Short answer: Dasha analysis is reading which planet’s period you are running and what it is likely to bring. In the Vimshottari system, used by most Indian astrologers, nine planets rule periods that add up to 120 years. Your sequence starts from your Moon’s nakshatra at birth, so an accurate birth time matters a lot.
Why timing comes before prediction
A birth chart shows what is possible in your life. The dasha shows when. Two people with similar charts can have very different decades simply because they run different planetary periods. That is why, in every reading, I look at the dasha before I say anything about a career move, a marriage or a property purchase.
The system almost every Indian astrologer uses is Vimshottari dasha. It gives each of the nine planets a fixed number of years, in a fixed order, and the cycle adds up to 120 years. Nobody lives through all of it; you start somewhere inside the cycle, depending on where your Moon was at birth.
The nine mahadashas, their years and their birth stars
| Planet | Years | Starts first if your Moon is in | My page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 | Ashwini, Magha, Mula | Ketu mahadasha |
| Venus | 20 | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha | Venus mahadasha |
| Sun | 6 | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha | Below |
| Moon | 10 | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana | Below |
| Mars | 7 | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta | Below |
| Rahu | 18 | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha | Rahu mahadasha |
| Jupiter | 16 | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada | Jupiter mahadasha |
| Saturn | 19 | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada | Saturn mahadasha |
| Mercury | 17 | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati | Below |
The order never changes. After Mercury the cycle returns to Ketu. So if you were born in Moon dasha, Mars comes next, then Rahu, then Jupiter, and so on down the table. More on the 27 birth stars is on my nakshatra page.
Each dasha lord also has a direction in the home: Saturn the west, Venus the south-east, Jupiter the north-east. When a person changes mahadasha, the part of the house tied to the new lord often starts to matter more.
How your starting point is worked out
Each nakshatra covers 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac. How far your Moon had already travelled through its nakshatra at birth decides how much of the first dasha was used up before you were born. If your Moon sat halfway through Rohini, for example, about five of the Moon’s ten years were left.
This is where birth time matters. The Moon moves roughly half a degree an hour, so a two-hour error moves it about one degree. In a twenty-year Venus dasha, one degree can shift every later date by around a year and a half. If you are not sure of your time, tell me; I will say how far the dates can be trusted.
Three layers: mahadasha, antardasha, pratyantar
A mahadasha is the main period. Inside it run nine antardashas, or sub-periods, starting with the lord’s own and then following the same order as the table. Inside each antardasha run smaller pratyantar dashas, lasting weeks or months. The mahadasha sets the theme of the years, the antardasha decides which part of that theme is active now, and the pratyantar helps with timing an event to the month.
Each mahadasha in plain words
- Sun, 6 years: authority, father, government work and recognition; ego clashes if the Sun is weak
- Moon, 10 years: mind, mother, home and public dealings; moods rise and fall with the Moon’s strength
- Mars, 7 years: drive, property, siblings, technical work and courage; quarrels if Mars is troubled
- Mercury, 17 years: study, trade, writing, numbers and communication; good for business and skills
- Rahu, 18 years: ambition, foreign links and sudden change; read it in detail on my Rahu page
- Jupiter, 16 years: growth, children, teachers and respected wealth
- Saturn, 19 years: slow building, hard work and lasting results
- Ketu, 7 years: detachment, spiritual pull and sudden endings
- Venus, 20 years: relationships, comfort, arts, vehicles and luxury
What I check in a dasha reading
- The houses the dasha lord owns and occupies, counted from the Lagna and from the Moon
- Its sign: exalted, own, friendly, enemy or debilitated
- The nakshatra it sits in, and that nakshatra’s lord
- Planets joining or aspecting it
- Its strength in the navamsa chart
- Saturn and Jupiter transits over the same houses, like Saturn in Aries from 3 June 2027 (see Saturn transit 2027)
- Dasha sandhi, the months where one mahadasha hands over to the next
Most of my clients come with a question about marriage or work. How the dasha fits into those is on my marriage timing and career astrology pages.
Your running dasha and the corner of the home that carries it
A dasha reading tells you which planet is in charge of these years. What it does not show is whether the part of your home that belongs to that planet is helping it or working against it. When I read the dasha and the floor plan together, the remedies become timed and specific: which zone to fix first, and in which antardasha.
Someone entering Venus mahadasha often asks about marriage, a house or comfort. Venus belongs to the south-east, which in many flats is the kitchen. If that zone is cramped or holds a toilet, I would look at it before suggesting anything else. The ₹1,499 dasha reading is the simple start; for the full picture, book my Astro-Vastu consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which mahadasha I am running?
From your date, time and place of birth. Any good kundli software lists the Vimshottari dasha dates, starting from the nakshatra of your Moon. If your birth time is uncertain, the dates can be off by months or more, which is why I check the timeline against events in your life.
Which mahadasha is the longest?
Venus, at 20 years. Saturn follows with 19, Rahu 18, Mercury 17 and Jupiter 16. The shortest is the Sun at 6 years, with Ketu and Mars at 7 each and the Moon at 10. Together they make the 120-year Vimshottari cycle.
Is a bad mahadasha bad for all its years?
No. A difficult mahadasha still has better and harder sub-periods, depending on the antardasha lord. A planet that is weak by sign may also be well placed by house or helped by aspects. I always read the whole period before calling it good or bad.
What is dasha sandhi?
It is the junction where one mahadasha ends and the next begins, usually taken as a few months on either side. People often feel unsettled then, as the old theme fades and the new one has not yet taken hold. It is a time to avoid hasty, irreversible decisions.
Can remedies change my dasha?
No remedy changes the dasha itself; the timeline is fixed by your birth. What remedies can do is help you use the period better: routines, chanting, charity, and changes at home that suit the dasha lord. I do not sell gemstones, yantras or pujas.
