Short answer: Kaal sarp dosh is said to form when all seven planets, Sun to Saturn, sit on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis. It has 12 named types, from Anant to Sheshnag, set by the house Rahu occupies. It is not named in the major classical texts, and on its own it rarely explains a life.
How the yoga forms
Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly opposite each other. Draw a line between them and the chart splits into two halves. If the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all fall inside one of those halves, the chart is called kaal sarp. If even one planet sits outside, many astrologers call it partial, and some do not count it at all.
Rahu and Ketu move slowly, and the slower planets sometimes bunch on one side of the axis for weeks or months. While that lasts, the pattern repeats on many birth dates as the Moon passes through the same half. It is worth remembering before reading anything dramatic about it.
Where the idea comes from
You will not find kaal sarp yoga named in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or the other major classical texts I study. It came into wide use much later, and most of what you read about it online is recent. I do not wave it away, because the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy do matter in a Vedic chart. I read it as one feature of the chart, not the headline. If you are new to the Vedic view of the lunar nodes, my note on Vedic and Western astrology gives the background.
The nodes have their own corners in a home as well. Vastu links Rahu with the south-west, the zone of weight and stability, so when Rahu dominates a chart I want to know whether that corner is solid or cut away.
The 12 types of kaal sarp dosh
The type is named after the house Rahu occupies, counted from the Lagna. Ketu is always in the seventh house from Rahu.
| # | Type | Rahu in | Ketu in | Life areas usually linked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anant | 1st | 7th | Self, health, partnership |
| 2 | Kulik | 2nd | 8th | Family, speech, savings |
| 3 | Vasuki | 3rd | 9th | Siblings, courage, fortune |
| 4 | Shankhpal | 4th | 10th | Home, mother, property, work |
| 5 | Padma | 5th | 11th | Children, studies, gains |
| 6 | Mahapadma | 6th | 12th | Debts, disputes, expenses |
| 7 | Takshak | 7th | 1st | Marriage and business partners |
| 8 | Karkotak | 8th | 2nd | Sudden change, family money |
| 9 | Shankhachud | 9th | 3rd | Father, faith, luck |
| 10 | Ghatak | 10th | 4th | Career and home life |
| 11 | Vishdhar | 11th | 5th | Income, friends, children |
| 12 | Sheshnag | 12th | 6th | Expenses, foreign links, rivals |
Some books spell these differently, for example Shankhnaad for the ninth or Patak for the tenth. The life areas in the last column come from the houses on that axis. They are themes to read, not predictions.
What matters more than the label
- The houses Rahu and Ketu occupy, and the lords of their signs
- Any planet sitting with Rahu or Ketu
- The dasha you are running; Rahu and Ketu periods are when the axis speaks loudest
- The strength of your Lagna lord and of Jupiter
- Whether the yoga is full or partial
These are the same steps I take in any kundli analysis. Rahu and Ketu also change signs on 5 December 2026, when Rahu enters Capricorn and Ketu enters Cancer. How the transiting nodes cross your natal axis is one more thing I check; see Rahu Ketu transit.
What I recommend, and what I do not
I do not sell pujas, yantras or gemstones, and I will not tell you that a ceremony at one particular temple is the only way through. People who choose a kaal sarp puja do so out of their own faith, and that is their decision to make. What I suggest is simpler: understanding which part of life the axis touches, planning big decisions around the dasha, and, where it suits you, a short mantra practice for Rahu or for Shiva that you can keep up at home. I give the mantra and the count in writing after the reading.
If the real worry is a marriage that keeps slipping or a career that stalls, that question is better answered from the whole chart. My pages on marriage timing and career astrology show how I read each one.
Rahu, Ketu and the south-west corner of your home
A kaal sarp reading shows which life areas the Rahu and Ketu axis touches and when it speaks loudest. Bringing in the layout of your home adds a practical side: I can see whether the corner tied to Rahu is steady, and whether the rooms linked to the houses on that axis are in daily use or neglected.
Say Rahu sits in your 4th house and a Rahu antardasha is starting. I would check the south-west for a toilet, a sunken floor or a missing corner, and the north of the home for clutter, then suggest fixes that leave the structure as it is. Frequently Asked Questions
Is kaal sarp dosh dangerous?
No single yoga makes a life dangerous. Kaal sarp points to houses where Rahu and Ketu create pressure or unusual drive, and its effect depends on the rest of the chart and the dasha. Many people with this pattern lead settled, successful lives. Fear-based readings help nobody.
How do I check if I have kaal sarp dosh?
Look at your birth chart and see whether all seven planets fall between Rahu and Ketu on one side. Many apps flag it automatically, but some count a partial pattern and some do not. A reading confirms which type it is and whether it is full or partial.
Does kaal sarp dosh affect marriage?
It touches marriage most directly when Rahu or Ketu falls in the 7th house, as in Anant and Takshak. Even then, the 7th lord, Venus and the dasha decide far more. I read marriage questions from the whole chart rather than from this one pattern.
Is a puja compulsory for kaal sarp dosh?
No. Nothing in the chart makes a ritual compulsory. Some people find a puja comforting and choose it out of faith, and that is their right. I do not sell or arrange pujas; I suggest understanding, sensible timing and, where it suits, a simple mantra you can do yourself.
Can kaal sarp yoga give good results?
It can. Rahu gives hunger and ambition, and in a well-supported chart that often shows as hard work and late but solid success. The same pattern reads very differently depending on the houses involved, the Lagna lord and the dasha you are in.
