Short answer: Place the dressing table against the north or east wall of the bedroom, so you face north or east while getting ready. Keep its mirror out of the line of the bed, or cover it at night. Leave the south-west corner to the bed and heavy wardrobes, and keep the table top tidy and well lit.
Which wall, and which way you face
A dressing table is two things at once: a piece of furniture and a mirror. The furniture is light, so it suits the north or east side of the bedroom, and when it stands on those walls you face north or east while you sit at it. Those are the two directions I prefer for any daily routine done in front of a mirror. The heavier south and west walls are better left to the bed and the wardrobe. The mirror itself has its own rules, which I cover in mirror Vastu.
There is also a planet behind this furniture. Venus governs beauty, grooming and comfort, so for a person whose Venus is weak or running its dasha, where they get ready each morning deserves a little more thought.
Matching the dressing table to your bed
The bed is placed first. The dresser then goes where its mirror cannot catch the bed. This is how I usually work it out:
| Bed head against the | Put the dressing table on the | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| South wall | East wall, beside the window | The north wall faces the foot of the bed; use it only off to one side |
| East wall | North wall, near a corner | Keep it out of the bed’s direct line |
| West wall | North or east wall, at one end | The east wall faces the foot of the bed; shift it sideways |
| Small room, no spare wall | A wall-mounted mirror cabinet on the north or east wall | Fold-down or sliding cover for night |
How the bed itself should be placed is on my page on bed position as per Vastu.
Small flats and built-in vanities
Many Bangalore flats leave no room for a separate dresser in the second bedroom. Builders often fit a mirror and a ledge into the wardrobe instead, on the south or west wall. That is acceptable if the mirror sits inside a door, so it only shows when you open it. If the mirror is fixed on the outside facing the bed, hang a fabric panel over it at night, or move your grooming to a small mirror on the north or east wall.
A walk-in dressing area between the bedroom and the toilet is another common layout. There the dresser can go on any north or east wall of that passage, and the bed is no longer a concern, because the mirror cannot see it.
A dressing table checklist
- Against the north or east wall of the room.
- Mirror outside the bed’s line, or covered at night.
- Light falls on your face from both sides, not from behind you. Morning daylight from the east is ideal.
- Table top kept clear; daily items only, the rest in drawers.
- Expired creams, dried bottles and broken combs thrown out every month.
- A proper stool or chair, so you sit facing the mirror rather than leaning in.
- Not placed in the south-west corner, and not blocking the door’s swing.
Where it does not belong
The south-west corner, which the bed should hold. Right beside the bedroom door, where it narrows the way in. Directly against the pooja wall, if a pooja shelf sits in the bedroom. And opposite the toilet door in an attached bath, where it reflects the toilet into the room; my toilet Vastu guide covers the attached bath itself. If the plan pushes you into one of these, a smaller dresser on the right wall is better than a large one on the wrong wall.
Venus, grooming and the south-east of your home
A dressing table is pure Venus: mirrors, cosmetics, the care you take over how you look. In Vastu, Venus is given the south-east. When I have the chart and the bedroom plan in front of me, I can tell whether that matters for you. For someone in Shukra mahadasha whose bedroom sits in the south-east, I would keep the dresser on that room’s east wall, bright and well kept, and check the mirror line against the bed twice.
Placing a dresser is part of the ₹1,499 home Vastu reading. If your question is bigger, such as a new marriage or a move into a new bedroom, my Astro-Vastu consultation brings the chart and the floor plan into one session and plans the room around both.
Plan your bedroom with me
Send me the floor plan with north marked and a photo of each bedroom. I will place the bed, the wardrobe and the dressing table together, so they do not work against each other. Home Vastu is ₹1,499 for one floor or one flat, on a 45-minute call online or at my Begur studio, with the written report in 48 hours. Frequently Asked Questions
Can the dressing table be in the south-west of the bedroom?
I would not put it there. The south-west corner suits the bed or a heavy wardrobe. A dressing table is light furniture with a mirror, and it does better on the north or east wall.
Which direction should I face while getting ready?
North or east. When the dressing table stands on the north or east wall, you face that way automatically. If your mirror is on another wall, try to at least avoid facing south.
Can a dressing table face the bed if I cover the mirror at night?
Yes, covering it is an accepted fix when the room leaves no other wall. Use a cloth, a curtain or a shutter, and make it a habit at bedtime, not something done only sometimes.
Is a dressing table in the bathroom or walk-in closet fine?
Yes. In a walk-in area the bed is not in view, so the main rule is the north or east wall. In a bathroom, keep the mirror away from facing the WC.
