North-West Facing House Vastu: Main Door and Layout

Short answer: north-west facing house Vastu treats this facing as workable, and often good for people whose work keeps them moving. Place the main door towards the north end of the front wall, with the west end as the second choice, and keep it off the exact middle. The kitchen goes on the south-east side at the back, the master bedroom on the south-west side.

The north-west is the zone of air, and the Moon rules it in the planetary map of Vastu. Air moves. That quality is useful for travel, sales and visitors, and unsettling if nothing in the house holds still. Most of my advice for this facing is about getting that balance right.

Reading a house that faces a corner direction

Take a compass reading a step inside the main door, away from metal, looking out. If it sits near 315 degrees, the home faces north-west. For an online session I ask for the reading looking inwards from the entrance, which for this facing comes to about 135 degrees.

A diagonal plot turns the usual picture by 45 degrees. The corners of the land now point to north, east, south and west, and the four sides face the in-between directions. So your whole front faces north-west, the back faces south-east, and the two side walls face north-east and south-west. Once you see the plan this way, every room has an obvious place. The grid I use for this is explained on my 16 Vastu zones page.

Main door placement on a north-west front

I place a door by drawing a line from the centre of the house to the door and reading that line’s direction. Along a north-west front, one end of the wall is the north corner and the other end is the west corner.

Door position on the frontLine from the centre points toMy view
Towards the north endNorthFirst choice. It reads like a good north door; see the north facing house pada table.
Towards the west endWestSecond choice, read with the west padas on the west facing house page.
Dead centreNorth-westAvoid. Traditionally linked with restlessness and money that comes and goes.

If the door is already in the centre, there are two practical routes. Sometimes the opening can shift a few feet within the same frame during an interior job. Otherwise a side door in a better position can become the daily entrance, with the main door kept clean, lit and used for guests. Thresholds and door colours are covered in my main door guide.

Room layout for a north-west facing house

SideFacesRooms that suit it
FrontNorth-westCar porch, guest room, visitor seating, a small client office. The door at its north end.
Right side (standing at the door, looking out)North-eastPooja corner, sump, large windows, open garden strip.
BackSouth-eastKitchen, meter, inverter.
Left side (standing at the door, looking out)South-westMaster bedroom, heavy wardrobes, locker, overhead tank.
CentreNoneOpen and walkable. No toilet, staircase or heavy furniture.

A kitchen at the front, close to the door, is a common builder choice here because the gas line and parking are near the road. On a north-west front this is the second-best kitchen zone, so I usually leave it and work on the details. The kitchen Vastu page covers the stove and sink.

Who a north-west front suits

By tradition, a home facing the zone of air suits people who travel for work, run trading or sales businesses, or host a lot of guests. By the rashi rule, it is Karka’s natural facing because the Moon rules both; my facing by rashi page lists the rest. I use that only as a first look.

The risk is the same quality pushed too far: a house where nobody settles, children who struggle to sit down to study, savings that never build. That is why the south-west side must stay the heaviest and most closed part of the home, with the parents sleeping there.

What to avoid in a north-west facing home

  • A door in the centre of the front, pointing straight at the north-west.
  • The master bedroom on the north-east side because it gets the best light. I move it to the south-west and give the north-east room to children or a study.
  • A washroom on the north-east side wall, where the plumbing stack happens to run. This is a big dosha and the first thing I look at.
  • An open, glass-heavy south-west side.
  • Clutter, old vehicles or scrap in the front porch. Air needs room to move, not junk to sit in.

Check before you buy

  • Your own compass reading at the door. A listing that says north facing can turn out to face north-west, so measure.
  • Room for the door to sit towards the north end of the front.
  • A solid, closed south-west side.
  • No washroom on the north-east side.
  • A complete north-east corner, not cut by the plot shape.

For land, my plot buying checklist covers shape, slope and roads. For a flat, use the flat checklist before paying the token.

A north-west front and a Moon-led chart

The layout rules above hold for any north-west facing house. What varies is how strongly the front’s restless quality shows up, and the chart tells me that. For someone with a Cancer lagna or a long Moon period ahead, the front of this house is their sensitive side. If their door sits in the centre, I give the shift towards the north end top priority and pick the timing from the chart. For another family the same door could wait. That ordering is what an Astro-Vastu consultation gives you. People often tell me they feel a positive shift in about 21 days and clearer results within about 90, but I never promise it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a north-west facing house good for a family that travels a lot?

Traditionally, yes. The north-west is the zone of movement, so it suits people who are often on the road. Keep the south-west heavy so that the home still feels settled when you return.

Can the guest room be at the front of a north-west facing house?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses of that front. Guests come and go, which matches the zone. Avoid making it the couple’s bedroom.

What should go on the north-east side wall of a north-west facing house?

Windows, the pooja corner, the sump and open space. Keep washrooms, staircases and heavy storage away from that side.

Is a north-west facing house good for Karka rashi?

By the traditional rule it is Karka’s own facing, since the Moon rules both. The lagna and the dasha still decide more than the Moon sign.

Does a north-west facing flat need a different remedy at the door?

It depends on which side of the centre the door falls. A door reading north gets the north treatment, one reading west gets the west treatment. A centre door gets a heavy, well-lit threshold and a second entrance for daily use if one exists.

Have your north-west facing plan read

Send me a compass reading taken at the entrance looking inwards, the full layout or a careful hand drawing, and the Google location. On a 45-minute call I take you through the 16 directions and where your door actually falls, and the written report with remedies follows within 48 hours. It costs ₹1,499 for one floor or flat, online or in person in Bangalore. Book the consultation, or see my Vastu consultation in Bangalore page for how I work.
