South-West Facing House Vastu: An Honest View and Practical Fixes

Short answer: south-west facing house Vastu calls this the hardest facing, but it is not a reason to walk away on its own. Keep the main door off the middle of the front wall, towards the west end or the south end, where it lines up with the good padas of the west wall (W3, W4) or the south wall (S3, S4), make the front heavy and closed, keep the back open, and use the front south-west rooms for the master bedroom and storage.

And check the label first. In Bangalore, plenty of flats sold as west facing actually face south-west. If you were told “west” and your compass disagrees, read on.

Why this facing needs the most care

I will be straight with you. Of all eight facings, south-west is the one I approach most carefully. In Vastu the south-west is Nairutya, the zone of earth, weight and the head of the family. It wants to be the heaviest, most closed part of the plot. On a south-west facing plot it becomes the front, the side with the road, the gate and the open setback. The corner that should hold things down is the one left open.

That does not make the house bad. It makes it a house that needs a plan. Rahu is given the south-west in the planetary map, so a family running a Rahu period often feels an open south-west front more than one whose chart is quiet there.

Sold as west facing, actually south-west?

West facing flats are easier to sell than south-west ones, so brochures round the direction off. I find this often enough in Bangalore that I ask every west-facing client for a compass reading before anything else.

Stand a step inside the main door, clear of the steel frame and the meter board, and take three readings looking out. About 260 to 280 degrees is a true west. Near 225 the home faces south-west. In between, around 235 to 255, the door leans west-south-west and I give the south-west side extra weight. For a session, send me the reading taken at the entrance looking inwards; for a south-west door that is roughly 45 degrees. If yours turns out to be a true west, the west facing house guide applies instead.

On this plot the corners point to the main directions. The front faces south-west, the back faces north-east, and the sides face south-east and north-west. Here is the good news hidden in that: the whole back of your house is north-east, so the open, light side you need is already there behind you.

Main door placement

The front wall runs from the south corner to the west corner. Measured by a line from the centre of the house, a door near the west end opens from the west, and one near the south end opens from the south.

  • Near the west end: my first choice. Read it with the good west padas, Sugriva and Pushpadanta.
  • Near the south end: second choice, read with the south padas on the south facing house page.
  • In the middle: the line points straight at the south-west. Traditional texts are most cautious about this position, so this is the door I work hardest on.

The general door rules are on my main door Vastu page.

Room layout: weight in front, light at the back

Everything in a south-west facing home comes back to one idea. Add weight and closure to the front, and lightness to the back.

Part of the houseWhat it should hold
Front, south-west roomsMaster bedroom with solid walls and smaller windows, heavy wardrobes, the locker.
Front boundaryA compound wall a little higher than the back one, dense planting or heavy planters.
Terrace, front sideThe overhead tank.
South-east sideKitchen.
North-west sideGuest room, toilets, utility.
Back, north-eastPooja corner, sump, garden, big windows, light colours.
CentreOpen, with no toilet or staircase.

For the bed and wardrobe inside that front bedroom, see my bedroom Vastu guide. For the overhead tank and sump, the water tank page has the details.

What to avoid

  • A door in the dead centre of the front.
  • Big glass, an open sit-out or a car porch left wide open on the front.
  • An underground sump or borewell in the front south-west. This is the one I correct first.
  • The master bedroom at the back, in the north-east.
  • A cut or missing corner at the back north-east.
  • A washroom on the north-east side, which many Bangalore apartments have. Here it lands on the very side that must stay clean.

Fixes without breaking walls

Most of what this facing needs can be done without a hammer. I always start there and suggest civil work only when nothing else is enough.

IssueWhat I do first
Door in the middle of the frontA side door for daily use; a heavy, well-lit threshold for the main one
Large glass on the frontHeavy curtains or blinds kept mostly closed
Open porch at the frontPlanters and a solid low wall to close it visually
Sump at the frontStop using it if another source exists, keep it sealed, plan a new one at the back
Parents sleeping at the backMove them to the front south-west room

More approaches like these are in Vastu without breaking walls.

With a south-west door, I always start with the kundli. The 11th house matters a lot here, and so does the dasha or mahadasha running for each person in the home, because that decides whether the door will touch them and how. So I read every resident individually and then give remedies to keep the effect as small as possible. A south-west door often does not show much at first, but by the eighth or ninth year it can turn quite adverse. That is why I suggest astro remedies before that stage, so the harder effects can be reduced a great deal.

When I advise against buying

I rarely tell anyone not to buy. I do say it when three things come together: a door in the dead centre of the front that cannot move, an underground sump or borewell in the front south-west, and a cut north-east corner at the back. One of these I can work with. All three, on a property you have not paid for, usually means keep looking. My plot buying checklist covers the rest of what to check on land.

A south-west front and the family’s chart

The fixes above work for the house. They do not tell me who in the family is most exposed to it. When I read the chart of the head of the family next to the plan, I can see whether a Rahu or Ketu period is running, or Rahu sits in the 4th house, and that changes which correction goes first. By the rashi rule, this facing follows Saturn’s friendships, so Makara and Kumbha suit it first; the house facing by rashi page explains why. That ordering is the heart of an Astro-Vastu consultation. Clients often tell me of a positive shift in about 21 days and clearer results within about 90, which I share as experience and not as a promise.

Frequently asked questions

My flat was sold as west facing but the compass reads 225 degrees. What now?

Plan it as a south-west facing flat. Check where the door falls from the centre, keep the front side of the flat heavy, and keep the north-east side clear. A few furniture and colour changes usually go a long way.

Can I live in a rented south-west facing house without worry?

Yes. Rented homes can be eased with changes you can undo later: heavy furniture to the front, closed curtains on the front glass, the couple in the front south-west room and a clean north-east.

Should the overhead tank be at the front of a south-west facing house?

Yes, on the front south-west part of the terrace. It adds the height and weight this facing is short of.

Which rashi suits a south-west facing house?

Traditionally Makara and Kumbha, then Vrishabha and Tula, since Rahu is read like Saturn here. Simha needs more care. The lagna and dasha decide more than the rashi.

Should the front of a south-west facing house have big windows?

Smaller is better on the front. Where large windows already exist, keep heavy curtains drawn for most of the day and put the big, bright openings on the north-east side at the back.
