Short answer: Gajakesari yoga forms when Jupiter sits in a kendra from the Moon: the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign from it. It is said to give respect, wisdom and a steady mind. Roughly one chart in three has it, but it gives clear results only when Jupiter and the Moon are strong, unafflicted and activated by their dashas.
What Gajakesari yoga is
Gajakesari yoga forms when Jupiter sits in a kendra from the Moon: in the same sign as the Moon, or in the 4th, 7th or 10th sign from it. The name joins gaja, the elephant, and kesari, the lion. The classical texts say the person with this yoga is respected, intelligent, generous, steady in mind and remembered after they are gone.
Because the relationship works both ways, if Jupiter is 4th from the Moon then the Moon is 10th from Jupiter, and the yoga still stands. Some astrologers also count Jupiter in a kendra from the Lagna. I note that, but the Moon version is the one I treat as Gajakesari.
Why so many charts have it, and so few feel it
Jupiter can be in any of twelve signs counted from the Moon, and four of those count as kendras. So roughly one chart in three has Gajakesari yoga on paper. If one person in three were living the life the texts describe, we would notice. That is the first thing I tell people who ask about it: having the yoga and having it work are two different statements.
The yoga describes a link between the mind (the Moon) and wisdom and grace (Jupiter). That link only gives results when both planets are in a fit state to give them.
The two planets behind this yoga also have corners in a home: the Moon in the north-west and Jupiter in the north-east. I often find that how those two zones are kept says something about how the yoga is being lived.
The conditions I check before I call it working
| Check | Supports the yoga | Weakens the yoga |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter’s sign | Cancer, Sagittarius, Pisces, or a friendly sign | Capricorn (debilitated) without cancellation |
| Moon’s strength | Bright Moon, well away from the new Moon | Moon near Amavasya, or in Scorpio |
| Closeness to the Sun | Jupiter well clear of the Sun | Jupiter combust, within about 11 degrees |
| Company | Benefics with or aspecting the pair | Rahu, Ketu or Saturn sitting with either planet |
| Houses involved | Kendra or trikona from the Lagna | Pair falls in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna |
| Navamsa | Jupiter and Moon in good signs in the D9 | Either one debilitated in the D9 |
| Timing | Jupiter or Moon dasha running | Neither active for decades |
A chart that passes most of these checks usually shows the yoga in the person’s life: people come to them for advice, they recover well from setbacks, and their reputation tends to outlast any single job. A chart that fails most of them has the shape of the yoga and very little of its effect.
When it shows up in life
Yogas give their results mainly in the dashas of the planets that form them, which is why I read every yoga alongside a dasha analysis. Gajakesari tends to come alive in Jupiter mahadasha and in Moon mahadasha, and in the Jupiter and Moon sub-periods of other dashas. Someone born with a strong Gajakesari who never runs either period in adulthood may feel it only lightly. A transit of Jupiter over the natal Moon or over the yoga’s sign can also make it more visible for a year or so.
Strong and weak versions, side by side
Take two charts where Jupiter and the Moon share Cancer. In one, the Moon is nearly full, Jupiter is exalted and the pair sits in the 4th house from the Lagna. That is the textbook version, and in Jupiter’s dasha it often brings a settled home, respect and sound judgement. In the other, the same pair sits in the 8th house, Rahu joins them, and the Moon is two days from Amavasya. The yoga is still technically there, but I would not lead a reading with it.
The same honesty runs the other way. A chart without Gajakesari is not missing anything essential. Many people with steady minds and good reputations do not have it.
Quick checklist for your own chart
- Count from your Moon sign to Jupiter’s sign. Is it 1, 4, 7 or 10?
- Was your birth near a full Moon or a new Moon?
- Is Jupiter in Capricorn, or very close to the Sun?
- Does Rahu, Ketu or Saturn sit with either planet?
- Which house from your Lagna holds the pair?

Gajakesari yoga and the two corners of your home it touches
A yoga in the chart describes a promise. The house describes the conditions you live in while you wait for that promise to show. Jupiter is linked with the north-east and the Moon with the north-west, so for a Gajakesari chart I look at both corners on the plan. Say the yoga is strong, Jupiter mahadasha is a few years away, and the north-east of the flat is a storeroom full of old cartons. Clearing that corner before the period begins is a small, sensible step.
A ₹1,499 reading of the yoga by itself is where most people begin. When you want the chart and the home looked at side by side, with changes planned around the Jupiter and Moon periods, I offer that as an Astro-Vastu consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have Gajakesari yoga?
Find your Moon sign and Jupiter’s sign in your birth chart. Count from the Moon’s sign to Jupiter’s, counting the Moon’s own sign as 1. If you land on 1, 4, 7 or 10, the yoga is present. Whether it is strong needs further checks.
Is Gajakesari yoga rare?
No. Since four of the twelve positions count, about one chart in three has it. A strong, unafflicted Gajakesari, with a bright Moon and a well placed Jupiter in good houses, is much less common.
Does Gajakesari yoga break if Jupiter is debilitated?
It is considered greatly weakened with Jupiter in Capricorn, unless the debilitation is cancelled elsewhere in the chart. A Moon near the new Moon, or Rahu joining either planet, weakens it too.
At what age does Gajakesari yoga give results?
There is no fixed age. It usually shows during Jupiter or Moon mahadasha, or their sub-periods within other dashas. Your dasha timeline tells you when those come in your life.
