Short answer: The 7th house in astrology is the house of marriage, the spouse and every one-to-one partnership, including business partners and contracts. I read four things in it: the sign on its cusp, any planets sitting there, where its lord has gone, and which planets aspect it. The Navamsa (D9) chart then confirms or questions that picture.
What the 7th house covers
In Sanskrit texts the 7th is called kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse. That is the meaning most people search for, but the house is wider than marriage. It is the house of the other person: anyone you sit across a table from as an equal.
- The spouse and the nature of married life.
- Business partners and anyone you sign an agreement with.
- Clients and the public, since dealing with people one at a time falls here.
- Travel and life away from your birthplace, in some classical readings.
- A maraka house: along with the 2nd, old texts study it for health timing. I mention this only so the word does not frighten you if you read it elsewhere. It is a technical label, not a prediction.
The 7th sits exactly opposite the Lagna. Whatever the 1st house says about you, the 7th describes the person who completes the picture. That is why I never read one without the other.
A house plan echoes this. If the Lagna is the east, the 7th is the west, and Vastu keeps the south-west for the couple’s bedroom. The same bedroom can suit one marriage and unsettle another, depending on the two charts.
The four layers I read, in order
Most confusion online comes from reading a single placement and stopping there. In a session I go through the house in a fixed order, so nothing is judged in isolation.
- The sign on the 7th. A fire sign there often describes a direct, active partner; a water sign, someone more emotional and private. This is the colour, not the verdict.
- Planets in the 7th. Each planet changes the house in its own way. I have written separate pages for the common ones, listed in the table below.
- The 7th lord. Where the ruler of the 7th sits shows where marriage and partnership get their direction. A 7th lord in the 10th, for example, often ties a partnership to work.
- Aspects. Every planet aspects the house opposite it. Jupiter also looks at the 5th and 9th from itself, Saturn at the 3rd and 10th, and Mars at the 4th and 8th. So a planet sitting far from the 7th can still shape it.
Planets in the 7th house at a glance
This is a starting point only. The sign, the lord and the running dasha can change the result a great deal.

The karakas: Venus and Jupiter
Apart from the house itself, two planets carry the theme of marriage. Venus is the natural significator of the spouse and of married happiness in every chart. Traditional texts also read Jupiter as the significator of the husband in a woman’s chart. If the 7th house looks troubled but Venus and Jupiter are well placed, I weigh the chart very differently from one where all three are under strain.
Why the Navamsa decides the final word
The D9 chart divides each sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes. It is the chart I trust most for marriage, because it shows how a planet actually behaves once you are living with the results. A Venus that looks weak in the birth chart and strong in the D9 usually does better than people expect. I explain how to read it on my page on the Navamsa (D9) chart.
Timing comes from the dasha, not the house
A good 7th house does not mean an early wedding, and a difficult one does not mean no wedding. When things happen depends on the Mahadasha and Antardasha you are running, and on whether Jupiter and Saturn in transit touch the 7th house or its lord. My guide on when marriage tends to happen in a chart goes into those windows.
A quick checklist before you call your 7th house weak
- Is the 7th lord well placed, even if a malefic sits in the house?
- Does Jupiter aspect the 7th or its lord?
- How are Venus and the D9 Lagna placed?
- Is the difficult planet in its own or exalted sign?
- What dasha are you in, and what dasha comes next?
If three of these five look reasonable, the chart is rarely as bleak as an app report makes it sound. When two charts are being compared for a match, the same checks apply to both, which is the heart of proper kundli matching.
The 7th house and the bedroom you share
A 7th house reading tells you about the partner, the timing and the quality of married life. Looking at your home alongside it adds the daily setting of that marriage: where the couple sleeps, which way the bed faces, and whether the west and south-west of the house are used well for your particular chart.
A simple case: a 7th lord placed in the 12th, the house of the bed and of loss, makes me pay attention to the south-west bedroom and anything that pulls its weight away, such as a toilet or a large opening. Changes stay practical and timed to your dasha. The ₹1,499 reading is the light first step, and my consultation on your chart and your home is the complete one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does an empty 7th house mean?
Nothing bad. Most charts have several empty houses. When no planet sits in the 7th, I read the house through its lord, the planets that aspect it, Venus and the Navamsa. Many settled, happy marriages come from charts with an empty 7th house.
Which planet is best in the 7th house?
Jupiter and a well placed Venus are usually the easiest, and Mercury often suits business partners. Still, the sign matters as much as the planet. Saturn in Libra, for example, can give a steadier marriage than a weak Venus in Virgo.
Does the 7th house show love marriage or arranged marriage?
Not by itself. Love marriage is read from links between the 5th house of romance and the 7th, often through their lords, along with Venus and Rahu. The 7th shows the partnership; the 5th shows how it may begin.
Is the 7th house also about business partnerships?
Yes. Anyone you enter an agreement with as an equal falls under the 7th. When people ask whether to take a business partner, I read the 7th and its lord along with the 10th house of work and the 11th of gains.
Can the 7th house show where my spouse comes from?
Some classical rules use the sign on the 7th and its lord to suggest a direction or a distance. I treat these as hints only. A move abroad or a partner from far away shows more clearly through the 12th house and Rahu.
