Short answer: The 10th house in astrology is the house of karma in its working sense: career, status, authority and how the public sees you. It is read from its sign, the planets in it, its lord, and the D10 (Dashamsa) chart. It describes the kind of work you are seen for, while the dasha decides when that work rises.
Karma bhava: the house of action
In the old texts the 10th is called karma bhava. Karma here does not mean fate. It means action: what you do in the world and what you become known for. It is the highest point of the chart, the place where the Sun stands at noon, so it carries ideas of visibility, rank and authority.
- Profession and the way you earn a reputation.
- Authority: bosses, government, and your own rise to positions of responsibility.
- Public image and the respect you hold in your field.
- Achievements that outlive a single job.
- In some traditions, the father’s status, read along with the 9th house.
This page explains the house itself. If you want your own work question answered, from a job change to starting a business, my career astrology service is the place to start. For a real example, read how I worked with an interior designer who felt stuck in her career.
That noon Sun also gives the 10th house a direction: the south. So the south side of a home or office, and whether your desk has a solid wall behind it, belongs to the same theme of career and standing.
Three ways to count the 10th
I read the 10th from the Lagna first, since that is the body of the chart. Then I read the 10th from the Moon, which shows how you feel about your work and where the mind wants to go. Some astrologers also count the 10th from the Sun for status. When all three point to the same kind of work, I give that theme a lot of weight.
Why difficult planets often do well here
The 10th is a kendra, a pillar of the chart, and also an upachaya house, one of the four houses (3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th) where results grow with effort and time. That is why Saturn, Mars and Rahu, which can be hard elsewhere, often give strong careers from the 10th. The Sun and Mars also gain directional strength in this house.
Each planet in the 10th house
| Planet in the 10th | Kind of work it leans towards | How the rise usually comes |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Administration, government, leadership roles | Through recognition from those above you |
| Moon | Public-facing work, care, food, hospitality | Changes with the phases of life; popularity |
| Mars | Engineering, defence, surgery, property, sport | Through competition and bold moves |
| Mercury | Writing, trade, accounts, software, training | Through skill and adaptability |
| Jupiter | Advisory, law, finance, teaching, counselling | Through trust and reputation |
| Venus | Design, media, arts, luxury, beauty, hospitality | Through taste and relationships |
| Saturn | Large organisations, manufacturing, labour, public service | Slowly, and it holds once earned |
| Rahu | Technology, foreign firms, media, new industries | Suddenly, sometimes unconventionally |
| Ketu | Research, specialist or behind-the-scenes work | Through depth rather than visibility |
Rahu here deserves its own discussion, because it is one of the most searched career placements. I cover it on Rahu in the 10th house.
Where the 10th lord goes
The ruler of the 10th shows where your work finds its outlet. A few common examples:
- 10th lord in the 1st: self-made; your name becomes your work.
- In the 2nd or 11th: work and income are closely tied; often good earning capacity.
- In the 5th: creative work, teaching, advising or speculation.
- In the 7th: clients, partnerships or trade.
- In the 9th: a dharmic or teaching career; mentors matter.
- In the 12th: foreign companies, travel or work behind the scenes.
The D10 chart
The Dashamsa divides each sign into ten parts of 3 degrees. For odd signs the count starts from the same sign; for even signs it starts from the ninth sign from it. Because the slices are so small, the D10 needs a reliable birth time, and a few minutes of error can change it. When the time is good, it shows how career promises in the birth chart actually play out, and I check it before giving any firm view.
Timing, not just talent
A strong 10th house describes potential. Promotions, switches and new ventures arrive when the dasha connects to the 10th house or its lord, and when Saturn or Jupiter transit over it. If you are curious which periods in your chart touch the 10th, a dasha analysis sets them out year by year.
Your 10th house and the desk you work from
A 10th house reading shows the kind of work you are seen for and when it rises. Bringing in your workspace, at home or in the office, shows whether the room you actually work from backs that promise. The south, the 10th house’s own direction, and the place of your desk matter most here.
For instance, if the Sun is your 10th lord and its period is starting, I would look at the east for light and openness and the south for a solid wall behind your chair, and suggest simple changes in seating and use. The ₹1,499 reading is the easy first step. For a career question that includes your office layout, my Astro-Vastu consultation covers both.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my 10th house is empty?
An empty 10th is very common and does not mean a weak career. I read it through the 10th lord, the planets aspecting the house, the 10th from the Moon, and the D10. Many successful people have no planet in the 10th.
Which planet is best in the 10th house?
The Sun and Mars gain directional strength there, and Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury often give steady careers. The best planet depends on your Lagna, because the same planet rules different houses for each rising sign.
Does the 10th house show government jobs?
The Sun is the main significator of government. A strong Sun linked with the 10th house or its lord, often with the 6th house of service, is a classical sign of government or public-sector work.
What is the difference between the 10th house and the 6th house for career?
The 10th shows profession, status and reputation. The 6th shows daily work, service, employment and competition. A strong 6th often suits a salaried role, while a strong 10th points to a position of visibility or authority.
How accurate does my birth time need to be for the D10?
Quite accurate, within a few minutes. Each D10 division covers only 3 degrees, and the rising degree moves through that in roughly twelve minutes. If your time is uncertain, I rely more on the birth chart and the Moon chart.
