Warehouse Vastu: Stock, Loading Bay and Cash Desk in a Godown

Warehouse Vastu: Stock, Loading Bay and Cash Desk in a Godown cover

Short answer: For warehouse Vastu, and godown Vastu is the same thing, keep the heaviest stock in the south-west, goods waiting for dispatch in the north-west, and the north-east as open as the floor allows. Trucks should load from the north-west or west, the cash desk sits in the north facing north or east, and anything inflammable stays in the south-east. In a rented godown most fixes mean shifting stock, not breaking walls.

A warehouse is not a small factory

People often send me a godown plan and ask me to apply the factory rules. The gate and electrical corner carry over, and my factory layout Vastu guide covers them. But a warehouse has no production line. It has weight sitting still for weeks, goods moving in and out daily, and usually one small cabin where money is handled. So I read a godown with three questions: where does the weight sit, which way does stock travel, and where does the cash live.

Where to stack stock by weight and type

Think of the floor as a slope of load, heaviest at the south-west and lightest at the north-east.

  • South-west and south: slow-moving, heavy items. Cement bags, steel, tiles, spare parts, full pallets on the tallest racks, and buffer stock you rarely touch.
  • West: medium-weight goods and bulk cartons that move every few days.
  • North-west: packed orders and goods about to leave. This is the zone of movement, so stock here tends to get picked and sent on time. Never park dead stock in this corner.
  • North and east: light items, samples, packing material, the lowest racks.
  • North-east: as open as you can manage. A drinking water point or walkway is fine. Tall racks, scrap and damaged returns are not.

Loading bay, gate and dispatch flow

The main gate is best on the north or east side, away from the corners. If your godown sits on a south or east road, my south-facing and east-facing factory guides show which half of that side to use, and the same logic holds for a warehouse.

The loading bay is a separate question. I like the shutter for outgoing trucks in the north-west, or the west if that is where trucks can turn. Incoming goods can be received on the west or south and moved straight into the heavy racks. The aim is a loop: goods enter, settle in the south-west, move north-west as orders come, and leave. When one shutter does both jobs, mark two lanes inside so stock never crosses back over itself.

Office cabin and cash desk in a godown

An owner or manager who sits in the godown should be in the south-west part, facing north or east, with a solid wall behind. The cash desk or billing counter does better in the north, the person facing north or east and the cash box opening towards the north. Keep the cabin out of the north-west; Vastu ties that corner to restlessness, the last thing you want at the money desk. A glass cabin in the dead centre of the floor is a common godown mistake; the centre should stay open.

Fire risk, inflammable stock and cold storage

Paints, oils, solvents, gas cylinders, cotton and paper bales belong in the south-east, with the main switchboard, inverter and any diesel generator. Keep them away from the north-east and north, the water zones. Here Vastu and safety sense agree, but your fire licence, extinguisher spacing and exit rules always come first. If a fire officer wants something elsewhere, put it there.

Cold storage chambers are heavy and closed, so the west or south-west suits them. The compressors and condenser units run hot, so they go on the south-east side or outside the south-east wall. Do not run a cold chamber across the north-east corner.

Fixing a rented godown without demolition

Most warehouse owners I speak to rent, so moving walls is out. Warehouse Vastu is mostly about placement, and placement is cheap to change:

  • Re-slot racks so heavy stock moves south-west and the north-east bays get lighter.
  • Shift the billing desk and turn the chair.
  • Move scrap, broken pallets and returns from the north-east to the south-west or a yard corner.
  • Use colour and lighting near a badly placed gate, and keep the entry clean and bright.

More on this approach is on Vastu without owning the property.

Frequently asked questions

Is godown Vastu different from warehouse Vastu?

No. Godown is simply the word most Indian traders use. The same rules apply to a small godown behind a shop and a large logistics warehouse.

Which direction is best for a godown entrance?

North or east for the main gate, off the corners. On a south or west road, which half of that side you use matters more than the facing itself.

Where should the heaviest stock go?

South-west first, then south and west. Keep the north-east lightest, with low racks or open floor.

Can you check my rented godown online?

Yes. Send a floor sketch with the gate, shutters, racks and cabin marked, a compass reading at the gate and a few photos. I work from that.

What does a warehouse Vastu consultation cost?

Warehouse and other industrial work is quoted on request, based on the size of the building and the scope. A site visit is also on request.

For larger sites, my industrial Vastu consultation covers the whole plot, and a shop or office attached to the godown falls under commercial Vastu. Still looking for land? An online Plot Vastu check is ₹1,499, report in 48 hours. See fees on the pricing page, book a consultation, or call or WhatsApp me on +91 74838 52618, 9 AM to 8 PM, all seven days.
