Sleeping Direction as per Vastu: Best Head & Bed Position

Illustration: Sleeping Direction as per Vastu: Where Your Head Should Point

Short answer: As per Vastu, the best sleeping direction is with your head towards the south. East is the next best, and it suits students and children. West is a last resort, and north is the one direction I ask everyone to avoid. For the bed position, keep the bed in the south-west part of the bedroom, with the headboard on a solid wall.

What does “sleeping direction” mean in Vastu?

It means the direction your head points when you lie down, not the way the bed or your feet face. When people ask me about sleeping direction, they usually mean the bed. Vastu means the head. Lie down and notice which wall your head is close to: the direction of that wall is your sleeping direction. A headboard on the south wall gives you a south head direction, whatever the window or the door happens to be doing.

The old reasoning treats the body like a small magnet, with the head as its north end, so the head rests better pointed away from the north. You do not have to accept the physics to follow the practice. Turning a bed costs nothing, and in most rooms it takes ten minutes. It is one of the first changes in my Vastu for home guide, room by room for that reason.

The direction rules stay the same in Sydney or Cape Town; see southern hemisphere Vastu.

One thing I have learnt from reading charts next to floor plans: two people can sleep in the same bed, heads to the same wall, and settle very differently. The direction rule is the base. A person’s own chart decides how much it matters.

Which direction should your head be while sleeping? All 8 directions

Head south is best, east is good, west is a last resort, and the three north-side directions (north, north-east, north-west) are to be avoided. Vastu works with eight directions: the four main ones and the four corners between them. Here is my verdict on each.

The corner directions mostly matter in buildings turned at an angle. Many Bangalore apartment towers sit at 30 to 45 degrees to north, so the bedroom walls face north-east, south-east, south-west and north-west instead of the main points. In that case pick the south-west or south-east wall for the headboard, and keep away from the north-east and north-west walls.

Angled towers change more than the bed; the other common flat problems are in Vastu for flat and apartment: facing, rooms and 7 mistakes.

Bed position as per Vastu

The bed should sit in the south-west part of the bedroom, with the head on a solid south (or east) wall, clear of beams, the door line and the north-east corner. Head direction tells you which wall. Bed position tells you where along that wall, and how the rest of the room sits around it. These are the seven points I check in every bedroom.

  1. South-west part of the room. Divide the bedroom into a rough 3 by 3 grid. The bed belongs in the south-west block, or at least on the south-west half. That corner is earth, the steadiest element, and it holds the heaviest piece of furniture in the room.
  2. Headboard on a solid wall. No window, door or open shelf behind the head. A wall with nothing moving behind it is what makes the head end feel protected.
  3. Not under a beam. A beam across the bed, especially across the head or chest, is a common complaint in flats with dropped ceilings. Slide the bed along the wall until it is clear, or box the beam in with a false ceiling.
  4. Not in line with the door. When you lie down, your feet should not point straight out of the doorway. Keep the bed to one side of the door’s path.
  5. Away from the north-east corner. The bed should not touch the north-east corner of the room. That corner stays light and open.
  6. Both sides free. Leave space to get in and out on both sides, at least a foot and a half. A bed pushed into a corner leaves one person climbing over the other, which wears on two people over time.
  7. No mirror facing the bed. If you can see yourself lying down in a mirror, move it or cover it at night. My page on mirror Vastu: which wall the mirror goes on has every placement.
Bed position as per Vastu: bedroom plan with the bed in the south-west, headboard on the south wall, door in the north-east, window on the east, wardrobe on the west wall and mirror on the north wall
A bedroom set the way I like it: bed in the south-west with the head south, wardrobe on the west wall, mirror outside the line of the bed, door and window on the north and east.

Around the bed, a dressing table works best on the north or east wall; the dressing table Vastu notes show how to match it to your headboard. Wardrobes go on the south or west wall. Bedside lamps are fine. A heavy loft directly above the head end is not.

Keep anything that hangs or rings away from the bed; my notes on wind chimes in the bedroom as per Vastu explain the one exception by the window.

The same goes for a busy picture above the headboard; a 7 horses painting belongs in the living room, not the bedroom.

What I findWhat I suggest
Headboard against a windowMove to a solid wall; if impossible, a tall solid headboard and heavy curtains
Feet lined up with the doorSlide the bed sideways out of the door’s path
Beam over the bedShift the bed along the wall, or a false ceiling under the beam
Bed touching the north-east cornerPull it towards the south-west, even by two feet
Bed pushed into a cornerBring it out so both sides are free
Wardrobe mirror facing the bedCover it at night or swap the shutter

Which sleeping direction suits children, students, adults and elders?

East for children and students, south for working adults and elders. Here is how I set it by age.

  • Small children: east, so they wake on the side of the morning light. If the cot fits only one way, south is fine too.
  • School and college students: east. I give this direction for study and memory, and it pairs well with a desk facing east or north. My notes on the desk itself are on the study room Vastu: where the study table goes page.
  • Working adults: south for the main bed. If you work night shifts and sleep through the day, south still holds. The rest of a night-shift routine is on my Vastu for night-shift workers in Electronic City page.
  • Elders: south, ideally in a room on the south or south-west side of the home, away from the noise of the entrance.

What is the best sleeping direction during pregnancy and exam time?

In pregnancy, follow your doctor first, then keep the head south or east. For exam months, east. Neither needs anything more than turning the bed or the pillow.

Pregnancy. Your doctor’s advice comes before anything I say. Doctors often ask women in the later months to sleep on their side, usually the left, and that is about how you lie, not where your head points. The two do not clash. Keep the head towards the south or east, keep the room cool and quiet, and don’t move furniture around in the last weeks just for Vastu. If the bed is heavy, ask someone else to shift it.

Exam time. For the two or three months before board exams or entrance tests, I ask students to sleep with the head to the east, even if they normally sleep south. It is the direction of the rising Sun, and it goes with early mornings and fresh revision. If the bed can’t turn, just move the pillow to the east end for the season.

How should a couple sleep as per Vastu?

A couple’s bed should have the head to the south, sit in the south-west of the room, and leave both sides free. A couple shares one head direction, so I set the bed for the person whose rest needs the most care at that time. Usually that means south. The traditional practice places the wife on the husband’s left; families who follow it can, and those who do not need not worry. I care more that both sides of the bed have room to get in and out, and that the bed is not pushed into a corner.

I also prefer one mattress over two singles pushed together. Where the couple’s room should be in the house is a different question, about zones rather than head direction. I answer it on the bedroom Vastu: which room each person should take page.

Which way should a guest bed face?

South or east is still my first choice, but for a guest I accept the west. A guest room usually sits in the north-west, and guests stay a few nights at a time. If the room is narrow and only the west wall can take the headboard, I accept it for a guest. I would not accept it for a room someone sleeps in every night.

Sleeping direction by rashi: does your Moon sign change it?

No, not the main rule. Head south or east is right for every rashi, and I never recommend a north head for anyone. What your rashi changes is your second choice when south is not possible, and which part of the room or home suits your desk or reading corner.

Your rashi is your Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in when you were born. If you are not sure of yours, my page on how to find your Moon sign (rashi) explains it. Each rashi has a ruling planet, and in Vastu each planet owns a direction: the Sun the east, the Moon the north-west, Mars the south, Mercury the north, Jupiter the north-east, Venus the south-east, Saturn the west and Rahu the south-west. I use the same map for which house facing suits your rashi, so the two pages never disagree.

RashiRuling planet and its directionHead directionIf south is not possibleDesk or reading corner
Mesha (Aries), Vrishchika (Scorpio)Mars, southSouthEastSouth side of the room, sitting to face east
Vrishabha (Taurus), Tula (Libra)Venus, south-eastSouthA south-east wall if the room is turned; else eastSouth-east part of the room
Mithuna (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo)Mercury, northSouthEastNorth part of the room, facing north (head still never north)
Karka (Cancer)Moon, north-westSouthEastNorth-west part of the room
Simha (Leo)Sun, eastSouthEast, a very close secondEast part of the room, facing east
Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meena (Pisces)Jupiter, north-eastSouthEast (not north-east)North-east part of the room, kept light
Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius)Saturn, westSouthA south-west wall if the room is turned; else eastWest part of the room, sitting to face east

Two rows need a word. For Mithuna and Kanya, Mercury owns the north, and people sometimes conclude that a north head suits them. It doesn’t. Mercury’s direction is for your desk and your books, not your pillow. For Makara and Kumbha, Saturn owns the west, but I don’t upgrade a west head for them; I try harder to make south work, because Saturn and the Sun are not friends and the east is the Sun’s direction.

What is the most common sleeping direction mistake?

Placing the bed to suit the TV or the wardrobe, so the head ends up north without anyone noticing. In Bangalore flats this happens a lot in the second bedroom: the window takes one wall, the wardrobe another, and the only empty wall left is the north one. My fix is to move the TV, not the sleeper. A wall-mounted TV can go almost anywhere; a bed has far fewer good options.

The other mistake is reading the direction from the facing of the building. The facing tells you about the entrance, not about the walls of your bedroom, so check the room itself with a phone compass held away from metal. If you live in an east-facing house or a west-facing home, those guides show where the bedrooms usually fall.

My Vastu compass for checking a bedroom wall reads each wall from your phone.

What if the bed cannot turn?

Then you work around it with small changes rather than forcing the room. This is what I suggest, in this order.

  • Move the bed a little away from the north wall and give it a solid headboard. A firm headboard matters more to me than the last few degrees.
  • If two walls are possible, pick east over west.
  • Keep the head end clear of open shelves and heavy overhead lofts.
  • Go back to the seven bed position points above and fix the ones you can: beam, door line, mirror.
  • In a rented flat, a lighter bed frame and a movable headboard make all of this easier. My notes on Vastu for a rented home cover the rest of the flat.

Is sleeping direction scientifically proven?

No. I have not seen any study that proves head direction, on its own, changes your health, and I won’t pretend one exists. The magnet explanation is traditional, not settled science: the Earth’s magnetic field is many times weaker than a fridge magnet.

What is well established is that light, noise, room temperature, late screens and irregular hours affect sleep far more than any direction. So fix those first: dark curtains, a cooler room, the phone away from the bed. Then turn the bed south as well. The practice costs nothing, it does no harm, and many of my clients tell me the room simply feels more settled. That is a fair reason to follow it, and an honest one.

Sleep, the 12th house and the wall behind your head

Head direction is a Vastu rule that applies to everyone. The chart adds the personal layer. Sleep and the bed fall under the 12th house, so when someone’s 12th house is under strain, or Saturn or Rahu is passing through it, I look harder at the zone their bedroom sits in and at the wall behind their head, instead of giving the standard south answer and stopping there.

Another link: for someone running a Moon period, the north-west of the home is their most active zone, so a bedroom there gets more of my attention than it would for anyone else in the family. Setting the beds is part of my ₹1,499 home Vastu call. If you would like your rest looked at with your chart in hand, my Astro-Vastu reading of chart and home together covers both.

Let me check every bed in your home

Send me your floor plan with north marked, and tell me who sleeps in which room. I will set every bed in the home, not just one. Home Vastu is ₹1,499 for one floor or one flat, on a 45-minute call online or at my Begur studio, and your written report follows within 48 hours. If you are outside Bangalore, my online Vastu consultation for your home works the same way. You can read about my Vastu consultations in Bangalore or simply book a time with me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction should my feet point while sleeping as per Vastu?

Feet towards the north, which follows from a south head. With an east head, the feet point west, which is also fine. What I avoid is feet to the south, because that puts the head north.

Can I sleep with my head towards the west?

You can if the room truly leaves no other wall, and for a guest bed I accept it. For a bed you use every night, I would first try moving the TV or the wardrobe so the headboard can go on the south or east wall. That usually solves it.

Why does Vastu say not to sleep with the head to the north?

The traditional reasoning compares the body to a magnet with the head as its north end, and two north ends do not sit well together. Whatever you make of the explanation, it is one of the oldest and most widely followed rules in Indian homes, and an easy one to keep.

Is it okay to sleep with the head towards the north-east?

I ask people to avoid it. The north-east is still a north-side direction, and that corner of the room should stay light. If your headboard is on a north-east wall, a turned building is usually the reason; move it to the south-east or south-west wall if you can.

Is a south-east or south-west head direction acceptable?

Yes, a head towards the south-east or the south-west wall is read as south for this rule. What matters is that the head is not towards the north. If the bed sits diagonally, check where the centre of the headboard points with a compass.

Can the bed face the door, with my feet towards it?

Many families avoid sleeping with the feet straight towards the door, and I agree where the room allows it. It is a smaller issue than the head direction. Fix the head first, then shift the bed slightly so the feet are not lined up with the doorway.

Can the bed be placed against a window?

I’d rather not have a window behind the head. Light, draught and street noise come straight at you. If there is no other wall, use a tall solid headboard and thick curtains that you close at night, and keep the window shut while you sleep.

Where should a couple’s bed be placed in the bedroom?

In the south-west part of the room, head to the south wall, with space on both sides. Keep it off the north-east corner and out of the line of the door, and make sure no mirror shows the bed.

Which direction should a pregnant woman sleep as per Vastu?

Head south or east, after following whatever position her doctor has advised. Comfort and the doctor’s word come first. Don’t shift heavy furniture late in pregnancy just to correct a direction.

Does the sleeping direction matter in hotels or while travelling?

Only lightly. For a few nights I would not ask anyone to rearrange a hotel room. If the bed is fixed with the head to the north, sleep and enjoy the trip. The rule matters most in the bed you use night after night.
