Short answer: Foreign settlement astrology reads the 12th house of foreign lands, the 9th of long-distance travel and higher study, and the 4th of your homeland. Links between them, Rahu’s role and moveable signs suggest a life abroad, while your dasha shows when a move is better supported. The chart shows tendencies; visas, skills and choices still decide.
Three questions people bring me
Will I go abroad at all? If I go, will it be for study, for a posting, or for good? And when? In Bengaluru the version I hear most is about an onsite move turning into permanent residence, or a spouse’s job taking the family overseas. The chart speaks to each of these, as leanings and windows.
The houses that point overseas
- 12th house: other countries, a life far from home, and also expenses. A strong 12th lord, or one linked to the lagna, 9th or 10th, often appears in charts of people who settle abroad.
- 9th house: long-distance travel, higher education and fortune. A 9th and 12th connection is a classic pattern for study abroad.
- 4th house: your homeland, mother and house. When the 4th lord sits in the 12th, or Saturn or Rahu press on the 4th, people often live away from where they were born.
- 7th house: foreign trade and business travel, and sometimes a spouse from another place.
- 10th house and the D10: whether work is what takes you there.
Rahu, Saturn and moveable signs
Rahu is the planet of the unfamiliar. Rahu in the 12th, 9th or 7th, or a Rahu dasha, often coincides with a move to a new country or culture. Saturn favours long stays built on steady work far from home. I also check the moveable signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn: when they hold the lagna, the 4th or the 12th, or carry the lagna lord, life tends to involve more movement.
Rahu has a direction as well. In Vastu it rules the south-west, so when a Rahu period is pushing someone abroad, I also look at the south-west of the home they live in now, since a cut or open corner there can make settling harder.
Rahu enters Capricorn on 5 Dec 2026 and stays there for about eighteen months. If your 9th, 12th or 4th house falls in Capricorn, that stretch is worth reading carefully, because it often stirs plans connected to those houses.

Away from the birthplace does not always mean another country. Sometimes the chart describes a move from one Indian city to another, and I say so when that is the more likely reading.
Timing the visa, the offer and the move
For timing I look at the dasha of the 12th lord, the 9th lord or Rahu, and the transits of Saturn and Jupiter over those houses. Saturn enters Aries on 3 Jun 2027, goes back to Pisces on 20 Oct 2027 and returns to Aries on 23 Feb 2028. A back-and-forth like that often shows up as plans that start, pause and restart, which is useful to know before you resign or sell a flat.
A chart cannot approve a visa. Employer, paperwork and the rules of the country decide that. What the chart can do is show when your own effort is better supported, and when it makes sense to keep a backup ready. A chart reading shows whether the move is a visit, a stay or a settlement, and when the support is strongest. Looking at the home beside it helps with what people forget: the house left behind, the house you move into, and which zones need attention during the change.
