Short answer: Jupiter mahadasha lasts 16 years and is often linked with marriage, children, learning and slow, respectable wealth. How much it gives depends on Jupiter’s condition: exalted in Cancer or in its own signs it supports well; debilitated in Capricorn, combust or joined by Rahu, results come later and need more care.
Sixteen years everyone calls lucky
Jupiter mahadasha has a reputation as the good one. Guru is the planet of wisdom, children, marriage for women in traditional reading, wealth and faith, so people expect sixteen years of blessings. Sometimes that is what happens. Just as often someone writes to me in the fourth year of Jupiter asking why nothing has improved. In nearly every such chart the answer is the same: the name of the dasha lord promised more than its condition could deliver.
Jupiter mahadasha follows Rahu and is followed by Saturn. If your Moon is in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada, you were born in it. The opening sub-period, Jupiter / Jupiter, lasts 2 years 1 month 18 days. The longest is Jupiter / Saturn at 2 years 6 months 12 days, and the last is Jupiter / Rahu at 2 years 4 months 24 days. The full method for working these out is on my dasha analysis page.
Jupiter has a place in the home too. It is linked with the north-east, the corner of prayer and study, so a strong Jupiter period lived in a house with a blocked north-east often feels slower to open up.
Why Jupiter’s condition matters more than its name
Before I say anything about a Jupiter period, I check four things: the sign Jupiter is in, how close it is to the Sun, which planets sit with it, and which houses it rules for your Lagna. This table is the first of those checks.
| Jupiter’s condition | Where it happens | How the dasha usually feels |
|---|---|---|
| Exalted | Cancer | Strong support, unless spoiled by Rahu or the Sun |
| Own sign | Sagittarius or Pisces | Steady, dependable growth through the houses it rules |
| Friendly sign | Aries, Leo or Scorpio | Helpful; good counsel, fair results for effort |
| Neutral sign | Aquarius | Mixed; results follow the houses Jupiter rules |
| Enemy sign | Taurus, Gemini, Virgo or Libra | Results come late or need more effort |
| Debilitated | Capricorn | Good intentions, weak follow-through, unless cancelled |
| Combust | Within about 11 degrees of the Sun | Advice does not land; elders overshadow you |
| With Rahu | Same sign (Guru Chandal yoga) | Unusual teachers; check every adviser twice |
When Jupiter is weak or debilitated
A debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn is the case people fear most, and the one where I see most confusion. Debilitation is not a sentence. If Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, or the Moon, the lord of Jupiter’s exaltation sign, stands in a kendra from the Lagna, the debilitation is considered cancelled, and I have seen such charts do better in Jupiter mahadasha than people with an untouched Jupiter. If there is no cancellation, the period still runs. It tends to bring good ideas that need a practical partner, and advice that sounds right but should be checked.
Jupiter ruling the 6th, 8th or 12th from your Lagna is the other weak case. For Taurus Lagna Jupiter rules the 8th and 11th, and for Libra Lagna the 3rd and 6th, so its dasha can bring sudden changes, debt or health questions alongside its gifts.
Marriage in Jupiter mahadasha
Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from where it sits, so a Jupiter placed in the 1st, 3rd or 11th looks straight at the 7th. In such charts, and especially in a woman’s chart where Jupiter is read as the significator of the husband, this dasha is one of the more common windows for marriage. I still confirm it in the Navamsa, and with the 7th lord, before I call it a window. My guide on when marriage is likely in your chart explains the rest of that method.
Children and the 5th house
Jupiter is the natural significator of children. When it is strong and connected to the 5th house, its dasha is often when couples start a family or when children’s education takes centre stage. When it is weak, I do not predict difficulty from the dasha alone; I tell couples to follow their doctor’s advice first and treat the chart as a second opinion on timing.
Wealth and the 2nd and 11th
Jupiter is also a significator of wealth, but money in its dasha comes in Jupiter’s style: through teaching, advising, finance, law, consulting, or a steady rise in a respected role. It rarely comes through quick bets. A Jupiter period with a strong 2nd and 11th house tends to build savings slowly. With a weak Jupiter, the usual pattern is over-generosity: lending, standing surety for other people’s loans, or trusting the wrong adviser.
The transit on top of your dasha
From 31 October 2026 Jupiter moves into Leo. For anyone running Jupiter mahadasha, the transit decides which year of the sixteen feels like the good one. My Jupiter transit guide shows what that move means for each Moon sign. Jupiter with the Moon in a kendra also forms Gajakesari yoga, which tends to show most clearly in this dasha.
A quick self-check before your reading
- Which sign is Jupiter in, and is it within about 11 degrees of the Sun?
- Which two houses does Jupiter rule from your Lagna?
- Is Rahu or Saturn in the same sign as Jupiter?
- Which sub-period are you in today, and when does it change?
What the north-east adds to a Jupiter mahadasha reading
Sixteen years of Guru will play out inside some home or office, and that space has its own north-east. When I look at the chart and the floor plan side by side, I can see whether the zone Jupiter favours is open, cluttered or sitting under a staircase. Take a Jupiter that rules your 9th house, the house of teachers and fortune. If the north-east of your flat holds the toilet, that corner becomes the first thing I correct, before any remedy for the planet itself.
My ₹1,499 astrology session covers the dasha on its own, and for many people that is enough. For the house and the chart side by side, with corrections timed to the sub-periods that matter, look at a combined Astro-Vastu reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jupiter mahadasha always good?
No. It is usually helpful when Jupiter is in a good sign and rules good houses for your Lagna. When Jupiter is debilitated without cancellation, combust, or rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, the period can be mixed, with expenses or poor advice alongside its gifts.
What are the effects of debilitated Jupiter mahadasha?
Debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn tends to give good intentions but weak follow-through, and advice that needs checking. If the debilitation is cancelled by Saturn or the Moon in a kendra from the Lagna, results can be much better than people expect.
Can marriage happen in Jupiter mahadasha?
Yes, it is a common window, especially when Jupiter aspects the 7th house or the 7th lord, and in a woman’s chart where Jupiter signifies the husband. The Navamsa and the running sub-period still have to agree.
Which antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha is best?
It depends on your chart. Jupiter / Jupiter and Jupiter / Moon are often comfortable, but if Saturn is a strong yogakaraka for your Lagna, Jupiter / Saturn can be the period of real career progress.
What comes after Jupiter mahadasha?
Saturn mahadasha, which runs for nineteen years. The last sub-period of Jupiter, Jupiter / Rahu, lasts about 2 years 4 months and is often a busier, less settled stretch before Saturn begins.
