Short answer: Vastu for a study room puts it in the north-east, east or north of the home, with the child facing east or north while studying. The table sits with a solid wall behind the chair, never under a beam or facing a toilet wall, and heavy bookshelves go on the south or west walls.
Parents usually ask me about the study table in two seasons: a few weeks before board exams, and when a child moves into a new room. Both are good moments, because a study corner is one of the cheapest things in a home to get right. Most of what follows needs no carpenter, only a change of which way the desk faces.
Where the study room should be
The north-east is linked with Jupiter, the planet of learning, and with clear morning light. That makes it the first choice for a study. The east, which takes the sunrise, is next, and the north is a good third. The west suits an older student who needs to sit for long hours of revision, though it is not a first choice for a young child. I avoid a study in the south-west, which suits rest and storage more than learning, and in the south-east, the fire zone, where long hours of concentration come harder.
That Jupiter link works both ways. A child whose chart has a strong Jupiter often settles quickly at a north-east desk, while a child with a weak or troubled Mercury may need extra care with the north side of the room as well.
Most Bengaluru flats have no spare room for a study. That is fine. A desk in the north-east or east part of the child’s bedroom does the same job. If you are not sure where those parts fall, my north-facing, east-facing, south-facing and west-facing house guides show the zone layout, and the full room map is in my home Vastu guide.
Study table checklist
| Point | Do this | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Facing while studying | East first, north second | Facing south |
| Behind the chair | A solid wall | A door, a window or open walkway |
| Above the desk | A clear ceiling | A beam or a loft directly overhead |
| Table shape | Square or rectangle | Round, oval or odd-cut tops |
| Wall in front | Plain wall or a pinboard, kept tidy | A wall shared with a toilet |
| Light | Daylight from the left or front, a lamp for the evening | Glare from a window behind the screen |
| Books | Heavy shelves on the south or west walls | Tall loaded shelves in the north-east |
Leave a hand’s gap between the desk and the wall in front rather than pushing it tight. Keep the surface clear except for what is being studied that day. Old notebooks, broken pens and last year’s guides belong in a cupboard or out of the house.
Small things that make a difference
- The bed: if the desk is in the bedroom, the child should not study sitting on the bed. Bed is for rest; the table is for work.
- Screens: a gaming console or TV in the study zone pulls attention every few minutes. Move it to the living room.
- Mirrors: no mirror reflecting the desk or the books.
- Colours: light green, cream or pale blue on the walls. Strong reds and dark shades are tiring over long hours.
- A picture of Saraswati or a simple lamp in the north-east of the room, if the family follows that practice.
- Fresh air: a window that opens in the north or east helps more than any decoration.
Students working on a laptop for coaching or college need the same rules as an office desk. My home office Vastu guide covers the screen, chair and cables in more detail.
Vasant Panchami: a good day to reset the desk
Vasant Panchami falls on 11 February 2027. It is the day of Saraswati puja and, in many families, the day a child begins learning. With board exams close behind it, I suggest using that day to clear the desk, turn it to face east if it does not already, and set up the corner for the last stretch of revision. A home is easier to change on a festival than in the middle of exam stress.
Reading the child’s chart beside the study corner
A study room session places the desk, the chair and the bookshelf by direction. The chart adds the part a floor plan cannot show: which planet is running the child’s current period, and so which side of the room deserves most of our attention through the exam years.
For a student in a Moon antardasha, when focus can drift under pressure, I look closely at the north-west of the room, the Moon’s zone, and keep it tidy and calm rather than stacked with bags and old files. Book the ₹1,499 home Vastu session if the desk is all you need right now. If you want the child’s chart and the room looked at in one sitting, my Astro-Vastu session for families is the fuller choice.
When the chart matters too
A good desk helps any child, but it cannot choose a stream or explain why one subject is hard. That is where the birth chart comes in; I cover it in my page on education astrology. For the study room itself, I read the plan in a 45-minute session for ₹1,499 per flat or per floor, online or at my Begur studio, with written notes in 48 hours. Frequently Asked Questions
Which direction should a student face while studying?
East is the first choice, because it takes the morning light, and north is a good second. Facing south while studying is the one direction I ask families to change. If the room makes east or north impossible, west is acceptable for older students preparing for long exams.
Can the study table be in the bedroom?
Yes, and in most flats it has to be. Place it in the north-east, east or north part of the bedroom, facing east or north, with the bed and the desk clearly separate. Keep the desk tidy, and avoid studying in bed.
Where should the bookshelf be placed in a study room?
Heavy, full bookshelves go on the south or west walls. A small open shelf with the books in use right now can sit near the desk. Avoid tall, loaded shelves in the north-east of the room, which should stay light and open.
Is it good to keep the study table facing a window?
A window in front on the east or north is fine and gives good light. A window behind the chair is not, because the back has no support and the glare falls on the screen. If the only spot has a window behind, keep a heavy curtain closed while studying.
What if two children share one study table?
Place them side by side, both facing east or north, rather than facing each other across the table. Give each one a clear half of the surface and a separate shelf. Sitting across from each other tends to turn study time into conversation.
