Life Path Number and Destiny Number: How to Work Them Out

Illustration: Life Path Number and Destiny Number: How to Work Them Out

Short answer: Your life path number is the total of your full date of birth, reduced to a single digit. In Indian numerology the same number is called the destiny number, or bhagyank. Example: 14 August 1987 gives 1+4+0+8+1+9+8+7 = 38, then 3+8 = 11, then 1+1 = 2. So the life path number is 2.

First, clear up the names

These two terms cause more confusion than any other part of numerology, because different books use them differently.

  • Life path number is the Western name for the total of your full date of birth.
  • Destiny number (bhagyank) is what Indian numerology calls that same total. This is how I use it, and how most Indian numerologists do.
  • Birth number (moolank) is only the day of the month you were born, reduced to one digit.
  • Some Western books use “destiny number” for the total of your name instead. In my practice, that is the name number, and I work it out with Chaldean letter values on name numerology.

So if one website says your destiny number is 6 and another says 2, check which method each is using before you worry.

Working it out by hand: example one

Take a date of birth of 14 August 1987, written as 14-08-1987.

  • Add every digit: 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 38.
  • Reduce: 3 + 8 = 11.
  • Reduce again: 1 + 1 = 2.
  • Life path, or destiny, number: 2.
  • Birth number: the day is 14, so 1 + 4 = 5.

A quick way to check your work: reduce the day, month and year separately and then add. Day 14 gives 5, month 08 gives 8, year 1987 gives 25 and then 7. Now 5 + 8 + 7 = 20, and 2 + 0 = 2. Same answer.

Example two

Now take 29 November 2001, written as 29-11-2001.

  • Add every digit: 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 1 = 16.
  • Reduce: 1 + 6 = 7.
  • Life path, or destiny, number: 7.
  • Birth number: 29 gives 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

Here the person has a birth number of 2, ruled by the Moon, and a destiny number of 7, ruled by Ketu. Day to day they may come across as gentle and caring, while life keeps steering them towards study, research or inner work.

Each planet behind a number also has a direction in Vastu. The Moon, behind birth number 2, rules the north-west, the zone of movement and change, which is one reason I look at the house when someone’s numbers and life seem at odds.

A note on 11, 22 and 33

Western numerology keeps 11, 22 and 33 as “master numbers” and does not reduce them. The Indian system I follow reduces every total to a single digit from 1 to 9, because each digit belongs to one of the nine planets. I mention the master numbers only so the difference does not confuse you when you compare websites.

A name number example

For completeness, here is how the name total works with Chaldean values, where letters run from 1 to 8 and no letter is given 9. The name RAVI: R = 2, A = 1, V = 6, I = 1. That makes 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. I always use the name a person actually signs and goes by, not only the one on a certificate.

What each number means, in brief

NumberPlanetIn one line
1SunLeadership, independence, the urge to start things
2MoonSensitivity, care, partnership, a changing mood
3JupiterWisdom, teaching, growth, a sense of right
4RahuUnconventional thinking, sudden changes, technology
5MercuryCommunication, trade, quick learning, variety
6VenusLove, beauty, comfort, family and the arts
7KetuDepth, research, intuition, some detachment
8SaturnDiscipline, patience, slow but lasting success
9MarsCourage, drive, protection, a fighting spirit

I have written fuller pages on number 1, the Sun’s number, number 7 and Ketu and number 8 and Saturn, since these are the ones people ask me about most. More are on the way.

How I use these numbers

The birth number shows your temperament. The destiny number shows the direction life keeps moving you in. The name number is the one you can adjust. When all three get on with each other, things tend to feel easier. When they clash, a small spelling change in the name you use is often the simplest fix. For the year ahead, your personal year number adds timing, which I explain on numerology 2027. If you would rather not count by hand, the birth date number calculator does it for you.

The same two numbers are what I compare a registration plate against in car number numerology, so keep them handy when you buy a vehicle.

From your life path number to the rooms you live in

Working out your numbers is the first layer, and your kundli adds the planets behind them. A look at your home adds a third: the directions those same planets rule. When the birth number, destiny number and chart all point to one planet, that planet’s zone in your house deserves attention.

Take a destiny number 3 with Jupiter strong in the chart. Jupiter rules the north-east, so I would check that corner for toilets, heavy storage or clutter, and keep it open and lit where possible. The ₹1,499 reading of numbers with your kundli is the easy start. For the chart and the home studied side by side, book my Astro-Vastu consultation.

Your numbers, read with your chart

Numbers are one layer. I read them alongside your kundli on a 45-minute call for ₹1,499, online or at my Begur studio, and send written suggestions within 48 hours. The full system is on my numerology page. Book a consultation, or read about my online astrology sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the life path number the same as the destiny number?

In Indian numerology, yes: both mean the total of your full date of birth. Some Western books use “destiny number” for the total of your name instead. Check which method a source uses before comparing results.

Which is more important, the birth number or the destiny number?

Both matter in different ways. The birth number describes your nature and daily behaviour, and is usually felt more strongly in youth. The destiny number describes the direction of life and often becomes clearer with age.

Should I reduce 11 and 22 in my life path number?

In the Indian system I follow, yes. Every total is reduced to one digit from 1 to 9, because each digit is ruled by one of the nine planets. Western numerology keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers.

Can I change my life path number?

No, it comes from your date of birth. What you can adjust is the spelling of the name you use, so its number sits well with your birth and destiny numbers. This is the usual remedy in numerology.

What if my birth number and destiny number are the same?

Then that planet’s qualities are very strong in you, for better and for worse. A double 1 is very independent; a double 8 very patient and serious. I check that the name number does not push the same note further.
