Short answer: A lagna kundli is the birth chart drawn with the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, placed in the 1st house. Every other house is counted from it, so it decides which part of life each planet affects. The lagna changes about every two hours, which is why the birth time matters.
Lagna kundli and Chandra kundli
Most kundli printouts carry two small charts that look alike. The lagna kundli puts the rising sign in the 1st house. The Chandra kundli puts your moon sign in the 1st house instead. Same planets, same signs, but the houses are counted from a different starting point.
I use the lagna chart for events and circumstances: body, career, marriage, property, money. I use the Moon chart for the mind and for timing transits. When both charts point to the same result, I am much more confident in what I tell you.
The lagna links to the home too. The 1st house sits on the eastern horizon in the chart, and the east is where Vastu wants light coming in, so with a weak lagna lord I pay closer attention to how open and bright the east side of the home is.
How to find the lagna on your printout
- North Indian chart (diamond shape): the top middle box is always the 1st house. The number written in it is the sign: 1 for Mesha, 2 for Vrishabha, through to 12 for Meena. Houses run anticlockwise from there.
- South Indian chart (square grid): the signs stay fixed in their boxes, and the lagna is marked with “La”, “Asc” or a diagonal line.
- East Indian chart, which many Bengali families use: the signs are also fixed, and the lagna is marked separately.
The 12 houses, read from the lagna
| House | Main matters | A question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, temperament | How do I meet the world? |
| 2nd | Family, savings, speech, food | Will my savings grow? |
| 3rd | Effort, courage, younger siblings, short travel | Should I start this on my own? |
| 4th | Mother, home, vehicles, inner peace | When should I buy a house? |
| 5th | Children, intellect, creativity, past merit | Will studies go well? |
| 6th | Debts, disputes, illness, daily service | Will this conflict at work settle? |
| 7th | Spouse, partnerships, contracts | When will I marry? |
| 8th | Sudden events, inheritance, research, hidden matters | Why did this change come so suddenly? |
| 9th | Father, dharma, teachers, fortune, long travel | Is this a lucky period? |
| 10th | Career, status, public work | Is this the year to switch jobs? |
| 11th | Gains, income, friends, wishes fulfilled | Will income rise? |
| 12th | Expenses, losses, foreign lands, sleep, release | Will I settle abroad? |
For the two questions I get most, I have separate pages: work is read from the 10th house and I explain it in my career astrology guide, while marriage starts from the 7th.
The lagna lord: where your attention goes
The planet that rules your rising sign is your lagna lord, and its house shows where much of your life’s effort gets spent. A lagna lord in the 10th usually belongs to someone whose identity is tied to work. In the 4th, home and family carry that weight. In the 12th, distance, foreign links or a quiet inner life often matter more.
| Lagna | Lagna lord |
|---|---|
| Mesha, Vrishchika | Mars |
| Vrishabha, Tula | Venus |
| Mithuna, Kanya | Mercury |
| Karka | Moon |
| Simha | Sun |
| Dhanu, Meena | Jupiter |
| Makara, Kumbha | Saturn |
Planets in the houses, and house lords
A house is read in two ways. First, the planets sitting in it: Jupiter in the 5th, for example, is a classic sign of a sharp mind and support through children. Second, its lord, the planet that rules the sign on that house, and where that lord has gone. A 4th lord placed in the 11th often links property with gains. An empty house is not a weak house; its lord carries the story.
When the birth time is not certain
The rising sign changes about every two hours, faster for some signs than others, so a time written down loosely can still be right for the lagna, or can be on the edge. If your lagna sits in the first or last couple of degrees of a sign, I check it against events you already know, such as the year you started work or married, before reading the houses. I will tell you plainly if the time cannot be settled.
Vedic lagna and the Western ascendant
The ascendant in Western astrology and the lagna are the same idea, the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. The zodiac they use differs, so your Vedic lagna is often the sign before your Western rising sign. For the step-by-step reading I do once the lagna is fixed, see kundli analysis.
Your 4th house and the home you live in
Your lagna kundli tells me which house rules what in your life; your floor plan tells me where those matters play out. The 4th house is home itself, so I always look at it next to the plan. Say your 4th lord is Saturn and Saturn’s dasha is running: I would study the west of the home first, keep heavy storage there in good order, and keep the north-east light before you think about renovating.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between lagna kundli and rashi kundli?
The lagna kundli counts houses from the rising sign. A Chandra or Moon kundli counts them from your moon sign. Confusingly, many printouts call the main lagna chart the Rashi chart, meaning the D1 sign chart. Check which sign sits in the 1st house to tell them apart.
Which is more important, lagna or moon sign?
For life events, the lagna, because houses are counted from it. For the mind and for timing transits and sade sati, the moon sign. Classical practice reads both, and I give extra weight to results that show up from both starting points.
Can I know my lagna without an exact birth time?
Sometimes. If your time is known within an hour and the lagna sits well inside a sign, the answer is usually safe. If the lagna falls near the edge of a sign, a small error can change it, and I check it against known life events.
Is lagna the same as ascendant or rising sign?
Yes, it is the same point: the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The difference is the zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so your lagna is often one sign behind the rising sign a Western chart gives you.
What does an empty 1st house in the lagna kundli mean?
Nothing worrying. An empty house is read through its sign and its lord. With nine grahas and twelve houses, some houses are always empty. The lagna lord’s placement and strength tell me far more about you than whether a planet sits in the 1st.
