Short answer: To find your rashi by name, take the first syllable of your name as it is said in Hindi or Sanskrit and match it to the letter table: Chu, La or A fall in Mesha, Ma or Mo in Simha. This name rashi is a shortcut; your true rashi is the sign your Moon occupied at birth.
Where the name letters come from
The letter list is not a modern invention. The sky is divided into 27 nakshatras, and each nakshatra is split into four quarters called padas, each 3°20′ wide. Every pada was given its own sound, which gives 108 syllables in all. Nine padas make up one rashi of 30°, so each rashi owns nine starting sounds.
At the naming ceremony, the family priest looked at the pada the Moon occupied at birth and suggested a name that began with that sound. In a family that followed this custom, the first syllable of the name and the Moon sign agree by design. That is the whole logic behind finding a rashi from a name. If you want the background on the 27 star groups themselves, my nakshatra guide covers them one by one.
The rashi also connects to your home. Every sign has a ruling planet, and every planet is given a direction in Vastu, so the rashi you find here points to a part of the house that I always check.
The rashi letter table
Say your name aloud the way your family says it, then find its opening sound below. I have added the Hindi letter where two different sounds share the same English spelling.
| Rashi (sign) | Starting syllables | Nakshatras it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Mesha (Aries) | Chu, Che, Cho, La, Li, Lu, Le, Lo, A | Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika pada 1 |
| Vrishabha (Taurus) | I, U, E, O, Va, Vi, Vu, Ve, Vo | Krittika padas 2 to 4, Rohini, Mrigashira padas 1 and 2 |
| Mithuna (Gemini) | Ka, Ki, Ku, Gha, Na (ङ), Chha, Ke, Ko, Ha | Mrigashira padas 3 and 4, Ardra, Punarvasu padas 1 to 3 |
| Karka (Cancer) | Hi, Hu, He, Ho, Da, Di, Du, De, Do (ड) | Punarvasu pada 4, Pushya, Ashlesha |
| Simha (Leo) | Ma, Mi, Mu, Me, Mo, Ta, Ti, Tu, Te (ट) | Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni pada 1 |
| Kanya (Virgo) | To (टो), Pa, Pi, Pu, Sha (ष), Na (ण), Tha (ठ), Pe, Po | Uttara Phalguni padas 2 to 4, Hasta, Chitra padas 1 and 2 |
| Tula (Libra) | Ra, Ri, Ru, Re, Ro, Ta, Ti, Tu, Te (त) | Chitra padas 3 and 4, Swati, Vishakha padas 1 to 3 |
| Vrishchika (Scorpio) | To (तो), Na, Ni, Nu, Ne, No, Ya, Yi, Yu | Vishakha pada 4, Anuradha, Jyeshtha |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Ye, Yo, Bha, Bhi, Bhu, Dha (ध), Pha, Dha (ढ), Bhe | Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha pada 1 |
| Makara (Capricorn) | Bho, Ja, Ji, Khi, Khu, Khe, Kho, Ga, Gi | Uttara Ashadha padas 2 to 4, Shravana, Dhanishta padas 1 and 2 |
| Kumbha (Aquarius) | Gu, Ge, Go, Sa, Si, Su, Se, So, Da (द) | Dhanishta padas 3 and 4, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada padas 1 to 3 |
| Meena (Pisces) | Di, Du, Tha (थ), Jha, Na (ञ), De, Do, Cha, Chi | Purva Bhadrapada pada 4, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati |
Some panchangs write the four Shravana sounds as Ju, Je, Jo and Kha instead of Khi, Khu, Khe and Kho. Either spelling lands in Makara, because Shravana sits wholly inside that sign.
Letters that confuse people, and how I settle them
- T and D. Hindi has a hard and a soft version of each. A name that opens with त, like Tanvi, falls in Tula; one that opens with the hard ट belongs to Simha. Most D names are written with द, which puts them in Kumbha (Da) or Meena (Di, Du, De, Do). The Karka sounds are the hard ड.
- N. Nearly every name that starts with न, such as Neha, Nikhil or Naveen, falls in Vrishchika. The other Na sounds in the table (ङ, ण, ञ) almost never begin a name.
- Sh. The ष sound is listed under Kanya. Names written with श, like Shreya or Shankar, are treated differently by different panchangs, and many read them as Sa under Kumbha. I tell you which convention I am using before reading anything from it.
- B and V in Bengali. Bengali uses one letter, ব, for both sounds, so Bikash and Vikas are the same name. Read with its Sanskrit sound, a Bengali Bikram is Vikram and falls in Vrishabha, while a Bhaskar stays in Dhanu.
- Ch. Chu, Che and Cho sit in Mesha, Cha and Chi in Meena, and the aspirated Chha in Mithuna.
- Vowels. Names starting with A, including Aa names like Aarav, go to Mesha. Names starting with I, U, E or O go to Vrishabha.
Name rashi or Moon sign: which one counts
If you were named by your pada, the two match and there is nothing to decide. Many people were not. They were named after a grandparent, a deity or simply a name the parents liked, and then the rashi from the name and the rashi from the sky can be completely different signs.
When they differ, I go with the birth chart. Your Moon sign is what Jyotish uses for the dasha sequence, for sade sati and for reading transits, and I explain why on my moon sign page. The name rashi still has a place, mainly when no reliable birth details exist.
| What you want to do | Which rashi to use |
|---|---|
| Read your monthly or yearly rashiphal | Moon sign from your birth chart |
| Check whether sade sati applies to you | Moon sign from your birth chart |
| Match two kundlis with birth details known | Moon nakshatra and rashi of both people |
| No birth date or time available at all | Name rashi, as a stand-in |
| Pick the first letter for a newborn | The baby’s own Moon nakshatra pada |
For matching, the name method is a fallback, not the rule. A proper kundli matching starts from each person’s Moon nakshatra, and a full kundli analysis goes well beyond the rashi to the lagna, the houses and the running period.
Choosing a baby’s name by rashi
For a newborn, I work out the Moon’s nakshatra and pada from the birth time and place and give the family the starting syllable for that pada. If the family does not like any name with that sound, I give the other syllables of the same rashi, which keeps the name in the right sign. People who later read their own name numerology are often surprised how differently the two systems treat the same name; they measure different things, so both can be right.
From your rashi to a room in your house
A rashi is the starting point of a chart, not the whole of it. Each rashi’s lord also has a direction in Vastu, which gives me a practical link between the sign and the house you live in. Take a Karka Moon: its lord is the Moon, which governs the north-west. If that person feels unsettled at home, I would check the north-west of the home and the Moon’s condition in the chart before suggesting anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is my rashi if my name starts with S?
Names that open with Sa, Si, Su, Se or So fall in Kumbha (Aquarius) in the traditional letter table. Names starting with Sh are less settled: the ष sound is listed under Kanya, while many panchangs read श names like Sa under Kumbha. Your birth Moon sign settles it.
Is name rashi the same as moon sign?
Only when you were named by the old custom, using the syllable of the nakshatra pada your Moon was in at birth. If your name was chosen any other way, the two can be different signs, and for predictions the Moon sign from your birth chart is the one to use.
Can I find my rashi without my date of birth?
Yes, the name method exists for exactly that situation. It gives you a working rashi when no birth details are known. Treat it as an estimate, though. If the date and even an approximate time can be traced, the Moon sign worked out from them is far more dependable.
Should I change my name to match my rashi?
I do not advise it. A name that does not begin with your rashi syllable does not harm the chart; it only means the naming custom was not followed. What shapes your life in Jyotish is the chart itself and the period you are running, not the first letter of your name.
Which rashi is used for marriage matching, name or birth?
Birth, whenever the details are known. Guna milan counts points from the Moon nakshatra and Moon sign of both people. Name rashi is used only as a fallback when one person’s birth date or time cannot be found, and I always say so in the reading.
