* Kamika Ekadashi does not touch any sunrise at New Delhi. It starts after sunrise on 29 July and is over before sunrise on 30 July. Panchangs differ on a tithi like this. Most observe it on Thursday 29 July, the day it begins, but check your local panchang before you plan the fast.
The month names are amanta. A North Indian purnimanta calendar gives every Krishna paksha Ekadashi the next month’s name, so Saphala can appear under Pausha there. The fast and the date stay the same.
How the fasting day is fixed
The Ekadashi that is present at sunrise is the one you fast on. That is the whole rule for most homes, and it is why a tithi that starts in the afternoon is kept the next day. Because sunrise comes earlier in Kolkata than in Mumbai, a tithi that begins close to dawn can land on different days in different cities.
Two calendars can still disagree by a day. Smarta households, which is most families, follow the sunrise rule as it stands. Vaishnava calendars, including ISKCON’s, add a stricter test: if Dashami is still running in the hour and a half or so before sunrise, they move the fast to the next day. When a temple date and your family panchang disagree, follow the tradition your family keeps.
Parana: breaking the fast
The fast is broken on Dwadashi, the next morning, after sunrise. Most panchangs print a parana window for each Ekadashi, and that is the safest guide. Two general points apply everywhere:
- Break the fast while Dwadashi is still running. When Dwadashi ends early in the morning, break it soon after sunrise.
- Keep the first meal light and sattvik. Many start with a tulsi leaf and water, then rice, which was left out the day before.
A fast is a discipline, not a test of the body. Children, elders, pregnant women and anyone on medicine can take fruit and milk, or skip it, and should follow their doctor first.
The Ekadashis people ask me about most
- Nirjala, 14 June: the waterless fast, and the hardest of the year. It falls in peak summer, so if water is a health issue for you, take it.
- Devshayani, 14 July: Chaturmas begins. Weddings and house-warmings pause from here, which is why my marriage muhurat 2027 and griha pravesh muhurat 2027 pages leave these months empty.
- Devutthana, 10 November: Chaturmas ends and the season opens again, with Tulsi Vivah to follow. For this year’s date, read my page on Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026.
- Pausha Putrada and Shravana Putrada: kept by couples who are praying for a child.
- Mokshada, 9 December: also Gita Jayanti in many homes.
For other work during the year, the open windows are on my shubh muhurat 2027 page. If you want the full Moon and new Moon days too, see Purnima and Amavasya 2027. The three spells when Mercury turns retrograde this year are on my Mercury retrograde 2027 page.
Keeping Ekadashi at home
A good Ekadashi at home is mostly about keeping the day simple. A few habits help.
- Do the puja in the north-east, or wherever your puja shelf sits, facing east if you can.
- Pick tulsi leaves on Dashami, the day before. By custom, tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi. My page on Vastu plants for home says where the plant should stand.
- Cook the fasting food fresh and keep the kitchen clean the night before, so the morning is not a rush. The kitchen Vastu page covers the stove and the south-east.
- Keep screens and arguments down for the day. That part matters more than any rule about grains.
Ekadashi, your Moon and your plans
Ekadashi is a Moon day, and the Moon is the mind. When a client tells me fasting leaves them restless or low, I look at the Moon in their chart before anything else, and sometimes a lighter fast suits them better. It works the other way too: people running a Jupiter or Moon dasha often find these days steady them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Ekadashis are there in 2027?
Twenty-five. Saphala Ekadashi falls twice, on 3 January and on 23 December, so the year holds one more than the usual 24. In a year with an extra month there can be 26, but 2027 is not one of them.
When is Nirjala Ekadashi in 2027?
On Monday 14 June 2027. The tithi starts at 2:12 am IST on 14 June and ends at 2:08 am IST on 15 June, so 14 June is the fasting day across India, with parana on the morning of 15 June.
Why is Kamika Ekadashi 2027 shown on different dates?
At New Delhi the tithi begins at 7:34 am on 29 July and ends at 5:13 am on 30 July, so it is not present at either sunrise. Panchangs handle such a tithi differently. Most keep the fast on 29 July, but check your local panchang.
When does Chaturmas begin and end in 2027?
It begins with Devshayani Ekadashi on 14 July 2027 and ends with Devutthana Ekadashi on 10 November 2027. Most families hold weddings and griha pravesh outside this stretch.
What time should I break the Ekadashi fast?
On the next morning, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends. Your panchang prints a parana window for each date, and it changes by city. If you follow a Vaishnava calendar, use its window, since it can differ from the Smarta one.
