Short answer: south-east facing house Vastu works in your favour when the fire side is used for fire. Put the kitchen on the front, south-east side, place the main door towards the east end of the front wall rather than its middle, keep the north-east side open, and give the master bedroom the south-west side.

Before anything else, check the label. In Bangalore, builders often sell south-east facing flats as east facing. If your brochure says east but the compass says otherwise, this is the page for you.

Is your “east facing” flat actually south-east?

I see this in apartment after apartment. East facing flats sell faster, so a door that looks out at 130 degrees gets called east. The difference is not cosmetic. A true east home is read with the east wall padas. A south-east home has the fire zone as its whole front, and the kitchen, the door and the sump all need different decisions.

The check takes two minutes. Stand a step inside the main door, away from the steel frame and the meter box, and take three compass readings looking out. Around 80 to 100 degrees is east. Roughly 100 to 125 is east leaning south-east. From about 125 to 145 the home faces south-east. For an online session, take the reading at the entrance looking inwards; a south-east door gives about 315 degrees, and I convert it at my end.

In a flat I read your own front door, not the tower or the balcony.

A house that faces the fire corner

The south-east is Agni’s corner, and in the planetary map it belongs to Venus. People hear “fire” and get anxious. I see it the other way round. Fire cooks food, runs the electricity and keeps a home warm. The only question is whether the front of your house is used for fire, or for water and sleep.

On this plot the corners point to the main directions and the sides face the diagonals. The front faces south-east, the back faces north-west, and the two side walls face north-east and south-west. My 16 zones page shows how I split such a plan.

Main door placement

The front wall runs from the east corner to the south corner. I read the door by the direction of a line drawn from the centre of the house to the door.

Near the east endEastFirst choice. It behaves like a good door on an east facing house.
Near the south endSouth, close to south-eastWorkable with care, following the south wall pada rules on the south facing house page.
Middle of the frontSouth-eastAvoid. Traditionally linked with heated arguments at home.

A door already in the middle can be eased with a well-lit entrance, cooler tones such as cream and light green around the frame, and an east-end side door for daily use where one exists. My main door Vastu page has the general rules on thresholds and lighting.

Room layout: the kitchen belongs in front

This is where a south-east facing home shines. The kitchen zone is your front, so the cooking platform can sit there naturally, with the cook facing east. The gas line, meter and inverter usually end up near the road anyway. Keep the sink and the stove a little apart so fire and water do not sit side by side. The stove, sink and fridge details are on my kitchen Vastu page.

What to avoid in a south-east facing house

  • A sump or borewell dug at the front because the road connection is there. Water in the fire zone is the clash I correct first.
  • The master bedroom at the front, sharing a wall with the kitchen. Fire is a poor neighbour for sleep.
  • Strong red or orange on the facade. The zone is already warm.
  • A store room or staircase on the north-east side, closing the one side that should stay open.
  • A washroom on the north-east side. Many Bangalore flats have one there, and I treat it as a big dosha.

In apartments, a south-east facing flat usually has its balcony on the front. A washing machine and utility area there is fine. A water tank or an aquarium is not.

Quick checks before you sign

  • Compass reading near 135 degrees looking out from the door, whatever the brochure says.
  • Door towards the east end of the front.
  • Kitchen at the front, with no sump beside it.
  • North-east side open and bright.
  • Master bedroom on the south-west side.

Comparing units in a project? My checklist before you book a flat lists the rest.

Venus, Mars and a home facing Agni’s corner

A south-east facing house is the clearest case where the person living in it changes my advice. By the rashi rule it suits Vrishabha and Tula first, because Venus rules the south-east; the facing by rashi page has the full table. A chart that already carries a lot of fire responds to this front differently from a calm one. For an owner running a Mars period with the door in the middle of the front, I would move daily entry to the east end sooner. That kind of ordering is what my Astro-Vastu consultation is for. Clients often feel a positive shift in about 21 days and see clearer results within about 90; I share that as experience, never as a promise.

Frequently asked questions

My builder calls the flat east facing but the compass says 130 degrees. Which is right?

The compass, as long as you took the reading away from metal. At 130 degrees the door faces south-east, and I would plan the kitchen, door and water on that basis.

Is a south-east facing house good for Vrishabha and Tula rashi?

By tradition it is their natural facing, as Venus rules both rashis and the south-east. The lagna and the running dasha still matter more.

Can the living room be at the front of a south-east facing house?

It can, if the kitchen also has a place on the front or on the north-west side. Keep the living room towards the east end and avoid heavy red decor there.

Can the master bedroom share a wall with the kitchen in this facing?

I avoid it, especially with the bed against the kitchen wall. If there is no other option, keep the bed head away from that wall and the stove on the far side.

What colours suit the front of a south-east facing house?

Cream, light pink, soft peach and light green. Keep bright red and orange out of the facade; the zone does not need more heat.
