Short answer: A child birth chart, or baby kundli, is cast from the date, exact time and place your child was born. When I read one for parents, I look at the lagna, the Moon and its nakshatra, the dasha the child starts life in, and how the chart shows temperament and learning style. It is a guide to understanding your child, not a verdict on their future, and I never read it to frighten a family.
Why parents ask for a baby kundli
Usually the first reason is the name. Many families want the starting syllable from the baby’s nakshatra before the naming ceremony, and the method for that is on my rashi by name page. The second reason comes a little later, once the child has a personality of their own. Why is she so sensitive to noise? Why does he only learn by doing? Parents want a way to understand the child in front of them, and a chart can give them a useful language for it.
Getting the birth time right
The time matters more than anything else. Take it from the hospital record or the discharge summary rather than from memory, because a few minutes can move the rising sign. If the record and the family’s memory disagree, send me both. For a newborn there are no life events yet to test the chart against, so I tell you plainly which parts I can read with confidence and which depend on the exact minute.
The place is the town of birth, not where the family lives now. A baby born in Kolkata and raised in Bengaluru has a Kolkata chart.
What I read first in a child’s chart
- The lagna and its lord. This is the child’s basic nature and physical make-up, how they meet the world. If you want to know how the ascendant chart works, see lagna kundli.
- The Moon. In a young child the Moon says a lot: mood, comfort, how they settle and what unsettles them. Their Moon sign is also what most rashifal uses.
- The birth nakshatra. The Moon’s star gives the naming syllable, and it also decides which Vimshottari dasha the child is born into. I explain that star on nakshatra.
- The first two dashas. Knowing which planet’s period runs through the early years tells parents what themes to expect, whether a quieter, inward stretch or an active, outgoing one.
Temperament and the way a child learns
This is where the reading becomes practical. Mercury shows how a child takes in words and numbers. The Moon shows emotional comfort. Mars shows drive, and sometimes a short temper. The 5th house shows intelligence and the kind of play a child enjoys. Put together, these give you hints: a child who needs quiet to focus, one who learns faster when moving, one who needs praise before correction. When the school years arrive and stream choice comes up, I read the chart again with that question, as I describe on education astrology.
The navamsa, or D9, needs a very accurate birth time and is mostly used for marriage, so I seldom lean on it for a baby. If you are curious, my navamsa chart page explains why.
What I will not do
I will not predict a child’s lifespan, say a baby is unlucky for a parent, or hand you a list of dangers. These claims cause real worry and do no good. Some relatives mention gand mool nakshatras or a “heavy” birth star and the family comes to me anxious. I explain what the tradition actually says, and that a simple shanti pooja, if your family wants one, is a custom and not a cure for something wrong with the child. Nothing in a baby’s chart is a sentence.
For remedies I keep things gentle. I rarely suggest a gemstone for a young child. A mantra a parent can chant, or a small act of charity on a particular day, is usually all I would offer, and only if it fits your family.
Frequently asked questions
Which time should I use for my baby’s kundli?
Use the time on the hospital record. If you have more than one time, send all of them and tell me where each came from, and I will say how much it changes the chart.
Can a baby’s chart tell me their career?
It shows inclinations, not a fixed path. I can tell you what tends to come easily and what may need patience. The real choices come years later, and I would read the chart again at that time.
Is it bad if my child was born in a gand mool nakshatra?
No. It is a traditional label, and some families do a shanti pooja for peace of mind. It does not mean harm to the child or the parents, and I explain it calmly in the reading.
How do I choose a name from the birth chart?
I give you the syllable from the Moon’s nakshatra and pada, and the other syllables of the same rashi if you need more choice. You then pick a name the family loves.
How much does a child birth chart reading cost?
It is ₹1,499 for one kundli and a 45-minute call, with written notes within 48 hours. Each sibling is a separate kundli.
