choices.

Step two: note your destiny number

Your second number comes from the full date. For 25 March 1994, written 25-03-1994, the digits add to 2 + 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 33, and 3 + 3 = 6. I keep this destiny number, the bhagyank, as a second lucky number for longer plans. Its full meaning is on my life path and destiny number page, so I will not repeat it here.

The planet behind your lucky number also rules a direction of the home. A 9 belongs to Mars and the south, a 3 to Jupiter and the north-east, so when someone’s numbers lean hard on one planet, that planet’s part of the house is worth a look too.

Lucky numbers, days and colours for 1 to 9

7Ketu1, 2, 3TuesdayGrey, mixed shades

9Mars1, 2, 3TuesdayRed, coral

How I built this table: the supporting numbers follow the natural friendships between the planets in Jyotish. Rahu and Ketu have no weekday of their own, so I give Rahu’s 4 the day of Saturn, which it behaves like, and Ketu’s 7 the day of Mars. Other books may differ a little for 4 and 7; the rest is widely agreed.

Putting it together: one worked example

Back to 25 March 1994. The birth number is 7, so the supporting numbers are 1, 2 and 3. The destiny number is 6, ruled by Venus, which is neutral towards Ketu’s 7. Tuesday is the day, and grey or mixed shades are the colours.

In practice, if this person is choosing a date in a month to sign papers or start a course, the 7th, 16th and 25th come first, then dates that reduce to 1, 2 or 3, such as the 10th, 11th or 12th. A date adding to 6 is a reasonable second choice. That is all a lucky number really does: it helps you pick between options that are otherwise equal.

Where people use their lucky number

  • Dates: starting a job, signing an agreement, opening an account.
  • Names: checking whether the name you use agrees with your birth number, explained on name numerology.
  • Phone: picking a new SIM whose digits suit you, covered in mobile number numerology.
  • Home: reading the flat or house number, on house number numerology.
  • Small touches: a colour for an interview or a day for a first meeting.

Vehicles are the one place where I do not use the birth number alone, because a plate needs the chart and the delivery timing too; that is why my car number numerology work is a separate report.

What a lucky number cannot do

A lucky number will not change a difficult dasha or make a poor decision a good one. It is a light layer. I find it most useful once the bigger choice has been thought through, when you are deciding which day or which of two numbers to go with.

Your lucky number, its planet and its corner of the house

A lucky number is a small tool for choosing a date or a digit. The kundli shows whether the planet behind it is strong for you this year, and the floor plan shows whether that planet’s direction at home is supported or neglected. Read together, the number stops being a guess and becomes one part of a plan.

Take a birth number 9. Mars rules it, and the south of the home is its zone. If the chart has Mars weak and the south side holds a water feature and wide glass, I would deal with that before worrying about red shirts or Tuesday starts. Frequently Asked Questions

Is my lucky number the same as my birth number?

In the Indian system, yes. Your birth number, taken from the day you were born, is your main lucky number. Your destiny number from the full date comes next, and numbers ruled by planets friendly to yours act as supporting numbers.

What is the lucky number for someone born on the 8th?

The birth number is 8, ruled by Saturn. Supporting numbers are 4, 5 and 6, Saturday is its day and dark blue its colour. Many people fear 8, but for someone born under it, it is simply their own number.

Can I have two lucky numbers?

Yes. Most people carry two: the birth number and the destiny number. When both are the same, that number is very strong for you. When they differ, I use the birth number for daily choices and the destiny number for longer plans.

Does my birth month or year change my lucky number?

Not the birth number, which uses only the day. The month and year come in when you work out the destiny number from the full date. So two people born on the 16th of different months share a birth number but usually not a destiny number.

Which colour is lucky as per date of birth?

Each birth number takes the colour of its planet: gold for 1, white for 2, yellow for 3, grey for 4, green for 5, pastels for 6, mixed shades for 7, dark blue for 8 and red for 9. Use them as small touches, not a full wardrobe change.
