Short answer: Rahu mahadasha lasts 18 years in the Vimshottari system. Rahu has no sign of its own, so it gives the results of the sign it sits in, that sign’s lord and the planets with it. It often brings ambition, foreign links and sudden change. It tends to do well in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses.

What eighteen years of Rahu actually feel like

Rahu mahadasha is the period people message me about most, and usually right after reading something frightening online. So let me begin with what I see in real charts. Rahu has no sign of its own. It is the north node of the Moon, the point where the paths of the Sun and the Moon cross, and during its dasha it gives the results of the sign it occupies, the lord of that sign, and the planets sitting with it. Two people in Rahu mahadasha can therefore live very different eighteen years.

What Rahu does bring in almost every chart is appetite. It wants more of whatever its house stands for, and it wants it fast. That opens doors: foreign work, technology, unusual careers, people from outside your usual circle. It also brings restlessness, overreach and choices made on half the facts. The period tends to reward people who use that hunger with a plan, and to punish shortcuts.

Most Vastu texts give Rahu the south-west, the corner meant to stay heavy and steady. In my reading that matters during these years, because an open or cut south-west tends to add to the very restlessness this period already brings.

Who runs it, and when

Your dasha sequence starts from the nakshatra of your Moon at birth. If your Moon is in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha, you were born inside Rahu mahadasha, with part of it already spent. Everyone else meets it after the seven years of Mars, and it hands over to sixteen years of Jupiter. Since the full Vimshottari cycle is 120 years, some people never reach it in this life. How the starting balance is worked out from your birth time is covered on my dasha analysis page.

The nine sub-periods, with their real lengths

Every mahadasha splits into nine antardashas. The first belongs to the dasha lord itself, and the rest follow the fixed Vimshottari order. Each length is 18 years multiplied by the sub-lord’s own years, divided by 120. Months below are counted as 30 days, the way dasha software counts them.

AntardashaLengthWhat I watch in this stretch
Rahu / Rahu2 y 8 m 12 dThe new hunger settles in; first big change of direction
Rahu / Jupiter2 y 4 m 24 dOften the steadiest part; advisers, teachers, children
Rahu / Saturn2 y 10 m 6 dHeavy workload, delays, property or legal paperwork
Rahu / Mercury2 y 6 m 18 dTrade, tech, writing, contracts; read the fine print
Rahu / Ketu1 y 0 m 18 dPulled between wanting and letting go; routine health checks
Rahu / Venus3 y 0 m 0 dThe longest sub-period; relationships, comforts, spending
Rahu / Sun10 m 24 dFriction with bosses, father or government offices
Rahu / Moon1 y 6 m 0 dMood, mother, home life; sleep and worry
Rahu / Mars1 y 0 m 18 dBold moves, land, siblings; handover to Jupiter

The lengths add up to exactly 18 years. What the table cannot show is the column that matters most: each sub-lord acts through its own house in your chart. Rahu / Venus with Venus ruling your 7th is a very different three years from Rahu / Venus with Venus sitting in the 12th.

What it often brings, by the house Rahu sits in

  • 1st house: a new image, strong ambition, a restless body. People start seeing you as unconventional.
  • 2nd and 8th: family money, speech, sudden gains and sudden costs, research, inheritance questions. Clean paperwork matters here.
  • 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th: the houses where Rahu usually does well. Courage, an edge over competitors, career jumps, wide networks and rising income. The career side is detailed in Rahu in the 10th house.
  • 4th: house moves, buying property, unease at home; time with your mother counts for more.
  • 5th: speculation, unusual studies, questions about children. Avoid trading on tips.
  • 7th: partnerships and marriage outside the expected pattern, which I discuss in Rahu in the 7th house.
  • 9th: questioning old beliefs and gurus, long-distance travel, distance from father.
  • 12th: foreign stays, rising expenses, broken sleep, a pull towards retreat.

Treat these as starting points rather than verdicts. The lord of Rahu’s sign, a glance from Jupiter or Saturn, and Rahu’s place in the Navamsa can all change the picture.

The worries I hear, and my honest answers

“Rahu mahadasha is bad.” Not as a rule. Plenty of people build their careers during these years, especially with Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th. What I do see often is a gap between what Rahu promises and what is real. So the first task is telling a genuine opening apart from a shiny one.

“Everything will happen suddenly.” Some things will: an offer from abroad, a shift in a relationship, an unplanned bill. Sudden is not the same as bad. It simply means your buffers count for more: savings, documents in order, and one or two people you trust to question you.

There is also a transit layer coming. On 5 December 2026 Rahu moves into Capricorn and Ketu into Cancer, so anyone running Rahu mahadasha will feel natal Rahu and moving Rahu at the same time. What that shift touches for each Moon sign is on my Rahu and Ketu transit page.

Practical remedies that need no purchase

  • Keep a fixed sleep time. Rahu restlessness shows up in sleep before anywhere else.
  • Write down every big decision and wait 48 hours before you sign.
  • Cut back on alcohol and late-night screens; both feed the restlessness.
  • Keep money clean: no cash deal you could not explain on paper.
  • Hold one steady daily practice, a mantra, a walk, or the prayer you already follow.
  • Give time or money to a cause within your means, without expecting anything back.

I do not ask people to wear hessonite (gomed) just because Rahu is running. A stone strengthens a planet, and strengthening a badly placed Rahu can make its noise louder. Whatever I suggest comes from your chart, not from the name of the dasha.

Steadying Rahu Mahadasha from the south-west

Sub-periods and house placements tell you what Rahu wants. The home tells me what is holding you steady while it pushes. Someone in Rahu / Venus with Venus in the 12th, living in a flat where the south-west is a balcony or a toilet, would hear from me about the bed, the locker and heavy storage in that corner first, and I would never send them to buy a stone for it.

Mapping your eighteen years is what the ₹1,499 reading does. If you want those years planned with your bedroom, your desk and your entrance in view as well, the Astro-Vastu consultation for a Rahu period is the fuller step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Rahu mahadasha?

Eighteen years in the Vimshottari system. If your Moon was in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha at birth, you were born in it and only the balance remains. Your exact start and end dates come from your birth time, so a few minutes of error can shift them by weeks.

Which antardasha of Rahu mahadasha is the hardest?

There is no single answer for everyone. Rahu / Saturn and Rahu / Ketu are the ones people most often find heavy, but if Saturn rules good houses in your chart, Rahu / Saturn can be a period of solid work and promotion. The sub-lord’s house decides it.

Is Rahu mahadasha good for going abroad?

It is one of the periods most often linked with foreign travel and work, especially when Rahu connects to the 9th or 12th house. A chart still needs the 4th house and the running sub-period to support a move before I would call it likely.

What happens when Rahu mahadasha ends?

Jupiter mahadasha begins and runs for sixteen years. Many people describe the change as things slowing down and making more sense. The last sub-period, Rahu / Mars, is often busy, so do not judge Jupiter by its first few weeks.

Should I wear gomed in Rahu mahadasha?

Not by default. Hessonite strengthens Rahu, which helps only if Rahu is well placed and works for your Lagna. For many charts I suggest simple habits or a mantra instead. I decide this from your chart on the call.
