Short answer: Your moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born, counted in the sidereal zodiac. In Vedic astrology it is your rashi, and it carries more weight than the sun sign, because dashas, sade sati and transit readings are all counted from it. To find it you need your birth date, time and place.
Why Vedic astrology starts from the Moon
In Jyotish the Moon stands for manas, the mind: how you feel, react, rest and remember. It is also the fastest body in the chart. It spends only about two and a quarter days in each sign and about a day in each nakshatra, so it separates people born a few days apart in a way the Sun cannot.
In Vastu the Moon is given the north-west, the zone of movement, guests and restlessness. So when a person with a troubled Moon tells me they cannot settle at home, I look at that corner of the house as well.
Three working tools are counted from the Moon. The nakshatra the Moon sat in at birth decides where your Vimshottari dasha sequence starts. Transits, called gochar, are judged by the house a planet crosses counted from your Moon. And sade sati is defined by Saturn’s passage over the sign before your Moon, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it. When a newspaper in India prints rashiphal, it is written for Moon signs.
Sun sign vs moon sign
| Sun sign | Moon sign | |
|---|---|---|
| Time spent in one sign | About a month | About two and a quarter days |
| Details needed to find it | Birth date | Birth date, time and place |
| What it describes | Outer self, vitality, father, authority | Mind, feelings, habits, mother |
| Where it is used most | Western sun-sign columns | Rashiphal, dashas, sade sati, muhurat |
One more difference sits in the zodiac itself. Indian calendars follow the sidereal zodiac, so the Sun enters Makara around the middle of January, while Western astrology starts Capricorn near the December solstice. The full comparison of the two systems is on my page on Vedic and Western astrology. Here it is enough to know that a Western sun or moon sign is often one sign ahead of the Vedic one.
How to find your moon sign
- Collect your date of birth, the time as close as you can get it, and the town you were born in.
- Generate a sidereal (Lahiri) kundli. Your moon sign is written as Rashi or Chandra Rashi.
- Check whether the Moon changed sign on your birth day. If it did, your birth time decides which side you fall on, and an hour can matter.
- Note your nakshatra and pada as well. They sharpen the reading far more than the sign alone.
If you have no birth details at all, the old naming method can give you a stand-in, and the letter table is on my rashi by name page. I would only lean on it when nothing better exists.
What your moon sign tells me, and what it does not
The sign is only the first layer. I also look at whether you were born on a waxing or waning Moon, which grahas sit with it, and which ones aspect it. A Moon with Saturn often belongs to someone who carries feelings quietly and takes responsibility early. A Moon with Jupiter in a kendra from it forms Gajakesari yoga. Two people with the same moon sign can feel very different for these reasons.
What the moon sign does not give is the shape of your life events. Career, marriage and property sit in houses, and houses are counted from the lagna. That is why I read the lagna and the Moon side by side, never one alone.
Your moon sign and the next twelve months
Because transits are counted from the Moon, the big movements land differently for each sign. Jupiter enters Leo on 31 Oct 2026, so a Mesha Moon feels it in the 5th house and a Kumbha Moon in the 7th. Saturn moves into Aries on 3 Jun 2027, which begins sade sati for Vrishabha Moons and starts its final phase for Meena. Saturn then steps back into Pisces on 20 Oct 2027 and re-enters Aries on 23 Feb 2028, so the change does not settle at once.
Your Moon sign and the north-west of your home
Your moon sign tells me how you feel your life; your home decides much of where you feel it. Studying the two in one sitting adds timing to the house. Take a Vrishabha Moon heading into sade sati when Saturn enters Aries in June 2027. I would look at the north-west for rest and sleep, and at the west, Saturn’s side, for clutter or weight in the wrong place, and plan small changes before the period begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is moon sign more important than sun sign?
In Vedic astrology, yes, for most practical purposes. Timing tools such as the dasha sequence, sade sati and transit readings are counted from the Moon. The Sun still matters for vitality, father and authority, but it is read as one graha in the chart rather than as your main sign.
Can I know my moon sign without my birth time?
Usually. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so a date alone often gives the answer. The exception is a day when the Moon changed sign; then the time decides it. If you are near such a change, even a rough time window helps.
Why do different apps show different moon signs for me?
Most often one app is using the tropical zodiac of Western astrology and the other the sidereal zodiac used in India, which differ by about 24 degrees. A wrong time zone or a birth place left at a default city can also shift it. Use a sidereal, Lahiri setting with the correct place.
Is moon sign the same as rashi?
Yes. In Indian usage, your rashi, janma rashi or chandra rashi all mean the sign the Moon was in at birth. The one confusion is that some kundli printouts label the main lagna chart as the Rashi chart, which is a different thing.
What is the difference between moon sign and ascendant?
The ascendant, or lagna, is the sign rising in the east at your birth and changes about every two hours. It sets the houses and describes your body and circumstances. The moon sign describes your mind and drives timing. I read both together.
