Short answer: 2027 has 12 Purnimas and 13 Amavasyas. The first full Moon is Pausha Purnima on Friday 22 January, and the first new Moon is Margashirsha Amavasya on Thursday 7 January. The last are Margashirsha Purnima on 13 December and Amavasya on 27 December. Both tables below give the tithi start and end in IST. Dates follow the sunrise at New Delhi and can shift by a day in another city, so check the times against your own sunrise.

* Magha Purnima does not touch any sunrise at New Delhi: it starts after sunrise on 20 February and ends before sunrise on 21 February. Panchangs differ on this one. Most observe it on Saturday 20 February, the day the tithi begins, but please check your local panchang. The faint lunar eclipse in the early hours of 21 February falls on this full Moon, and my eclipse 2027 page has its times.
Night festivals go by when the tithi is present after dark, not at sunrise, so Holika Dahan, Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima can sit on the earlier date in your panchang. Many families keep the Purnima vrat that way too.
Amavasya 2027 dates with start and end times
Here the naming does change. In the amanta calendar the month closes on Amavasya, while the purnimanta calendar followed in most of North India gives the same Amavasya the next month’s name. So the Pausha Amavasya below is the Magha (Mauni) Amavasya of a North Indian calendar.
| Amavasya | Date (sunrise day) | Tithi begins (IST) | Tithi ends (IST) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Margashirsha | Thu 7 Jan | Wed 6 Jan, 11:14 pm | Fri 8 Jan, 1:54 am | |

The Lakshmi Puja evening of Diwali depends on which evening holds the tithi, so take that from your panchang.
Ancestral rites follow a different clock. Shraddha and tarpan are done in the afternoon, so they go by the day on which Amavasya covers the afternoon. When the tithi ends early in the morning, as it does on 4 July, 30 September and 28 November, the afternoon belongs to the day before, and tarpan often moves to 3 July, 29 September and 27 November. For Mahalaya in particular, confirm with your family priest.
What Purnima is kept for
The full Moon is the Moon at its strongest, and in Jyotish the Moon is the mind, so Purnima is a day for steadiness and thanks.
- Purnima vrat: a fast or a single meal, broken after offering water to the Moon at moonrise.
- Satyanarayan katha: many homes hold it on Purnima, usually in the evening, with the whole family present. It also suits a new house or a new job.
- Snan and daan: a bath in a river or at home before sunrise, then giving food, clothes or grain.
What Amavasya is kept for
Amavasya is the dark Moon, a quieter day turned towards the past. I leave it out for weddings, griha pravesh and openings, so it never shows up on my shubh muhurat 2027 list. That does not make it a bad day. It has its own uses.
- Pitru tarpan: offering water, sesame and a prayer for the departed, said by name. If ancestral themes run through a chart, I explain the rules on my pitra dosh page.
- Feeding: a meal for someone in need, or the family’s custom of feeding cows, crows or dogs.
- Rest: finishing work, not starting it. Many families keep the evening for a lamp and a short prayer.
- Shani and Somvati Amavasya: extra prayers to Shani on a Saturday Amavasya, and to Shiva on a Monday one.
The Ekadashi fasts sit between these two in every fortnight; the full 2027 list is on my Ekadashi 2027 page.
Simple home practices for both days
None of this needs a priest or money. It fits a flat as easily as a house.
- The evening before Purnima, clean the puja corner and the north-east of the home. Light a ghee lamp there at dusk. My page on the pooja room in a flat covers where that corner should be.
- The Moon’s side is the north-west. On Purnima, open the windows there and let the night air through if the weather allows.
- Before Amavasya, clear out what has piled up: old newspapers, broken items, clothes nobody wears.
- For tarpan, sit facing south, the direction tradition gives to the ancestors, and keep the place clean and quiet.
- On Amavasya evening, keep a lamp burning at the main entrance, a practice Diwali night makes familiar. The main door Vastu page explains why the door matters so much.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Purnima days are there in 2027?
Twelve. The first is Pausha Purnima on 22 January and the last is Margashirsha Purnima on 13 December. There are thirteen Amavasyas in the same year, because the first one falls on 7 January, before the first full Moon.
When is the first Amavasya of 2027?
Margashirsha Amavasya, on Thursday 7 January 2027 by the New Delhi sunrise. The tithi runs from 11:14 pm IST on 6 January to 1:54 am IST on 8 January.
Why do panchangs show different dates for Magha Purnima 2027?
At New Delhi the tithi begins at 8:00 am on 20 February and ends at 4:53 am on 21 February, so it is not present at either sunrise. Panchangs settle such a tithi in different ways. Most observe it on 20 February, but check your local panchang.
Which Amavasya dates in 2027 fall on a Monday?
8 March, 2 August and 27 December, all counted by sunrise at New Delhi. Families who keep the Somvati Amavasya vrat follow these three.
Can I buy property or sign a deal on Amavasya?
Nothing stops you, but I do not pick Amavasya for a registration, a griha pravesh or a business opening, and most families avoid it for new starts. If the date is forced on you, I would rather look at the hour and your chart than ask you to cancel.
