Short answer: Rudraksha is worn for steadiness of mind, focus in prayer and a sense of protection. Each mukhi is linked in tradition with a deity and a planet: five mukhi with Jupiter, seven with Saturn, eight with Rahu. Five mukhi suits almost anyone. For a specific planet I choose from your chart, and I do not sell beads.
What a rudraksha is, and why people wear it
A rudraksha is the dried seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, which grows in the Himalayan foothills, Nepal and parts of Indonesia. The lines running from top to bottom are its mukhis, or faces. Tradition ties the bead to Shiva, and the number of faces decides which deity and which planet it is linked with.
The benefits people speak of are steadiness of mind, better focus in prayer and japa, and a felt sense of protection. I describe these as what the tradition holds, not as medical effects. A rudraksha is not a cure for any illness, and I say this to everyone who asks.
Each graha linked to a bead also rules a direction of the home. So when a seven mukhi is worn for Saturn, I find myself wondering about the west side of that person’s house, the side Saturn governs in Vastu.
Rudraksha 1 to 14 mukhi: deity, planet and use
| Mukhi | Deity in tradition | Planet | What it is traditionally worn for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shiva | Sun | Devotion and concentration; a true round one mukhi is extremely rare |
| 2 | Ardhanarishvara | Moon | Harmony between partners and in the family |
| 3 | Agni | Mars | Letting go of old guilt, self-confidence |
| 4 | Brahma | Mercury | Study, memory and speech |
| 5 | Kalagni Rudra | Jupiter | Everyday wear and the japa mala; suits almost anyone |
| 6 | Kartikeya | Venus | Willpower and steadiness in relationships |
| 7 | Mahalakshmi | Saturn | Patience through slow, testing periods |
| 8 | Ganesha | Rahu | Clearing obstacles, worn in Rahu periods |
| 9 | Durga | Ketu | Courage, worn in Ketu periods |
| 10 | Vishnu | None; said to calm all nine | Protection and peace at home |
| 11 | Hanuman (Ekadasha Rudra) | None fixed | Courage and meditation |
| 12 | Surya | Sun | Confidence and leadership |
| 13 | Kamadeva | Venus | Charm and fulfilment in relationships |
| 14 | Hanuman (Shiva’s third eye) | Saturn | Intuition and judgement in Saturn periods |
Different texts and lineages give slightly different deities and planets for a few mukhis, especially 7, 11, 13 and 14. I follow the common Shiva Purana based tradition and tell you where opinions differ.
Why I read your chart before naming a mukhi
Most people pick a bead by what they hear: four mukhi for students, seven for money, eight for Rahu. I start from the other end. First I see which planet needs support, which period you are running, and whether a bead is the right tool at all.
- Five mukhi is the safe general bead. If you simply want one for prayer, it is enough.
- For a specific planet, I pick the mukhi linked with the planet that rules a good house for you, or the one whose dasha you are in. Someone heading into Saturn mahadasha may be suggested a seven or fourteen mukhi.
- Unlike a gemstone, a rudraksha is not usually thought to harm when the planet is badly placed, so I am more relaxed about it. I still prefer a reason over a guess. For stones, see my notes on gemstone recommendation.
- Questions about delayed marriage or a stuck job start with the 7th or 10th house and the dasha, which I explain in marriage timing astrology and career astrology. A bead supports that work; it does not replace it.
How to start wearing one, and how to care for it
- Thread it in red or black silk, or cap it in silver or gold.
- Start on a Monday, in the month of Shravan, or on Maha Shivratri, which falls on 6 Mar 2027.
- Wash it in clean water and chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times before wearing.
- Many families take it off for sleep, at funerals and in the bath. Follow your own family’s custom.
- Oil it lightly now and then so the seed does not dry and crack.
Buying honestly
I do not sell rudraksha, yantras or pujas, and I have no link with any seller. Fakes are common, especially in one mukhi and the higher mukhis, where faces are sometimes carved or beads glued together. The sinking-in-water test proves nothing. Count the lines yourself, ask for an X-ray report from a known lab for costly beads, and do not let anyone rush you.
Your mukhi, your dasha and the corner you pray in
A rudraksha supports one planet in your chart. Your home can support the same planet, or quietly work against it. Picture someone starting Saturn’s mahadasha who has been advised a seven mukhi. I would also look at the west of their house for heavy clutter or a cut, and at the north-east, where the puja place usually sits, to see that the corner is open and clean. The bead, the room and the timing then point the same way.
The ₹1,499 astrology call covers which mukhi, if any, suits you. If you would like your chart and your home read together so the remedies support each other, I offer a combined Astro-Vastu consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which rudraksha is best for me?
If you only want a bead for prayer and calm, five mukhi is enough for nearly everyone. If you want one for a particular planet or period, the choice depends on your lagna, house lords and running dasha, which I read from your birth details.
Can women wear rudraksha?
Yes. Nothing in the main tradition forbids it. Some families have their own customs, for example around periods, and I suggest following what your family is comfortable with rather than worrying about it.
Can I wear more than one rudraksha together?
Yes. Rudraksha of different mukhis are often strung together in one mala or kantha. I still keep the number small and purposeful, linked to what your chart needs, so you know why each bead is there.
Does a rudraksha have side effects?
Tradition does not treat it as harmful the way an unsuited gemstone can be. The real risks are paying too much for a fake and expecting it to fix a problem that needs a decision or a doctor. It is a support for practice, not a medicine.
When is the best day to start wearing a rudraksha?
Monday is the usual choice, and many people wait for Shravan or Maha Shivratri, which is on 6 Mar 2027. Wash it, chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times, and begin. If you are wearing it for a planet, I can suggest a better date from your chart.
