Short answer: For work from home, Vastu asks you to face north or east at your desk, with a solid wall behind you. The best places for a home office are the north, north-east and east of the home. Keep heavy storage on the south or west side and the bed out of view.
Some working days at home feel sharp. Others feel like wading through fog, with the same laptop, the same chair and the same hours. Vastu has a simple explanation for part of that difference: the direction you sit in and the zone of the home you work from either help your attention or keep pulling at it.
A desk at home is not the same as a desk in an office. At home it is often a corner of the bedroom, the end of the dining table or a spare room that is also the guest room. The good news is that most work-from-home corrections cost nothing and need no demolition: a turned desk, a moved shelf, better light.
Which way to face while you work
North and east are the directions I recommend most. The north is ruled by Mercury and linked with trade, communication and money coming in, so it suits sales, finance, consulting and anyone who spends the day on calls. The east is ruled by the Sun and supports clarity and a sense of authority, which helps leaders, writers and anyone making decisions. The north-east is good for research, study and creative work, because it is the calm, open corner of the home.
A small metal tortoise on the north side of the desk fits the same idea; see tortoise on a work desk.
This is also why the same desk direction does not suit everyone equally. Mercury and the Sun sit differently in each birth chart, so one person settles quickly facing north while another simply works better facing east.
Facing south or west for long hours is the arrangement I try to change first. People who sit that way often tell me they feel heavy or flat by mid-afternoon. If a wall forces you to face south today, try turning the desk; even a quarter turn towards the east usually helps.
Where in the home to put your work corner
| Zone of the home | As a work spot | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| North | Very good | Keep it uncluttered; it suits calls and client work |
| North-east | Very good for focused work | No heavy shelves or cartons here |
| East | Good | Morning glare on the screen; use a blind |
| South-east | Fine for short, active work | Can feel restless over long days |
| South | Workable | Needs bright light and a north or east facing |
| West | Good for steady, disciplined work | Face east, not west |
| South-west | Better kept for rest | Feels heavy for daily desk work |
| Centre | Avoid | Keep the Brahmasthan open |
The south-west is the zone of rest and stability, which is why it suits the master bedroom and not the laptop. The centre of the home should stay open, so a desk in the middle of the living room is the one setup I always move.
A desk in a flat bedroom
Most of the work-from-home questions I get come from people in two- and three-bedroom flats where the only spare space is a bedroom corner. That can work well. Put the desk so you face north or east, with a solid wall behind your chair rather than the door or a window. Do not face the bed while you work; it blurs the line between work and rest. A low shelf, a curtain or even a tall plant between the desk and the bed helps more than people expect.
For compact tech-park flats, see how I place the desk on my Electronic City Vastu consultant page.
If the room only allows you to sit with your back to the door, place a small mirror on the desk or the wall so you can see the entrance. It is a workaround, not the ideal, and moving the desk is always better.
Your video-call background
Your camera faces the wall behind you, so that wall is the one colleagues see every day. Vastu and good sense agree here: a solid wall behind you is better than an open door or a window. Keep the bed, the laundry and storage out of the frame. A plain light wall, a bookshelf or a single healthy plant makes a calm background. Light should fall on your face from the front or the left, not from behind, which also happens to look better on screen.
A 7 horses painting on that wall is fine in a work corner, though you will not see it yourself; my 7 horses painting for a home office page explains the trade-off.
Seven-point work-from-home desk checklist
- You face north or east while working.
- A solid wall is behind your chair.
- Natural light comes from the front or the left.
- Files, printer and heavy storage are on the south or west side of the room.
- The north-east corner of the room is clear of cables and cartons.
- The bed is out of your line of sight and out of the camera frame.
- A small plant sits in the east or north-east; no cactus or thorny plants on the desk.
Three desk problems I keep finding in flats
A beam over the chair. Many flats here have a heavy beam running across the bedroom, and the desk often ends up right under it. Sitting below a beam for eight hours a day is the first thing I ask people to change. Slide the desk a couple of feet so the beam is not above your head. If the room won’t allow that, a false ceiling panel under the beam is a simple fix.
A desk facing the toilet wall. When the only spare wall is shared with a toilet, don’t sit looking at it. Turn the desk so that wall is at your side, and keep the toilet door shut during work hours.
A desk on the balcony. A covered balcony on the north or east side works well for a few hours a day. Put a solid board or a tall potted plant behind your chair so your back isn’t open to the road, and keep the laptop out of direct afternoon sun.
If your flat throws up two of these at once, it is usually quicker to look at the whole plan than to fix the desk alone. That is what my online home Vastu consultation does, from your floor plan.
When you cannot change the layout
Many people work from rented flats where the furniture has only one sensible place. Vastu corrections are about the elements more than the architecture. If you cannot face north, a painting of flowing water on the north wall brings in the water element. If your only spare room is in the south-west, brighten it with good lighting and a lively yellow or light green on the east wall. A bamboo plant in the east of the room, or a money plant in its south-east, adds living green; my money plant guide covers where it does well.
If the desk is for a child rather than a working parent, the priorities change, and my page on study room Vastu deals with that. For a full office outside the home, see Vastu for office. And because the facing of the flat decides where the light comes in, the guides for an east-facing house and a west-facing house are worth a look; in a west-facing home, plan for afternoon glare on the screen. The rest of the home is covered in my Vastu for home guide.
Your desk direction and the period you are running
A home office check tells you the best spot by the rules of the house. Reading your birth chart with it tells me which of those good spots suits you, now. Freelancers and business owners feel this most, because their income moves with their own periods, not a company’s.
Someone running Saturn mahadasha, for example, often does steady, solitary work better from the west zone of the home, facing east, while a person in a strong Mercury period may do better at a north wall where the calls and the money flow. When I see the chart and the plan together, the desk goes where both agree. You can read how I do that in my Astro-Vastu consultation; for most people the home Vastu session is a sound place to begin.
If you would like your own workspace checked, a 45-minute home Vastu session is ₹1,499 for one floor or one flat. We can do it online from your floor plan or at my Begur studio, and you get a written plan for the desk, the room and the rest of the home within 48 hours. If you are in Bengaluru, my Vastu consultation in Bangalore page explains the local options, or you can book directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it bad to work from the bed?
For an hour now and then, it does no harm. As a daily habit it mixes the place of rest with the place of work, and most people find both suffer. Even a small folding desk facing north or east in the same room is a better arrangement.
What colour should a home office wall be?
Light, calm shades work best: off-white, cream, light green or a soft blue on the north side. Avoid dark grey or black behind the screen. If you face east, a light yellow on that wall keeps the room bright without strain.
Is a desk facing a window good Vastu?
A window in front of you, on the north or east, is good, as long as the glare does not hit the screen. Use a sheer curtain or blind in the morning. A window behind your back is the arrangement to avoid, because it leaves you without support and puts glare on your camera.
Two of us work from home. Can we share one room?
Yes. Put both desks so each person faces north or east, ideally not face to face. The person who spends most time on calls takes the north side. Shared storage goes along the south or west wall.
Does the direction of the laptop itself matter?
What matters is the direction you face, and the laptop simply follows that. Keep the charger and cables tidy and off the floor in the north-east, and do not let the desk become a store for papers you have finished with.
Can I keep my work desk under a beam?
I’d avoid it. Move the chair so the beam is not directly over your head. If that isn’t possible in your room, a false ceiling panel below the beam is an easy way around it.
Is it fine to work from the balcony?
A covered north or east balcony is fine for part of the day. Keep something solid behind your chair and shade the screen from the afternoon sun.
