Short answer: A nakshatra is one of 27 star divisions of the zodiac, each 13°20′ wide with four padas. Your birth nakshatra is where the Moon stood when you were born. Its lord sets the first Mahadasha of your life, it drives four of the eight kootas in matching, and its pada gives your naming letter.

What a nakshatra actually is

The zodiac is a circle of 360 degrees. Vedic astrology cuts it into 12 rashis, and then more finely into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each. Every nakshatra has four padas of 3°20′, so one rashi always holds nine padas, which is two and a quarter stars.

Your janma nakshatra, or birth star, is the one the Moon was passing through when you were born. The rashi gives me the wide band of sky; the nakshatra narrows it to a small stretch with its own lord, deity and temper. If you are not sure of your Moon’s sign yet, my note on the moon sign explains how it is found.

A planet’s star does not stay on paper. The way I read a home, each graha also governs a direction, so when someone is born in Pushya, a Saturn star, I quietly keep the west side of their house in mind as well.

Why I begin a reading with your birth star

Three parts of a reading start here. First, the Vimshottari dasha. The lord of your birth star decides which Mahadasha you were born into and how much of it was still left. A child born early in Rohini begins life in a long Moon period of ten years; one born at the tail of Ashwini has only a small slice of Ketu’s seven years before Venus takes over for twenty.

Second, compatibility. In kundli matching, four of the eight kootas, tara, yoni, gana and nadi, are counted from the two birth stars. Third, the naming letter: the pada of your star gives the syllable many families still use for the first letter of a child’s name.

Letters differ a little between regional panchangs, especially for Shravana and Purva Ashadha. For finding your rashi from the first letter of a name, use my rashi by name page; this table is about the star itself.

Nine lords, three rounds

The lords repeat in a fixed cycle of nine: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Run that cycle three times and you cover all 27. So Ashwini, Magha and Mula, the first star of each round, all belong to Ketu, and Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati, the last of each round, all belong to Mercury. Where a Mercury star meets a Ketu star, a water sign hands over to a fire sign; this junction is called gandanta. You can read about the nine grahas themselves on my navagraha page.

Gana is the temperament of the star: deva is gentle and giving, manushya is mixed and practical, rakshasa is intense and independent. Rakshasa sounds alarming but only describes a strong will; in matching, gana is one koota worth six of the 36 points.

A few things I keep in mind from my readings

  • Pushya is loved for starting work, buying and learning, yet tradition leaves it out of marriage dates. Good for one thing does not mean good for everything.
  • Families often worry about a Mula or Ashlesha birth. I explain what the old shanti rituals were for, and I do not treat the star as a reason for fear.
  • When birth falls close to the edge of a star, a few minutes change the dasha dates. I then check the timeline against events you remember before trusting it.

What your nakshatra can tell you, and what it cannot

Your birth star describes how you respond, what comforts you and which period you started life in. It does not settle career or marriage by itself. Those sit in houses counted from the lagna. When the question is work, I move from the star to the 10th house and its lord, the way I describe in career astrology. When it is about a wedding, the 7th house and the running dasha take over, which is the ground covered in marriage timing. A full kundli analysis puts all of these in one picture.

Your birth star and the side of the home its lord rules

From your nakshatra I learn which planet has led your life since birth, and which one leads it now. Reading the home in the same sitting shows me where that planet lives in your space. Say you were born in Hasta, a Moon star, and are now running Saturn’s mahadasha. I would check the north-west, the Moon’s side, for a cramped or neglected bedroom, and the west, Saturn’s side, for heavy clutter or a cut in the plot, then decide which one to fix first.

Your star, pada and dasha are all covered in my ₹1,499 astrology call, and that is a good place to start. If you would like the birth chart and the house studied together, with remedies placed by date, my chart and home reading does exactly that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my nakshatra?

You need your date, exact time and place of birth. The Moon’s longitude at that moment decides the star and the pada. Since the Moon changes stars about once a day, a wrong time near a boundary can give the wrong one, so I check the edge cases by hand.

Which nakshatra is the best?

None is best in every way. Pushya is favoured for new beginnings, Rohini is linked with growth and comfort, and Ashwini with speed. Each star has a field where it shines and a field where it needs care. I read your star through your whole chart, not by a ranking.

What is the difference between rashi and nakshatra?

There are 12 rashis of 30 degrees and 27 nakshatras of 13°20′. The rashi is the broad sign your Moon was in; the nakshatra is the narrower star inside it. Dashas and most of the matching points come from the nakshatra, while houses and transits use signs.

Should a baby’s name start with the nakshatra letter?

Many families follow it, and it is a lovely custom. The syllable comes from the pada of the birth star. It is a tradition, not a rule that decides the child’s future, so if you prefer another name, I would not worry about it. I go through the rest of a newborn’s chart on my child birth chart page.

Is a Mula or gandanta birth something to fear?

No. These are points where the old texts asked for extra care and a simple shanti ritual. I read the Moon there more slowly and look at the rest of the chart. Plenty of people born in these stars lead steady, happy lives.
