Gemstone recommendation: which gemstone should I wear?

Short answer: The right gemstone is the one for a planet that works for your chart, usually the lord of your lagna, 5th or 9th house, chosen with your running dasha in mind. Picking by sign alone can strengthen the wrong planet. Often no stone is needed. I do not sell gemstones, so my advice carries no sale.

Why I never suggest a stone by your sign alone

Many lists give one stone per sign: coral for Aries, diamond for Taurus, and so on. These lists mix up the sun sign, the moon sign and the lagna, and they ignore what the planet actually does in your chart. A gemstone is meant to strengthen one planet in your life. That only helps when the planet works for you.

Take Mars. For a Leo lagna, Mars rules the 4th and the 9th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka, so red coral can make sense. For a Gemini lagna, Mars rules the 6th and the 11th, and strengthening it is rarely my first choice. Same stone, same Mars, very different advice.

A planet that struggles in the chart often leaves a trace in the house as well. When Jupiter is weak, I want to know whether the north-east corner is blocked or used as a store, since clearing it costs far less than any stone.

How I decide whether you need a gemstone at all

This is my checklist before a stone goes into anyone’s report:

  • Which planets rule your lagna, 5th and 9th houses. These are the usual candidates.
  • Which planets rule the 6th, 8th and 12th houses. Their stones I normally leave out.
  • How strong the planet is: its sign, house, degree, whether it is combust, and its place in the navamsa chart.
  • Which Mahadasha and Antardasha you are in now, and which one comes next.
  • Whether the problem needs a stronger planet at all, or better timing and effort.
  • Your budget. I will not ask you to stretch for a stone.

Quite often my answer is that you do not need one. I would rather say that plainly than add a stone to fill a page.

The nine gemstones and the planets they serve

PlanetGemstone (Hindi name)Usual fingerUsual metal
SunRuby (Manik)RingGold or copper
MoonPearl (Moti)LittleSilver
MarsRed coral (Moonga)RingGold or copper
MercuryEmerald (Panna)LittleGold
JupiterYellow sapphire (Pukhraj)IndexGold
VenusDiamond (Heera)Middle or ringPlatinum or silver
SaturnBlue sapphire (Neelam)MiddleSilver or panchdhatu
RahuHessonite (Gomed)MiddleSilver
KetuCat’s eye (Lehsunia)Middle or littleSilver

Fingers and metals differ between traditions, so treat this table as a guide, not a prescription. In my written remedies I name the stone, a sensible weight range, the metal, the finger and the day to start, only for the planets your chart supports.

Stones I handle with extra care

Blue sapphire, hessonite and cat’s eye act on Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. I suggest them less often, and when I do, it is after a close look at the dasha. Please do not wear one because it worked for a friend or a colleague. I also avoid putting stones of planets that are enemies in your chart on the same hand, such as ruby with blue sapphire.

People often ask for a stone to speed up a wedding or a promotion. Those questions start with the 7th or the 10th house and the running period, which I explain on astrology for marriage timing and career astrology. A stone may support the answer. It rarely is the answer.

What I suggest before, or instead of, a gemstone

  • A mantra for the planet, with how many times and on which day.
  • Daan, a simple giving linked to the planet’s day.
  • A small change in routine that the planet rewards, such as discipline for Saturn or study for Mercury.
  • Clearing or using the part of your home that belongs to that planet.
  • For some charts, a rudraksha is a gentler choice than a stone.

I do not sell gemstones and I have no tie with any jeweller, so nothing in my advice depends on you buying one. If you do buy, ask for a certificate from a recognised gem lab showing the stone is natural and untreated, and buy from someone you trust.

When the planet behind the stone also has a corner of your home

Choosing a gemstone is about one planet. The house shows me where that same planet is being helped or held back every day. Suppose your chart calls for a stronger Jupiter during its Antardasha. Before you spend on a yellow sapphire, I would look at the north-east of your home. A toilet, a heavy cupboard or a store there pulls against what we are trying to build, and clearing it may even change my advice on the stone.

My ₹1,499 astrology call is the right first step if the stone is your only question. When you want the chart and the rooms looked at together, with each remedy placed in time, I do that in an Astro-Vastu reading.

Ask me before you buy a stone

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose a gemstone by my zodiac sign?

I would not. A sign list cannot tell whether the planet rules good or difficult houses for you. Two people with the same Moon sign can have different lagnas, and the stone that helps one can strengthen a troublesome house lord for the other.

How long does a gemstone take to show results?

There is no fixed clock, and I do not promise results from any stone. Traditionally people give it a few weeks and watch how they feel and how things move. If something feels wrong, take it off and speak to me before trying again.

Is it safe to wear blue sapphire (Neelam)?

Only if Saturn is a clear friend to your chart and your dasha supports it. Many astrologers, me included, suggest a short trial period first. Wearing Neelam because it worked for someone else is the most common mistake I hear about.

Are cheaper substitute stones (uparatna) worth it?

Substitutes such as garnet or moonstone are traditionally weaker versions of the main stones. They can be a reasonable start when the budget is tight, but the first question is still whether that planet should be strengthened at all.

Do you sell gemstones or earn from jewellers?

No. I do not sell gemstones, yantras or pujas, and I take nothing from any shop. I tell you what suits your chart, if anything, and you buy wherever you trust, with a lab certificate.
