A city that already thinks in Vastu
Jaipur people often know more Vastu than they let on. The old walled city was laid out on a grid of blocks, and its planning is widely linked with the traditional building texts. So when a Jaipur family sends me a plan, they have usually heard a rule or two from an elder already. My job is to sort the rules that matter for their house from the ones that do not.
Havelis and old houses
Older homes inside the walled city and in areas around it are often built around a chowk, an open courtyard in the middle. In Vastu terms that open centre is a gift, because the Brahmasthan should stay open and uncluttered. The trouble starts when families roof it over or turn it into a store. I look at what the centre is used for now and what can be given back to it.
JDA plots and newer colonies
Most new houses are on JDA or society plots in places like Mansarovar, Vaishali Nagar, Jagatpura, Malviya Nagar and along Ajmer Road and Tonk Road. These are mostly regular rectangles, but outer colonies throw up odd shapes: a plot narrowing towards the back, or one with a cut corner where two roads meet. Desert sun and Vastu
Jaipur’s summer sun is strong from late morning, and the south and west walls of a house take the worst of it. Traditional Rajasthani houses answered with thick walls, small openings and jaalis on those sides. That is close to what Vastu asks for: weight and closure in the south and west, light and openness to the north and east. When I suggest moving a wardrobe, a store or the staircase load to the south-west, it helps the zone and keeps the living rooms cooler. Dust storms are another reason to keep the north-east clean and easy to reach, so it does not become the dumping corner.

Frequently asked questions
Is a south-facing JDA plot bad?
No. A south-facing plot can be built well if the main gate and door are placed in the right part of the south side and the south-west is kept heavy. Plenty of families live happily in south-facing homes. We check your plot and its road before you decide.
We covered the chowk in our old house. Should we open it again?
Not always. Opening it may not be practical. What matters most is that the centre stays light, uncluttered and clear of heavy furniture. We look at what can be done with the space as it is.
Can you check a plot in a new colony on the outskirts before we pay?
Yes. Send the layout plan with your plot marked, the road widths and a few photos. The online plot check is ₹1,499, with a written report in 48 hours.
Where should the underground water tank go?
Vastu prefers underground water in the north or north-east. If your tank is already built somewhere else, there are ways to handle it without breaking it.
Can the session be in Hindi?
Yes, Hindi works well. I also take sessions in English and Bengali. I do not speak Rajasthani or Marwari, but most families are comfortable in Hindi.
