Short answer: The navamsa chart, or D9, is the ninth divisional chart in Vedic astrology. Each sign is cut into nine parts of 3°20′, and every planet is placed again by the part it falls in. Astrologers read the D9 for marriage and the spouse, and to judge how strong each planet in the birth chart really is.
How the D9 is built
Take any sign of 30° and cut it into nine equal parts of 3°20′. Each part is a navamsa. Twelve signs times nine gives 108 navamsas, and that is no accident: 27 nakshatras times four padas is also 108, so every navamsa is exactly one nakshatra pada.
Where the counting begins depends on the element of the sign. I keep this little table on my desk.
| Element | Signs | First navamsa starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Mesha, Simha, Dhanu | Mesha |
| Earth | Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara | Makara |
| Air | Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha | Tula |
| Water | Karka, Vrishchika, Meena | Karka |
Two worked examples. A Sun at 15° Mesha is in the fifth part of that sign. Counting five signs from Mesha gives Simha, so the Sun is in Simha in the D9. A Moon at 12° Vrishabha is in the fourth part. Counting four signs from Makara gives Mesha, so the Moon sits in Mesha in the D9.
The D9 also has a counterpart at home. When the D9 shows strain around marriage, the first room I ask about is the couple’s bedroom, which Vastu places in the south-west, the zone of stability for the head of the family.
Why the birth time matters even more here
The D9 lagna changes on average every 12 to 15 minutes, because the rising sign takes about two hours and the navamsa splits it into nine. The Moon changes navamsa roughly every six hours. So a time noted as “around 10 in the morning” can move the D9 lagna by a sign or more. When I am unsure, I check the D9 lagna against events the person already knows, such as the year of marriage, before I lean on it.
Vargottama: the same sign in both charts
When a planet occupies the same sign in the birth chart and the D9, it is called vargottama. It happens in the first navamsa of a movable sign, the fifth navamsa of a fixed sign and the ninth navamsa of a dual sign. I read a vargottama planet as dependable: what it shows in the birth chart, it tends to deliver. A vargottama lagna gives a person a steady sense of who they are.
Checking how strong a planet really is
The birth chart shows the promise. The D9 shows how much of that promise holds up. This is the comparison I make for every planet that matters to the question.
| In the birth chart | In the D9 | How I read it |
|---|---|---|
| Exalted or own sign | Exalted or own sign | Strong. It gives what it promises. |
| Exalted | Debilitated | Looks good on paper; results come thinner than expected. |
| Debilitated | Exalted or own sign | A weak start that tends to improve with effort and age. |
| Any sign | Same sign (vargottama) | Steady and reliable. |
| Well placed | With malefics, no good aspect | Watch it in its own dasha. |
How I use the D9 for marriage
Most people come to the navamsa because of marriage, and it does carry that weight. My page on marriage timing covers when. Here is what I read in the D9 itself.
- The D9 lagna and its lord: how you behave inside a partnership, which is often different from how you appear outside it.
- The 7th house of the D9 and the planets in it: the nature of the spouse and of the bond.
- Venus and Jupiter in the D9: whether the significators of marriage are comfortable or strained.
- Where the birth chart’s 7th lord lands in the D9: whether the promise of the 7th house is backed up.
In kundli matching I put both partners’ D9 charts side by side, because two people can score well on guna points and still pull in different directions in the navamsa. Many astrologers also read the D9 as the chart of the second half of life, and I find that a useful lens once someone is past their mid-thirties.
What the D9 does not do
The D9 is a magnifier, not a second birth chart. A planet’s house in the navamsa adds colour, but the life areas themselves are judged from the main chart. I never read the D9 on its own, and I am wary of anyone who predicts a spouse’s looks or job from it alone. For the full picture of how the main chart is read, see my kundli analysis page.
The D9, your marriage and the south-west bedroom
The navamsa shows how a marriage holds up from the inside. The plan of your home shows where that marriage lives day to day. When I study both, the advice gets far more specific. Say Venus is debilitated in the D9 and the couple sleeps in a north-east or south-east room: I would look at moving them to the south-west bedroom, bed head to the south, timed for a Venus or Jupiter antardasha.
If your question is about your own D9, the ₹1,499 astrology reading answers it. When a marriage is about to begin or is going through a strained period and you want the bedroom considered too, the Astro-Vastu consultation for couples is the fuller choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the D1 and D9 chart?
The D1 is the main birth chart: it shows the houses, life areas and the overall promise. The D9 divides every sign into nine and shows how well each planet can deliver that promise, with special weight for marriage. The D1 always comes first; the D9 confirms or qualifies it.
Is a debilitated planet in the navamsa bad?
It is a caution, not a verdict. A planet strong in the birth chart but debilitated in the D9 tends to give less than it seems to promise. Cancellation of debilitation, aspects from benefics and the planet’s house in the main chart can all soften it, so read it in context.
Can my navamsa chart be wrong if my birth time is off by 10 minutes?
The planets will mostly stay put, since only the Moon moves quickly enough to shift. The D9 lagna, though, can change sign within 10 minutes. If the time is uncertain, I test the D9 lagna against known life events before using it for anything important.
What does vargottama lagna mean?
It means the sign rising at your birth is also the lagna of your D9. Classical texts treat it as a mark of a stable, self-assured nature. It happens only in specific slices of each sign, so a small error in birth time can create or remove it.
Can the D9 chart show what my spouse will be like?
It shows tendencies: temperament, values and the kind of bond. I read the 7th house of the D9, its lord and the condition of Venus and Jupiter. I do not predict a spouse’s looks, job or city from it, and I would be cautious of anyone who does.
