Navagraha: The Nine Grahas and What Each One Rules

Short answer: The Navagraha are the nine grahas of Vedic astrology: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu. Seven are visible bodies, while Rahu and Ketu are the points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. Each graha rules areas of life, a weekday and a direction.

Why graha, and not planet

Graha means “one that seizes”. In Jyotish it is anything in the sky that takes hold of our lives, which is why the list includes the Sun and the Moon, which are not planets at all, and Rahu and Ketu, which have no body. Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path, the nodes where eclipses happen, and they are called chhaya grahas or shadow grahas. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not part of the nine and I do not use them.

Each of the nine also keeps a corner of the house. That is why I never think of a graha only on paper: a troubled Venus in the chart and a neglected south-east kitchen usually turn up in the same conversation.

The nine grahas at a glance

The dasha years add up to 120, the full Vimshottari cycle. Which graha’s period you start life in depends on the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth, and I go through how these periods unfold on my dasha analysis page. For Rahu and Ketu, texts disagree on exaltation, and a few traditions give Ketu the North-West; I stay with the South-West pairing most Vastu texts use.

Benefic or malefic depends on your lagna

By nature, Jupiter, Venus, a waxing Moon and an untroubled Mercury are counted as benefics. The Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are counted as malefics. That is the textbook starting line, and it is often misread.

In a real chart, what a graha does depends on which houses it rules from your lagna. Saturn is the clearest example. For someone with a Vrishabha lagna, Saturn rules the 9th and 10th houses, fortune and career, and becomes the best graha in the chart. For a Tula lagna it rules the 4th and 5th and behaves just as kindly. So when someone tells me “Shani is bad for me”, my first question is which lagna they have.

How I read the nine in your chart

  • Placement: the house and sign each graha sits in.
  • Dignity: exalted, own sign, friendly, or debilitated.
  • Lordship: which houses it owns from your lagna.
  • Company and aspects: which grahas sit with it or look at it.
  • Timing: whether its dasha or antardasha is running now, or due soon.

The last point matters most. A graha placed badly but not yet in its period is a note for later. A graha in charge of your current period is the story of your life right now. That is how a kundli analysis moves from a list of placements to something you can act on.

Each graha is given one direction, which is how Jyotish and Vastu meet. The North belongs to Mercury, so a cluttered or blocked North often shows up alongside trouble in trade or study. The South-East is Venus and fire, the kitchen’s natural place. The South-West, held by Rahu and Ketu, wants weight and stability. I map these on the floor plan using the 16 Vastu zones, and when the same graha is weak in the chart and its zone is disturbed in the house, I work on both together.

What the grahas are doing in the months ahead

Three slow movements shape the next year for everyone. Jupiter enters Leo on 31 Oct 2026, covered on my Jupiter transit page. Rahu moves into Capricorn and Ketu into Cancer on 5 Dec 2026. Saturn enters Aries on 3 Jun 2027. Which house each one crosses in your chart decides whether you feel it as a push, a pause or very little at all.

Remedies, without anything to buy

I do not sell gemstones, yantras or pujas, so I can be plain about this. Most graha remedies cost nothing but attention. A mantra of the graha on its own weekday. Charity that fits it, like helping workers and older people on Saturdays for Shani. Behaviour that fits it too: respect for your father strengthens the Sun, regular study and clear speech help Mercury. If your family wants a Navagraha shanti, do it with your own family priest, and you do not need my permission or my involvement.

Reading the nine grahas on your floor plan

The table gives each graha a direction, but a direction only becomes useful when I know which graha is in charge of your life now. If Shani’s dasha is running and the west of the home holds a toilet or a balcony piled with junk, I treat that west wall as part of the Shani remedy, alongside the mantra and the Saturday charity. The same logic applies to all nine grahas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Rahu and Ketu called shadow planets?

They have no physical body. They are the two points where the Moon’s orbit cuts across the Sun’s apparent path, always exactly opposite each other. Eclipses happen near these points, which is why old texts describe Rahu and Ketu as swallowing the Sun and Moon.

Which of the nine planets is the most important in a chart?

There is no single answer. The lord of your lagna and the graha whose dasha you are running usually matter most for you personally. The Moon matters for the mind and for timing. A graha that looks dramatic on paper may stay quiet until its period arrives.

How do I know which graha is weak in my kundli?

Look at its sign first: debilitation is the clearest sign of weakness. Then check whether it sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, is combust near the Sun, or is hemmed in by malefics. The divisional charts confirm it. A weak graha matters most during its own period.

Does a Navagraha puja remove bad planetary effects?

A puja done with sincerity can bring calm, and many families find meaning in it. It does not rewrite a chart. I have seen steady, simple remedies kept over months do more than a single expensive ritual. I do not perform or book pujas.

Is it good to keep a Navagraha yantra or idol at home?

It is a matter of faith, not a requirement. If you keep one, the North-East or the pooja corner is the usual place, kept clean and not on the floor. Nothing in your chart depends on owning one, and I do not sell them.
