Ketu Mahadasha: Seven Years of Letting Go and Turning Inward

Short answer: Ketu mahadasha lasts 7 years. Ketu is the south lunar node, so it tends to reduce interest in whatever its house rules: status, home, relationships or money. People often feel detached, drawn to spiritual practice, or ready for a career change. Its results depend on Ketu’s house, its sign lord and the planets with it.

Seven years that often look quiet from outside

Ketu mahadasha lasts just seven years, far shorter than Rahu’s eighteen, and people tend to describe it in the same few words: distant, inward, unsure what they want any more. That is a fair picture of how it feels, but not of what it does. Ketu is the south node, the tail end of the Rahu and Ketu axis. Where Rahu wants more, Ketu lets go. The dasha removes interest from things you have outgrown, and that can look like loss before it looks like clarity.

It arrives after seventeen years of Mercury and hands over to twenty years of Venus. If your Moon is in Ashwini, Magha or Mula, your life began in Ketu mahadasha. Because Ketu and Rahu always sit opposite each other, I read this period next to the eighteen years of Rahu: the house Ketu empties is often the one Rahu filled.

Ketu’s quiet tends to reach the home as well. Many people in this period want one corner of the house kept bare and silent, and which corner that is depends on where Rahu and Ketu fall in their own chart.

Where Ketu sits decides the story

The house holding Ketu tells me which part of life goes quiet. Here is how I usually start reading it, before checking the sign lord and any planets joined to Ketu.

Ketu inWhat often goes quietWhat often grows
1st houseConcern about image and approvalSelf-reliance and a quieter sense of self
2nd houseFamily closeness, steady savingsPlain, sometimes blunt speech
3rd houseThe urge to promote yourselfFocused writing, short purposeful trips
4th houseFeeling settled at homeMoves, distance from home town or mother
5th houseInterest in romance and speculationMantra, research, deep study
6th houseRivals and old debts fadeService work, healing professions
7th houseCloseness in marriage or partnershipNeed for clear terms with partners
8th houseFear of the unknownOccult or research interest
9th houseInherited beliefs, old gurusPilgrimage and a personal faith
10th houseHunger for title and statusA change of field towards meaning
11th houseLarge friend circlesIrregular but real gains
12th houseAttachment to place and possessionsMeditation, retreat, time abroad

Ketu in the 12th is a placement I get asked about so often that I have written it up separately as Ketu in the 12th house.

Career shifts during Ketu

The most common Ketu story in my practice is the person who worked hard for a role for ten years and then, in Ketu mahadasha, stops caring about it. Some resign. Some move into teaching, research, healing, coding alone, or something technical where results speak for themselves. Ketu tends to favour depth over display.

My advice is not to resign in the first weeks. The opening sub-period, Ketu / Ketu, lasts only 4 months and 27 days, and it is the most disorienting part. Test the new direction alongside your current work first. The longest sub-period is Ketu / Venus at 1 year 2 months, and it often brings comfort, a relationship or a creative turn back into the picture. Ketu / Rahu (1 year 0 months 18 days) and Ketu / Saturn (1 year 1 month 9 days) are the ones where decisions get made. The full sequence and its arithmetic are on my guide to reading your dashas.

For the wider question of which field suits you, the 10th house and its lord still lead. My career astrology guide explains how I read them.

The spiritual pull, kept practical

Ketu is called the moksha karaka, the significator of release. Many people feel drawn to meditation, temples, scripture or long silences in these years, even those who never had such interests. I think that pull is worth following. It is also worth keeping your feet on the ground while you follow it: a person who gives away savings or walks out on family duties in Ketu mahadasha often regrets it when Venus begins.

A short checklist for the seven years

  • Notice what you have stopped wanting. Write it down; it is information, not failure.
  • Before a big exit (job, city, relationship), wait until you are out of the first sub-period.
  • Keep one daily practice that grounds you: breath, a mantra you already know, a walk.
  • Keep your daily routine steady: regular sleep, meals and exercise.
  • Keep in touch with two or three people, even if you prefer solitude now.
  • Plan for Venus mahadasha: the next twenty years tend to bring life back outward.

None of this needs a puja, a stone or a special ritual. Cat’s eye is often suggested for Ketu, and I recommend it only rarely, after checking the chart carefully, because it is one of the most unpredictable stones.

Ketu mahadasha, your chart and the rooms you live in

A Ketu reading tells you which part of life is going quiet. What it cannot show is how your home sits with that change. Ketu has no zone of its own in the plan I use, so I follow its partner. Rahu, always opposite Ketu, is linked with the south-west, the corner that holds the master bedroom and the heaviest furniture. If Rahu sits in your 4th or 10th house and the south-west of your flat is cut or holds a toilet, the restless side of this axis tends to feel louder through these seven years.

The ₹1,499 dasha reading is a good place to start. If you want the house checked against the same chart, with remedies timed to Ketu’s sub-periods, my Astro-Vastu consultation covers both in one sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ketu mahadasha bad?

It is uncomfortable for many people, but not bad as a rule. It takes attention away from what you have outgrown. With Ketu in the 3rd, 6th, 11th or 12th, people often find these seven years useful for study, inner work or quietly beating difficult competition.

Which mahadasha comes after Ketu?

Venus mahadasha, which runs for twenty years. The change is often noticeable: interest in people, comfort, creativity and relationships returns, sometimes within the first few months. Before Ketu comes Mercury mahadasha of seventeen years.

Can Ketu mahadasha cause job loss?

It can coincide with leaving a job, more often by choice than by force. Ketu removes the drive for status, so people change field or step back. Whether income suffers depends on the 10th and 11th houses and the sub-period running.

Does Ketu mahadasha make you spiritual?

It often brings a strong pull towards meditation, pilgrimage or study of scripture, especially with Ketu in the 9th or 12th or joined by Jupiter. Following that pull is healthy. Leaving all responsibilities behind for it usually is not.
